About Weather & Radar

Weather & Radar is a free forecast app from WetterOnline, a weather service in Bonn, Germany, built around one radar map that layers rain, cloud, fog, lightning and temperature up to four days ahead. A 15-minute lightning history, a 90-minute outlook and Android Auto support set it apart. The catch is advertising: banners, full-screen pop-ups and some scam-style ads, unless you pay for the ad-free subscription.

Weather & Radar Review: A Sharp Four-Day Radar, Weighed Down by Its Ads

Free 4-day WeatherRadar, paid for by banners and full-screen ads

The free tier already includes the four-day WeatherRadar loop, the 14-day trend chart, the 90-minute outlook in 15-minute steps and severe weather alerts, which the developer says arrive up to 36 hours ahead, or 48 for hurricanes. Ads are sold through Google Ad Manager auctions. A July 2026 Play review describes a banner filling a third of the home screen, and others report full-screen ads when switching between the radar and other views. Worse, 11 of the 279 English Play reviews we read, posted from April to September 2026, describe scam-style ads, such as fake warnings that the app is outdated or the phone infected. In September replies, the developer said misleading ads sometimes slip through and asked for screenshots to block them.

WeatherRadar layers, LightningRadar and a 15-minute strike history

The WeatherRadar puts precipitation, cloud cover, sunshine, fog and lightning on one map, and a tap opens the separate RainRadar, WindRadar, TemperatureRadar and LightningRadar. The lightning view marks each strike with a yellow dot, keeps strikes up to 15 minutes old and rings the newest in red, showing a storm's direction. A November 2025 update added fog icons to the main radar and minimum and maximum temperatures to the TemperatureRadar. One adjustment for U.S. users: the key shows rain in blue, snow in pink and freezing rain in salmon, and several Play reviewers found that confusing after the green-to-red scale of most U.S. radar maps. The same map runs on Android Auto, with split screen on wide car displays.

$8.99 a year to drop the ads, and what the privacy labels list

On the U.S. App Store, the ad-free subscription costs $1.49 a month or $8.99 a year; check the current price in the app, as it varies by region. Besides removing ads, it lets you rearrange the main page. It auto-renews, and the terms rule out refunds unless the law requires them. A one-time Weather & Radar Pro purchase once existed, but its Play listing is gone, so there is no lifetime option. The privacy notice dated August 2026 names more than 200 advertising partners and says Firebase collects age, gender and interest groups, while GPS location is used only for local forecasts. Apple's label lists identifiers and usage data as used to track you, and Google Play's Data safety form says data can't be deleted.

Weather & Radar vs The Weather Channel, AccuWeather and Windy.com

Paying costs less here than at The Weather Channel or AccuWeather. On the U.S. App Store, The Weather Channel prices its Ad Free plan at $1.99 a month or $9.99 a year, and AccuWeather's cheapest Premium plan runs $1.99 a month or $12.99 a year; both carry the Contains ads badge on Google Play. Windy.com has no ads badge, and its Windy Premium listings run from $2.99 to $29.99. At our October 2026 check, WetterOnline's app held 4.8 on Google Play from about 2.97 million reviews, against 4.6 for The Weather Channel and 3.6 for AccuWeather. The Bonn company has offered the app on both stores since 2012. Prices vary by region.

Pros

  • Free WeatherRadar loop layers rain, cloud, fog and lightning four days ahead
  • LightningRadar keeps strikes up to 15 minutes old, newest ringed in red
  • 90-minute outlook in 15-minute steps for short-notice plans
  • Ad-free plan costs $8.99 a year in the U.S., below The Weather Channel
  • Radar runs on Android Auto, including split screen on wide displays
  • Storm alerts promise up to 36 hours' notice, hurricanes up to 48

Cons

  • Scam-style pop-up ads, such as fake app-outdated warnings, still get through
  • Full-screen ads appear when switching between the radar and other screens
  • Privacy notice names over 200 ad partners, and Play's form says data can't be deleted
  • Blue-for-rain radar colors differ from the green scale many U.S. users know

Verdict

We scored the app 7.3. The radar earns it: four days of layered forecast, a 15-minute lightning history and Android Auto support, all free. Points come off for the ad load, including scam-style pop-ups the developer admits slip through, and a privacy notice naming over 200 ad partners. Take it if you check the radar often and will pay $8.99 a year to drop the ads. Skip it if you won't pay and can't stand full-screen ads, or if a blue rain scale would confuse you.

Core function8.5A four-day layered radar, 15-minute lightning history, 90-minute outlook and 14-day chart, all in the free tier.
Ease of use7.5Radar widget and Android Auto help, but reviewers call screens cluttered and the developer says Android lacks dark mode.
Monetisation6.5$8.99 a year undercuts rivals, yet free users get full-screen and scam-style ads, with no lifetime option.
Performance7.5Rated 4.8 on Google Play, but 41 of the 150 newest English reviews give one or two stars.
Privacy & permissions5.5GPS location stays out of ads, but over 200 ad partners and tracking identifiers come with the free tier.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is Weather & Radar free?

Yes. Forecasts, the four-day WeatherRadar, lightning tracking, the 14-day trend and severe weather alerts are free, paid for by banner and full-screen ads. The only purchase is an ad-free subscription, at $1.49 a month or $8.99 a year on the U.S. App Store. Check the current price in the app; it varies by region.

2

How far ahead does the Weather & Radar radar forecast go?

Up to four days. The WeatherRadar animates rain, cloud, fog, sunshine and lightning through four days out, with separate rain, wind, temperature and lightning layers. For the next hour and a half, a 90-minute outlook works in 15-minute steps, and a 14-day chart covers the longer trend.

3

How much does Weather & Radar ad-free cost?

On the U.S. App Store, the ad-free subscription costs $1.49 a month or $8.99 a year, and Google Play lists in-app items from $0.99 to $8.99. It renews automatically, with no lifetime option. Check the current price in the app; it varies by region.

4

How do I cancel Weather & Radar ad-free and delete my data?

Cancel in your App Store or Google Play subscriptions; on iPhone, turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the period ends. The terms treat paid fees as non-refundable unless the law requires otherwise. Google Play's Data safety form says data can't be deleted, but the August 2026 privacy notice accepts erasure requests at privacy@wetteronline.de.

5

Is Weather & Radar better than The Weather Channel?

It is cheaper to make ad-free: $8.99 a year here against $9.99 for The Weather Channel's Ad Free plan on the U.S. App Store, and both free versions carry ads. The Weather Channel also sells Premium at $29.99 a year. Check current prices in each app.
