Best Photo Editing Apps on Mobile, Ranked by Our Scores

BeautyPlus is a selfie camera and portrait editor from Pixocial, a Singapore subsidiary of Hong Kong-listed Meitu. It puts skin retouching, face reshaping, makeup, hair try-ons, object removal and AI portraits in one app, with a diamond icon on every paid tool. The free tier shows ads and caps video at 3 minutes. The main catch is Premium, listed from $11.99 a month in the US, whose free trial draws repeated billing complaints.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-10-01. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
The download costs nothing, and the help center says a free version will remain: any tool without a diamond icon is free. Since mid-2026, low-star Google Play reviews in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Indonesian describe formerly free features moving to Premium, and a September reviewer found the concealer and smoothing locks only at the save step. Free use also brings ads. Google Play shows the Contains ads label, the terms ask users to agree to receive them, and App Store reviewers describe ads that play before the camera opens; removing them is a Premium perk. Video recording stops at 3 minutes for everyone, and Premium extends it to 10 minutes on iPhone only. The watermark, by contrast, is a Settings toggle.
The Retouch tab holds Head, Dark circles, Firm, Resize, Acne and Contour; Makeup splits into Lipstick, Eyebrow, Eyeshadow, Contour and Blush, with lipstick shades coded RD03 or PK04; the hair panel adds Hair Dye, Hair Style, Hair Part and Hairline, the last two diamond-marked in store screenshots. September 2026 updates added Head Shaping, symmetry options and jawline controls, while July brought Auto-Mosaic, which detects faces and blurs them before sharing. HD Retouch is the one-tap route, and the help center sets three conditions for it: an active Premium plan, a stable internet connection and a photo showing a complete face. A help notice updated in February 2026 says avatars and some other features were temporarily removed over quality issues.
In the US App Store, Premium is listed at $11.99 a month, with two annual options, $39.99 and $59.99, both marked with a free trial. Google Play lists items from $0.10 to $99.99, and a July 2026 review with more than 8,000 helpful votes objects to paying $7 a week. Prices vary by region. More than 20 reviews from 2026, across both stores and three languages, say a trial ended in an annual charge, several of them immediately. The help center explains part of it: trials go only to people who never subscribed, returning users pay at once, and cancelling must happen at least 24 hours before the trial ends. AI credits are sold separately, are non-refundable and are forfeited on uninstall.
The help center says photos stay on your device, but the privacy policy, last modified in November 2024, says cloud editing features upload photos and their EXIF data, which can include GPS coordinates, to company servers. Its US section lets Pixocial use facial recognition to collect biometric information for identity checks, service improvement and internal research; where Illinois law applies, that data is deleted within three years of last use. Storage may be in Singapore, mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea or the US. Google Play's Data safety form lists only device IDs, shared for advertising, and crash logs. FaceApp, by contrast, says it deletes uploads 24 to 48 hours after the last edit. Meitu's 2023 filing calls Pixocial its overseas business, and in March 2026 Meitu redeemed all outside investors' preference shares in it.

BeautyPlus earns 6.3 for a deep set of named portrait tools held back by its subscription practices and a broad privacy policy. Take it if you retouch selfies often, want makeup, hair and object-removal tools in one app, and will track renewals in your store settings. Skip it if you have used its trial before, want an ad-free free tier, or prefer an editor that deletes uploads within days, as FaceApp says it does.

Yes to download, and any tool without a diamond icon is free, per the help center. The free tier shows ads and stops video recording at 3 minutes. Since mid-2026, reviewers report more retouch tools moving to Premium, sometimes revealed only at the save step.
It needs three things, per the help center: an active Premium subscription, a stable internet connection and a photo that shows a complete face. On iPhone, the device date and time should also be set automatically. The privacy policy says cloud editing features upload photos to company servers.
In the US App Store, Premium is $11.99 a month, and annual plans are listed at $39.99 and $59.99 with a free trial; prices vary by region. The trial goes only to people who never subscribed, and anyone else is charged at once. Cancel at least 24 hours before it ends, in your store settings.
Cancel in your store account: Subscriptions in iPhone Settings, or Payments & subscriptions in Google Play; Premium runs until the paid period ends. The terms call payments non-refundable, so refund requests go to Apple or Google. A plan bought on Android does not carry over to an iPhone.
Its cloud editing features do, per the privacy policy, which also allows facial-recognition data use for US users and storage in countries including China. FaceApp also edits on servers but says it deletes photos 24 to 48 hours after the last edit. Picsart suits broader design work, with Pro at $126 a year on its US site.
