About AccuWeather: Weather Forecast

AccuWeather is free but ad-supported, and new users can remove the ads only with Premium+, at $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year in the US App Store. Its edge is MinuteCast, a street-level rain and snow forecast for the next four hours, plus a free login that stretches forecasts to 45 days. The catch: full-page ads, and location data that may be shared for advertising.

AccuWeather Review: Precise Rain Timing, Pushy Ads and a Pricier Way Out

Free tier: 30 days logged out, 45 days with a free login

Without an account, the app shows 30 days of daily forecasts and 72 hours of hourly data. A free login with Google, Apple or email makes you a Plus member and raises that to 45 days and 120 hours, with more saved places. The paywall shows in hourly graphs: Temperature and Air Quality stay open, while Rain, Humidity and UV Index need Premium+ or a short ad through Watch for Rewards, which unlocks one graph for a limited time. The support FAQ openly addresses full-page ads, and free users cannot move the MinuteCast card pinned to the top of the Today screen.

MinuteCast: a 60-minute dial with a four-hour forecast behind it

MinuteCast forecasts precipitation type, intensity and start and end times for the next four hours at a resolution of about 0.5 square miles (1.3 sq km), fine enough to pin to a street address. The dial reads like a clock face: the current minute sits at the top and the ring runs clockwise through the next 60 minutes, color-coded by type and intensity, and tapping the center opens all four hours. Settings > Today swaps the dial for a chart. Coverage is listed as 210 countries and territories, yet the FAQ admits some locations get no MinuteCast at all. US locations also get lightning alerts for strikes within 15 miles.

Premium+ at $4.99 a month, and what happened to the old ad-free plans

Premium+ is the only paid tier on sale: $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year in the US App Store, up from $1.99 and $19.99 at its May 2022 launch, with a free trial on the yearly plan for eligible accounts. It removes ads and adds AccuWeather Alerts from staff meteorologists graded Potential, Threat or Imminent, for the contiguous US only, plus 90-day daily forecasts, a 10-day HourCast, every hourly graph and 12 saved places. The ad-only Premium and one-time Platinum still work for past buyers but are no longer sold. WeatherBug still sells ad removal alone at $10.99 a year; The Weather Channel's Premium also costs $4.99 a month and adds 72-hour future radar. Check the current price in the app; it varies by region.

Location: optional, but Apple's label lists tracking

Location is optional: search places by hand or set a fixed Default Location. Android widgets and the status-bar temperature need "Allow all the time" to follow you, and the iOS listing warns it may use location while closed. Apple's privacy label lists location and usage data as used to track you across other companies' apps. The privacy policy, revised October 31, 2025, says precise location from the apps is sold or shared with analytics and ad providers only with consent, switchable under Settings > Privacy Settings. In 2017, researcher Will Strafach found the iOS app sending Wi-Fi router details to Reveal Mobile even with location off; the company pulled that SDK, TechCrunch reported.

Pros

  • MinuteCast times when rain or snow starts and stops, four hours ahead
  • A free login stretches forecasts to 45 days and 120 hours
  • US lightning alerts trigger for strikes within 15 miles
  • Location is optional: manual search and a fixed Default Location work
  • Android status bar shows the current temperature on the free tier
  • RealFeel Shade separates the felt temperature in shade from direct sun

Cons

  • Full-page ads interrupt the free app, and the ad-only plan is no longer sold
  • Premium+ costs $29.99 a year, up from $19.99 at its 2022 launch
  • 26 of the 150 newest English Play reviews reported broken radar in September 2026
  • Apple's privacy label lists location and usage data as used to track you

Verdict

We scored it 6.2. MinuteCast's four-hour, street-level rain timing and free 45-day forecasts carry the score; full-page ads, a $29.99 yearly Premium+ as the only ad-free route, September 2026 radar breakage and location shared for advertising pull it down. Take it if you want minute-level rain timing or US lightning alerts and can tolerate ads. Skip it for cheap ad-free weather, where WeatherBug's $10.99 year costs less, or if sharing location with ad partners is a deal-breaker.

Core function8.0MinuteCast times rain to the minute for four hours, and a free login stretches forecasts to 45 days.
Ease of use6.5Full-page ads interrupt screens, and free users cannot move the pinned MinuteCast card or open most graphs.
Monetisation4.5Removing ads now takes $29.99-a-year Premium+; the cheaper ad-only plan and lifetime Platinum are discontinued.
Performance5.526 of the 150 newest English Play reviews reported broken radar after September 2026 updates; the developer says it's fixed.
Privacy & permissions5.0Location is optional, but Apple's label lists tracking, and precise location can go to ad providers with consent.

Frequently asked questions

1

How do I get rid of ads on AccuWeather?

Subscribe to Premium+, the only ad-free plan sold to new users: $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year in the US App Store. A free login extends forecasts to 45 days but does not remove ads, and the old ad-only plans can no longer be bought. Check the current price in the app; it varies by region.

2

How far ahead does AccuWeather MinuteCast forecast rain?

Four hours. The dial on the Today screen covers the next 60 minutes like a clock face, and tapping its center opens the minute-by-minute view for all four hours, with precipitation type, intensity and start and end times at roughly 0.5-square-mile resolution. It is free, but some locations get no MinuteCast data.

3

Is AccuWeather Premium+ worth it?

It pays off mainly in the contiguous US, where AccuWeather Alerts from staff meteorologists work, or if you want an ad-free app. The $4.99 monthly or $29.99 yearly plan also adds 90-day forecasts, a 10-day HourCast, all hourly graphs and 12 saved places. Check the current price in the app; it varies by region.

4

What happens if I cancel AccuWeather Premium+?

The app falls back to the free, ad-supported version, and Premium+ alerts, graphs and extended forecasts lock again. Staying logged in to a free account keeps 45-day and 120-hour forecasts. Cancel through Google Play or App Store subscriptions; deleting your account is a separate request under Settings > Privacy Settings > Requests, typically answered in 30 to 45 days.

5

Does AccuWeather sell your location data?

Not for money, the company says, but its privacy policy, revised October 31, 2025, states that precise location from the mobile apps may be sold or shared with analytics and advertising providers with your consent. You can turn on Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information under Settings > Privacy Settings, or deny location and search places manually.
