Best Free Utility Apps on Mobile, Ranked
Google Translate is the best free utility app: it translates text, speech and camera images, works offline once you download a language, and has no ad
Smart Switch copies an iPhone's contacts, photos, messages and notes to a Galaxy phone, but how much arrives depends on the route: a USB-C cable carries 14 kinds of data, while the iPhone app's Wi-Fi mode on One UI 8.5 and older sends only four. It also imports from iCloud or from any Android 6.0+ phone, and costs nothing, with no ads. The limit to know first: it only delivers to Galaxy devices.

On a Galaxy running One UI 8.5 or older, the connection decides what arrives. The iPhone app sends over Wi-Fi only contacts with their photos, photos and videos, calendar events without attachments, and reminders without repeat rules. Samsung lists 14 categories for a USB-C cable, adding iMessage and SMS/MMS threads (message effects are dropped), notes, files, voice memos, Safari bookmarks, alarms, DRM-free music, the block list, Bluetooth settings and the home screen with installed apps and folders. By cable the iPhone needs no app: you tap Trust and enter the passcode, and a Lightning iPhone needs a USB-C to Lightning cable or adapter. A third route, Get data from iCloud, signs into your Apple account on the Galaxy and fetches contacts, photos, calendars, reminders, files and notes, minus fonts and tables.
A Samsung support note updated in September 2026 describes a newer route. If the iPhone runs iOS 26.6 or later and the Galaxy runs Android 17 with One UI 9.0, you scan the QR code on the Galaxy's setup screen with the iPhone's own Camera app, enter the passcode, and the transfer runs wirelessly with nothing installed on the iPhone. This path carries much more over Wi-Fi: SMS, MMS and iMessage threads, call logs, Pages, Keynote and Numbers files, home layout, saved Wi-Fi networks, and passwords and passkeys. Google's Android help lists the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Z Flip8, plus Pixel 8 and newer, as devices for this upgraded process. WhatsApp chats, reminders, Bluetooth pairings, blocked contacts and browser bookmarks still come over in a second, cable-only step offered on a tip card after the wireless phase.
Samsung's FAQ states that Smart Switch receives only on Galaxy phones and tablets and does not work in the other direction, so leaving a Galaxy for a Pixel or an iPhone means Google's or Apple's tools. Game progress is not copied even when the game is reinstalled, DRM-protected music and video stay behind, and app data moves only between two Galaxy devices. If a wireless transfer fails midway, Samsung says it stops and has to restart from the beginning; the most-upvoted 2026 one-star Play review we read, with 126 helpful votes, describes a cable transfer dropping near 35% and starting over each time. Apple's label says the iPhone app collects no data, while the Android Data safety form lists installed apps and device IDs for analytics, sent unencrypted. On Galaxy phones the app is built in, and Samsung's replies to reviewers point to Uninstall updates, not removal.

We score Smart Switch 7.4. It is free, needs no iPhone app for cable, iCloud or One UI 9 transfers, and by cable moves 14 kinds of iPhone data, from iMessage threads to the home screen. Points come off for an iPhone app that sends only four data types over Wi-Fi on older One UI, transfers that restart from zero after a drop, and unencrypted Android analytics. Take it if your new phone is a Galaxy and you have a cable. Skip it if you are moving to a Pixel or an iPhone.

No. A USB-C cable moves the most, 14 categories including iMessage and SMS threads, notes, voice memos and the home screen layout. The iPhone app's wireless mode on One UI 8.5 or older sends only contacts, photos and videos, calendar events and reminders. Game progress, DRM-protected music and video, and iMessage effects never transfer by any route.
Yes, but only over a cable and before WhatsApp is activated on the Galaxy; if you sign in there first, Samsung says to uninstall WhatsApp on the Galaxy and start again. You need the same phone number, a SIM that can receive the verification SMS, and a Lightning to USB-C cable or adapter. One number gets three verification texts in a short period, then waits about 8 hours.
Yes. Smart Switch is free on Google Play and the App Store, neither listing shows ads or in-app purchases, and it comes preinstalled on Galaxy phones. The only likely expense is a USB-C to Lightning cable or adapter for an older iPhone. Separate Smart Switch apps for Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.9 or later back up a phone to a computer.
No. Samsung says the data stays on both phones after a transfer, and contacts with the same name and number are merged on the Galaxy. Before retiring an iPhone, turn off iMessage, or texts from iPhone users may not arrive; Smart Switch reminds you and provides a deregistration link. On Galaxy phones the app is built in and can only be rolled back with Uninstall updates.
No. Smart Switch only receives on Galaxy phones and tablets. For Android to iPhone, Apple's Move to iOS app copies contacts, message history, photos, WhatsApp chats and call history. For iPhone to a Pixel, Google's Android Switch app sends photos, videos, contacts and calendar events wirelessly, and a cable during setup adds messages, apps and music.
