Best Car Apps for Buying and Fixing a Car, Ranked

Add ScoredApps as a preferred source on GoogleA car dashboard whose gauges are car apps, Car Scanner in the centre with a diagnostic adapter below — Best Car Apps for Buying and Fixing a Car, Ranked

Car Scanner ELM OBD2 is the best car app: with a small adapter in the diagnostic port it reads and clears fault codes, shows live sensor data and costs no more than $7.99 in the App Store. We ranked the auto apps in our catalogue, for keeping a car running and for buying the next one, on what each does for free and what the hardware or reports cost. Cars.com is the shopping pick, because its badges show whether a price is good. Prices are as of October 2026.

How we picked

Car apps do two jobs that rarely meet in one install: finding and pricing the next car, and keeping the current one running. We ranked the auto apps in our catalogue on what each does without paying, what the paid parts or required hardware cost, and how much of your data reaches dealers and advertisers. Prices are US figures as of October 2026 and come from each company's pages and store listings.

Scan tools need a small adapter plugged into the car's diagnostic port under the dashboard; the app alone reads nothing.

1. Car Scanner ELM OBD2 — a mechanic's code reader on your phone

Car Scanner ELM OBD2 wins because it turns an ELM327 adapter into a scan tool that rivals charge far more for. It reads and clears fault codes, shows freeze frame data and Mode 06 test results, tracks live sensors with custom PIDs, and adds coding for Volkswagen-group cars. When the check-engine light comes on, it tells you whether the problem is a loose fuel cap or a misfire before you pay a garage to look.

The download is free with ads; Car Scanner Pro unlocks full access for $3.99 for six months, $4.99 a year or $7.99 forever in the US App Store, and the developer says every tier unlocks the same features. Google Play Pass subscribers get the Android build without ads or purchases. The catch is hardware: iPhones work only with Bluetooth LE, Wi-Fi or MFi adapters, the developer recommends models such as the OBDLink MX+, at around $100, and warns that clones under $10 drop data and can even make an engine run rough, ABS and airbag access depends on the car, and a licence bought on iPhone does not carry over to Android. Our score: 7.7.

2. AutoZone — parts, stock and rewards

AutoZone adds your car by scanning its VIN, tags parts that fit it, and shows which nearby store has one in stock; you can then pick it up, ship it or, in select markets, get it delivered the same day. AutoZone Rewards pay $20 after five purchases of $20 or more, and receipts and warranties stay in the app.

Search is the weak spot: 2026 reviewers describe results unrelated to the query or the selected car, and forced updates. Our score: 7.3.

3. RepairSolutions2 — a likely fix, not just a code

RepairSolutions2 is Innova's free diagnostic app, and paired with an Innova or BLCKTEC scan tool it turns a fault code into a report with a likely fix, an OEM part number and ASE-verified repair notes. Without a tool it still shows recalls, service bulletins and maintenance schedules for a typed-in VIN.

Generic ELM327 adapters will not connect, it works only in the US and Canada, and it needs an account and a steady connection. MOTOR wiring data costs from $14.99. Our score: 7.2.

4. Cars.com — is this a good price?

Cars.com is the best of the shopping apps at answering that question. Listings carry Great Deal, Good Deal or Fair Price badges built from comparable cars, a Hot Car flag marks used cars the model gives a 70% chance of selling within seven days, and on iPhone Lot Assistant pulls pricing and history from a photo you take at a dealership.

It is free for shoppers and private sellers because dealers pay, with sponsored listings mixed into results. Saved searches send price-drop alerts, and every dealer contact form passes your details on. Our score: 7.1.

5. Carfax — a free history report on every used listing

Carfax attaches a free Vehicle History Report to every used car it lists, with the accident and owner record, plus a History-Based Value estimate and, when the dealer supplies them, fees and price history.

Checking a car you found elsewhere is not free: a report costs $49.99 through the iPhone app, and the Android version sells none. Filters are clumsy and sign-in bugs recur. Our score: 7.0.

6. CarMax — buy or sell through one retailer

CarMax connects an inventory of more than 40,000 cars to over 250 stores, with free reservations, soft-pull pre-qualification that does not touch your credit score, and Instant Offers on your own car valid for seven days. It shows no ads and sells nothing in the app.

7. Autotrader — Kelley Blue Book inside every listing

Autotrader claims more than 6 million vehicles from over 20,000 sellers, and its listings carry Kelley Blue Book data, from Price Advisor ranges to the My Wallet payment estimator. An AI assistant and itemised price details arrived in 2026.

It is ad-supported and shares location for advertising, and 2026 reviews describe bots and scammers flooding private sellers' inboxes. Buy here; think twice before selling your own car here. Our score: 6.8.

Fuel rewards and carmaker apps

Shell now carries Fuel Rewards, which pay 3, 5 or 10 cents a gallon depending on fill-ups per quarter, plus EV charging; its Android rating is 2.9 against 4.8 on iPhone. Carmaker apps such as myAudi and Toyota handle remote locking, climate and service booking for their own cars. Audi includes its connected services free for 10 years on new cars, while Toyota sells remote start in a $15 monthly bundle once the one-year trial ends.

Bottom line

If you own a car, buy a quality adapter and install Car Scanner: reading your own fault codes is the cheapest repair insight there is, and it tells you what to ask the garage. If you are shopping, use Cars.com for the price badges and check each used car's history on Carfax before you call the dealer.
