Best Travel Apps, Ranked by Our Scores
Booking.com and Google Maps tie at the top of this list at 7.6, and between them they cover most of a trip: where to sleep and how to get around, both
Booking.com puts stays, flights, rental cars, airport taxis and attraction tickets under one account, and reserving a stay adds no booking fee: properties pay the company a commission once your stay ends. The free Genius program takes 10% off select stays from the first sign-in and up to 20% after 15 bookings in two years. The catch is per-rate fine print, because cancellation, prepayment and refund rules come from each property, not from the app.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-10-01. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
The company's developer documentation says US prices now include mandatory resort, service and destination fees, while government taxes may sit on a separate line disclosed before payment. Prices also vary by device and sign-in: properties may set Mobile rates for the app alone or for the app and mobile web, signed-in travelers can get Logged in deals, and country rates depend on where you book from. Airbnb has shown every guest a total with all fees before taxes since April 21, 2025. Two costs can still come on top: flights may carry a service fee from the company or its third-party ticket aggregator, and paying in your home currency can carry a fee built into the exchange rate.
Genius is free and starts with account creation: Level 1 takes 10% off select stays and rental cars, and 850,000 properties take part. Five completed bookings within two years unlock Level 2, with 10–15% off stays plus free breakfasts and room upgrades at select properties. Fifteen bookings unlock Level 3, with up to 20% off stays and priority access to a live agent. Discounts apply to the price before taxes and fees, and a level, once earned, is never taken away. Expedia's One Key, shared with Hotels.com and Vrbo, pays back in OneKeyCash instead of cutting the rate upfront. Recurring 2026 Google Play reviews say logged-out searches sometimes beat the Genius price.
The green Free cancellation tag is set per rate by each property, not by the app. Payment runs one of three ways: the property charges you at the stay, the property charges in advance with card details the platform forwards, or the platform collects the money and pays the property. Upfront payments may be pre-authorized at booking and may be non-refundable. Partner offers are paid at booking and cannot be modified. We Price Match refunds the difference if the same room with the same conditions is cheaper on another site after you book, excluding loyalty prices. Ranking is not neutral: commission level, Genius membership and, for US stays booked from the US, platform-handled payment can lift a property, and results tagged Ad are paid placements.
The store disclosures differ sharply: Google Play's Data safety section lists name, address, payment details, calendar events, voice recordings and device IDs among data that may be shared with other companies, while Apple's label declares only a device identifier, which may be used to track you across other companies' apps. The privacy notice updated in August 2026 adds AI memories, preferences stored by a third-party AI model that you can view or delete. The notice also recommends two-factor authentication on the account, and recorded customer service calls are deleted after 30 days by default. Its safety page warns of WhatsApp phishing and says it never asks for card details by email, phone, text or WhatsApp.

We scored it 7.6 for breadth and a loyalty program that pays from the first booking, with Genius levels kept for life. Take it if you book hotels several times a year and want stays, cars and taxis in one place. Look elsewhere if you mainly buy flights, which pass through aggregators with their own fees, or if you need one support desk to own every refund dispute.

No, not for stays: the app is free, and properties pay the company a commission after your stay. You pay the property's own rate plus its taxes and charges. Flights are the exception, since the company or its ticket aggregator may add a service fee, included in the fare shown.
Complete five bookings within two years while signed in. Stays, flights, rental cars, taxis and attraction tickets all count, each reservation once regardless of nights or rooms. Level 2 adds 10–15% off select stays plus free breakfasts and room upgrades at some properties, and the level is kept for life.
Usually because of government taxes. US prices include mandatory fees such as resort charges, but government taxes may be listed separately before payment. Extras, a property's damage deposit or bank fees on a foreign-currency card can add more. Prices vary by property, date and region.
Only if your rate says Free cancellation and you cancel before its deadline. Each property sets its own policy, and non-refundable rates return nothing. Prepayments may be pre-authorized at booking, Partner offers cannot be modified, and unspent rewards earned by a cancelled trip leave your Wallet.
Treat messages about your booking with caution: the company warns that phishing quoting real booking details has increased on WhatsApp. It says it never asks for card details by email, phone, text or WhatsApp. Pay only as your confirmation states, and never with gift cards.
