About NewsBreak: Local News & Alerts

NewsBreak is free, and ads pay for it: they interrupt articles, and several 2026 Play reviews report stories on the lock screen even with notifications off. In return it builds a feed around ZIP codes you choose from more than 10,000 sources, plus a Crime Map with gas-price and free-food layers. The main limitation is trust: Reuters counted at least 40 AI-related problems between 2021 and 2024.

NewsBreak Review: Deep Local Coverage, Buried Under Ads and AI Doubts

Free tier: ads, lock-screen stories and a $5.99 add-on

The help center calls the app free to use; the paywalls readers hit belong to partner publishers that charge for full articles. Of the 62 one-to-three-star English Play reviews posted from September 18 to October 1, 2026, 18 complained about ads, naming full-screen Temu and Candy Crush units and tiny close buttons. Several describe stories appearing on a locked phone after notifications were switched off; the developer's replies call these glitches and point to Me > Settings > Send feedback. The only paid add-on, Advanced Premium Experience, is listed in the US App Store at $5.99 or $71.99 a year, with no published list of what it adds. Prices are regional and may change.

Crime Map: risk markers, a 14-day window and gas prices

In the developer's screenshots, the Crime Map is a tab beside For You, Local and Local TV. You search an address or ZIP code, filter by risk level and pick a time window such as 14 days; incidents appear as colored dots and category icons. The same map switches to Free Food and Gas Station layers, where station pins carry posted prices and a shaded overlay grades areas from Safe to High Risk. The feed follows the same geography: add a ZIP code or city under Location at the top of For You and mark one as the default city. One Play reviewer who kept the app for its crime reports quit over lock-screen ads in April 2026; another asked for the map as a separate app.

Where stories come from: licensed feeds, the Creator Program and AI

Most of the feed is aggregated. A June 2024 Reuters investigation listed Reuters, AP, Fox and CNN among licensed partners, and partner articles open as embedded copies inside the app. Whether that infringes copyright is before the Fifth Circuit in Emmerich Newspapers v. Particle Media, after a 2025 district ruling that the company was not liable for embedded articles. Original posts come from the Creator Program, whose 2025 page waives platform fees for six months and lets writers set their own subscription prices. Reuters also counted at least 40 cases since 2021 where AI tools led to false stories, fictitious bylines or copied content, including a Christmas shooting in Bridgeton, New Jersey, that police called entirely false. The community standards now make publishers and creators responsible for fact-checking.

Location, ad partners and who owns Particle Media

Google Play's Data safety form says approximate location, email and device IDs may be shared with other companies for advertising, and the app collects your installed-apps list for personalization. Apple's label lists location, contact info and identifiers as used to track you. The privacy policy, updated July 31, 2026, concedes that ad-partner disclosures may count as a sale under California law and puts the opt-out under About in the app; AI features send prompts and your city or ZIP code to providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini. Owner Particle Media was founded in 2015 by Jeff Zheng and is backed by Francisco Partners. Reuters reported it began as a U.S. arm of Chinese aggregator Yidian, which divested in 2019; the company calls itself U.S.-based and U.S.-invested.

Pros

  • Feed follows ZIP codes you add, with one set as the default city
  • Crime Map filters incidents by risk level and a 14-day window
  • Map layers show posted gas prices and free-food sites nearby
  • Block Source and Show less about trim outlets and topics from For You
  • Draws on more than 10,000 sources, including licensed Reuters and AP stories

Cons

  • 18 of 62 critical Play reviews from late September 2026 cite intrusive ads
  • Reviewers report lock-screen stories even after turning notifications off
  • Reuters documented at least 40 AI-related problems, including an invented New Jersey shooting
  • Approximate location, email and device IDs may be shared with advertising partners

Verdict

We scored it 5.2. The ZIP-code feed, 10,000-plus sources and a Crime Map with gas-price and free-food layers carry the core score; heavy ads, lock-screen stories reported through 2026, a Premium plan with no published benefits and ad-related data sharing pull it down. Take it if hyperlocal crime, traffic and town news matter more than a calm screen. Skip it for ad-free reading or source transparency, where Ground News fits better.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is NewsBreak free?

Yes. The help center says the app is free to use, and ads pay for it. The US App Store also lists an optional Advanced Premium Experience at $5.99 or $71.99 a year, though the company does not describe what it adds. Some partner articles still require the publisher's own subscription. Prices are regional and may change.

2

How does the NewsBreak crime map work?

It plots local incidents as colored markers on a map you search by address or ZIP code. The developer's screenshots show risk-level and time-window filters, such as 14 days, plus Gas Station and Free Food layers with fuel prices on station pins.

3

Is NewsBreak Premium worth it?

Hard to judge, because the company does not publish what the Advanced Premium Experience includes. The US App Store lists it at $5.99 or $71.99 a year, and the terms of use make fees nonrefundable after you cancel, with access lasting to the end of the paid period. Prices are regional and may change.

4

How do I delete my NewsBreak account?

Open Me, then Edit Profile, tap the three-dot icon in the upper right corner and choose Delete Account. A subscription bought through Google Play or the App Store is cancelled separately in that store, as the terms of use require.

5

What is a good NewsBreak alternative with fewer ads?

Ground News is the clearest swap: its developer says subscriptions are its only revenue, and it rates sources for bias, reliability and ownership, with yearly plans from $9.99 in the US App Store. SmartNews keeps a local section and lists an Ads-free SmartNews purchase at $3.99 or $4.99 in the US App Store, though its help center denies an ad-free plan. Google News lets you follow several locations. Prices are regional and may change.
