About Firefox

Firefox is Mozilla's browser for phones: private browsing that keeps bookmarks but discards history and cookies, tab groups, wallpapers for the start page, and sync that carries open tabs between a phone and a desktop. It costs nothing, shows no advertising and contains no in-app purchases, and Google Play records no third-party data sharing — a combination almost nothing else in this catalogue manages.

Firefox Review: No Ads, No Purchases, No Data Sharing

Total Cookie Protection Runs by Default

Mozilla's headline privacy feature isolates cookies per site, so a tracker loaded on one page cannot read what it stored on another, and it has shipped switched on for everyone rather than as an option to find in settings. Private browsing goes further in the other direction: the app keeps no history or cookies from those tabs while still saving any bookmark you make, which is the sensible compromise most browsers get wrong. Neither is sold as an upgrade — there is no premium tier in this app at all.

Tabs, Groups and Sync Across Devices

The tab screen is a grid with three modes — normal, private and synced — so a page left open on a laptop is two taps away on the phone. Sync carries tabs, bookmarks, history and passwords through a Mozilla account, and the start page can be themed with wallpapers, including collections Mozilla ships as limited editions. None of it requires an account until you want sync, which means the browser is fully usable with no sign-in at all, unlike the default browsers on either platform. Reading tools and a customisable toolbar sit in the same menu, so the browser adapts to how you read rather than to how it ships.

Five Data Categories, Nothing Shared

Google Play lists five collected categories, including location and personal information, and declares no sharing with third parties — the cleanest card of any browser here. There is no advertising badge and no in-app purchase entry either, so the app has no commercial mechanism inside it. The trade-off is performance and weight: this is a heavy install for a browser, and on some sites it renders slower than the platform default. Ratings sit at 4.6 on both stores, across 6.5 million Play reviews. Mozilla is a non-profit foundation's subsidiary rather than an advertising company, which is the structural reason this listing looks different from its rivals'.

  • Private tabs discard history and cookies but keep bookmarks
  • Sync carries open tabs between phone and desktop
  • Usable without creating an account at all

Cons

  • A heavy install for a browser
  • Slower than the platform default browser on some sites
  • Sync requires a Mozilla account to be useful
  • Five data categories collected, including location

Verdict

The rare app with no commercial layer at all: no ads, no purchases, no sharing declared, and privacy protections switched on rather than offered. Install it if the tracking defaults of the built-in browser bother you and you want tabs that follow you between devices. Skip it if raw speed is the priority — it is heavier than the platform default and noticeably slower on some sites.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is Firefox free?

Completely, and unusually so: no advertising, no in-app purchases and no subscription tier. Mozilla funds the browser mainly through search-engine deals rather than through anything inside the app, which is why the Play listing carries neither an ads badge nor a purchase entry.

2

What is Total Cookie Protection?

Cookie isolation: each website's cookies are confined to that site, so a tracker embedded across many pages cannot follow you between them. Mozilla shipped it enabled by default for all users rather than hiding it in settings, which is the difference between a privacy feature and a privacy claim.

3

Does anything in the browser cost money?

Nothing. Mozilla sells a VPN and other subscriptions elsewhere, and the browser advertises them occasionally, but nothing inside this app is paywalled. Sync, private browsing, wallpapers and tab groups are all part of the free download.

4

Can you use it without an account?

Yes, entirely. Browsing, private tabs, bookmarks and wallpapers work with no sign-in. An account only becomes necessary to sync tabs, bookmarks and passwords with another device, and it can be added later without losing anything already saved locally.

5

What are the alternatives?

Chrome is faster on most sites and integrates with Google's account, at the cost of a much longer data-collection card. Safari is the lighter choice on an iPhone. This one is chosen for the privacy defaults and for the sync that works across platforms rather than inside one company's ecosystem.
