Best Travel Apps, Ranked by Our Scores
Booking.com and Google Maps tie at the top of this list at 7.6, and between them they cover most of a trip: where to sleep and how to get around, both
Google Maps is the default map for most of the world: turn-by-turn navigation with live traffic, business pages with hours and reviews, shared lists of places, and map layers covering transit, cycling, air quality and wildfires. A newer panel called Ask Maps answers travel questions in plain language. It is free, carries advertising, and its two store ratings disagree more sharply than any other app here.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-09-07. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
The AI panel takes a question — how to reach the airport by six to collect someone — and returns a comparison rather than a route: driving at nineteen to twenty-nine minutes with advice to leave by half past five, and the train alternative at forty-six minutes for $11.80, each with its own start button. That is the useful shape for a decision, because the answer includes the fare and the traffic assumption. Ordinary navigation sits underneath it, with speed limits shown, delays marked on the route and a re-centre button when you wander off.
Three things keep it installed after the driving is done. Business pages carry opening hours, a price band, review counts, photos and buttons to reserve a table or order — often more current than the restaurant's own website. Shared lists let several people collaborate on a set of places, with an invite button and a count of how many are saved. And the layer picker goes well past satellite and terrain: transit, traffic, cycling, Street View, air quality, wildfires and a 3D view, each toggled from the same sheet.
Apple's store shows 4.7 from 7.35 million ratings. Google's own store shows 3.2 from 19.5 million reviews — the lowest score of any app reviewed here, on a product with more than ten billion installs. The Android complaints centre on interface changes and battery use rather than on the maps themselves. The listing also carries a Contains ads badge, with sponsored pins appearing in search results, and Google Play records twelve collected categories including location, though it declares no third-party sharing. Neither store lists an in-app purchase, so the only money in the app moves between businesses and Google rather than through the user.

Still the most complete map on a phone, and Ask Maps is a genuine improvement rather than an AI badge — comparing a drive against a train with the fare attached is the answer people actually want. Two things to weigh: everything here is built on continuous location history feeding Google's advertising, and the Android version carries a 3.2 rating that its own users keep restating. Download offline maps before you travel.

Yes, with no in-app purchases and no subscription. Advertising pays for it: the Play listing carries a Contains ads badge, and sponsored business pins appear in search results and along routes. Nothing in navigation, transit or business listings is behind a paywall.
A question box that answers travel decisions in plain language. Ask how to reach an airport by a certain time and it compares driving with public transport, giving durations, a departure time and the ticket price, each with a start button. It is faster than checking two apps against each other.
The app is free everywhere, but live traffic and search need data, so roaming is the real expense. Offline maps can be downloaded for a chosen area in advance, which covers navigation without a connection — the feature to set up before a trip rather than after landing.
The 3.2 average comes from 19.5 million reviews and concentrates on interface changes, battery drain and unwanted features rather than on map accuracy. The iPhone version of the same product holds 4.7. Read the recent Android reviews before assuming the score reflects the maps themselves.
Waze, owned by the same company, reports hazards faster from other drivers but has no offline maps. Apple Maps is cleaner on an iPhone and collects less. For business hours, transit and coverage outside major cities, this one still has no real rival.

Waze wins the driving half of this list at 7.7, because other drivers see things a traffic algorithm cannot. Google Maps is the better single app if y
