Best Money Apps in the US: Banking and Payments, Ranked
Capital One Mobile is the best money app on our scores at 8.2, and it earns the place with one feature anyone can use: CreditWise, a free FICO Score 8
This is the bank's own app: balances and due dates on one screen, payments, instant card locking, and purchase alerts precise enough to flag the same charge billed twice. It also carries CreditWise, a free FICO Score 8 built on TransUnion data that anyone can use without banking here. Everything else needs an account, which makes it a customer tool rather than a finance app.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-09-07. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
The credit section is the part open to everyone: anyone over 18 with a Social Security number matching a TransUnion file can use it without holding an account with the bank. It shows a FICO Score 8 based on TransUnion data — 720, rated Good, in the app's own example — and the bank states plainly that a lender may use a different model. Alerts fire on changes to both the TransUnion and Experian reports, dark web monitoring watches for your email address and Social Security number, and a simulator estimates what a new card or a paid-off balance would do. Checking does not affect the score.
The lock dialog is direct about what it does: no one, including you, can use the card until it is switched back on, and it can be reversed at any time. Purchase notifications land on the lock screen with the merchant and amount — a charge of $10.50 billed twice by the same store, in the example the bank ships — which is how a duplicate gets caught the same day rather than on a statement. Sign-in is Face ID or Touch ID instead of a password. Eno, the assistant, issues a separate virtual card number per merchant that keeps working after a physical card is reissued, though not every card qualifies.
Google Play's card is unusually brief for a bank: device or other IDs are the only category listed as collected, with personal information and app activity shared onward, against 50 million installs and 4.5 stars from 1.71 million reviews. The App Store average is 4.8 across 11 million ratings, the largest positive sample of any app in this catalogue. The history is the counterweight. The 2019 breach reached roughly 100 million people in the United States and 6 million in Canada; the intrusion happened on 22 and 23 March and was not discovered until 19 July that year, four months later.

One of the better bank apps, and the details are why: the lock dialog says exactly what locking does, alerts arrive fast enough to catch a double charge, and virtual card numbers survive a reissued card. The credit score is genuinely free and genuinely FICO. Worth installing if you bank here — and worth the credit section even if you do not. The 2019 breach still belongs in the decision.

Yes, and its listing carries no advertising badge and no in-app purchases. Nothing inside costs money: card management, payments, Zelle transfers and credit monitoring are all included with an account, and the credit score section works even for people who bank elsewhere.
Numbers created per merchant so the real card number never reaches a website. Each can be locked on its own without touching your other spending, and they survive a card being reissued, so stored subscriptions keep working. Eligibility depends on the card, so check the benefits guide first.
No. CreditWise is free, open to anyone over 18 with a Social Security number matching a TransUnion credit file, and using it does not affect the score. It includes report alerts, dark web monitoring for your email and Social Security number, and a simulator.
Only for the credit tools. Balances, payments, card locking, virtual numbers and transfers all require an account with the bank. If the credit score is what you want, it works standalone — and it is one of the few free FICO scores rather than an educational alternative.
Chase and Bank of America ship comparable apps for their own customers, with card locking and alerts of the same kind. For credit monitoring alone, Credit Karma covers two bureaus but shows VantageScore rather than a FICO model, which is what most lenders actually pull.
