About Move to iOS

Move to iOS is Apple's Android app for copying contacts, messages, photos, WhatsApp chats and call history to a new iPhone or iPad, and it only works inside the iPhone's setup screens: once setup is finished, the iPhone has to be erased before you can use it. Data travels over a temporary Wi-Fi network or a USB-C cable rather than the cloud. Music, books, PDFs, paid apps and saved passwords stay behind.

Move to iOS Review: It Moves WhatsApp and Call Logs, but Only During Setup

Only on the Transfer Your Apps & Data screen, or after an erase

The app pairs only with an iPhone or iPad that is still in setup: after Quick Start you tap Set Up Without Another Apple Device, then From Android and Transfer with App on the Transfer Your Apps & Data screen. If setup is already done, Apple's answer is an erase or a manual move. Pairing uses a six- or ten-digit code shown on the iPhone, which then creates a temporary Wi-Fi network for the Android phone to join; a USB-C cable is the faster option. The Android side needs version 6.0 or later. Also, everything you select, including a microSD card, must fit in the iPhone's storage, and Chrome bookmarks only come across after Chrome is updated.

WhatsApp, call history and 14 data types: what crosses over

Apple's support page lists 14 categories: contacts, message history, SMS, camera photos and videos, photo albums, files and folders, accessibility settings, display settings, web bookmarks, mail accounts, WhatsApp messages and media, Voice Memos, call history and calendars. Recent updates added call history, Dual SIM labels, and voice recordings that land in Voice Memos or Files depending on their format. Only free apps sold in both stores, and only those that support the feature, get matched, and you download them from the App Store once setup ends. Purchased apps and media stored inside apps are not copied. Music, books and PDFs need a computer sync or a sign-in to a streaming app. Apple's license adds that saved passwords never transfer, while Google and Gmail usernames do, to prefill accounts.

Stalls at 99%, and why a failed run means erasing the iPhone

Apple says the Android app must stay onscreen the whole time: switching apps or taking a phone call before it ends means your content won't transfer, and the iPhone's progress bar, not the Android screen, decides when it is done. If a run dies partway or fills the iPhone, Apple's fix is to erase the iPhone and start again. Google Play reviews show how often that happens. Of 130 English one- and two-star reviews from 2026, 28 describe a transfer that froze or stalled, 13 of them at 98 to 99% or on a one-minute estimate, and 15 say a failed attempt meant starting over, usually after a reset. Apple suggests switching off Smart Network Switch, forgetting saved Wi-Fi networks and turning off mobile data.

Location is the only required permission

The permission list is long: SMS, call log, contacts, calendar, precise location, web bookmarks and the accounts on the device. Apple's Play listing marks only Location as required, because Android needs it to set up the Wi-Fi link with the iPhone; the rest are optional, each tied to one data type, such as SMS for text messages. Apple's license says the app moves content directly between the two devices, sends only app metadata to Apple to suggest iOS versions of your apps, and passes nothing to third parties. The Data safety form lists optional crash logs and diagnostics, and setup asks whether to send them. There is no backup step, unlike Samsung Smart Switch, which can keep a copy on a PC, Mac, microSD card or USB drive while moving a phone onto a Galaxy device. Google's Android Switch covers the opposite trip, from iPhone to Android.

Pros

  • Moves 14 data types, including WhatsApp chats, call history and Voice Memos
  • Free on Google Play, with no ads and no in-app purchases
  • Needs no internet: a temporary Wi-Fi network or USB-C cable links the phones
  • Location is the only required permission; the others are optional
  • Some free apps found in both stores are matched for App Store download
  • Apple's license says only app metadata, not your content, reaches Apple

Cons

  • Works only during iPhone setup; afterwards the iPhone must be erased first
  • Music, books, PDFs, paid apps and saved passwords do not transfer
  • A partial or interrupted transfer means erasing the iPhone and starting again
  • 2026 Play reviews often describe stalls near 99%, many involving WhatsApp

Verdict

We score Move to iOS 7.3. It earns points for moving 14 data types, WhatsApp included, for free and without the cloud, with Location as the only required permission. It loses them for working only during setup, leaving music, PDFs, paid apps and passwords behind, and for stalled transfers that end in an erased iPhone. Use it on a new or freshly reset iPhone. Skip it if your iPhone is already set up and you need only mail, contacts and calendars: adding your Google account brings those over.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you use Move to iOS after setting up an iPhone?

No. The app only connects to an iPhone or iPad that is still in setup, through the From Android option on the Transfer Your Apps & Data screen. If setup is already finished, Apple's options are to erase the iPhone and start again, or to move content manually, starting with adding your Google account in Settings.

2

Does Move to iOS transfer WhatsApp chats?

Yes. WhatsApp messages and media are on Apple's list of transferable data, alongside contacts, SMS, photos, call history and Voice Memos. It is also a step reviewers often say stalls: 20 of 130 English one- and two-star Play reviews from 2026 mention WhatsApp. Apple's advice is to keep both phones on power with the Android app onscreen until the iPhone's bar finishes.

3

Is Move to iOS free, and do paid apps transfer?

The app is free on Google Play, with no ads or in-app purchases. Paid apps do not come across: only free apps listed in both stores that support the feature are matched, and you download them from the App Store after setup. Purchased apps and media saved inside apps are not copied, so check the App Store listing of any paid app you rely on.

4

Does Move to iOS need an internet connection?

No. The iPhone creates a temporary Wi-Fi network that the Android phone joins after you enter the code, and a USB-C cable works as a faster direct link. Apple says a weak-internet warning on Android can be ignored. Activating your phone number or eSIM may still send you to the carrier's website to finish.

5

Can I switch from Android to iPhone without Move to iOS?

Yes, in two ways. Phones on a compatible build of Android 17 can use Transfer without App: you scan the iPhone's QR code with the Android camera, or pair through Google Services and Pair with iPhone or iPad, and an eSIM can move too. Otherwise, Apple's manual route is adding your Google account for mail, contacts and calendars and syncing photos and music through a computer.
