About Lyft

Lyft shows an upfront fare for each ride type, from Wait & Save to XL and Black, and can fold Prime Time surcharges into that quote when demand spikes. Scheduled pickups up to 90 days ahead, bikeshare in five US metros and a safety kit with ADT help and on-device audio recording sit around the ride. The catch is the clock: a cancellation fee can apply 30 seconds after a driver accepts.

Lyft Review: Upfront Fares and Safety Tools, With a 30-Second Cancel Clock

Upfront fares, Prime Time and the 30-second cancellation fee

Each request shows an upfront price built from a base rate, tolls, a regional flat service fee and third-party charges like airport fees. In busy periods, which the Terms of Service call Prime Time, charges may rise substantially, and the increase can be built into the quoted fare. Waiting more than 10 seconds to confirm, adding a stop or changing the destination can change the final price. The help center lists a cancellation fee from 30 seconds after a driver accepts, 30 seconds after booking Wait & Save, or after three cancellations in 15 minutes; Uber's driver help sets its economy threshold at two minutes after the request. Of the 150 newest English Play reviews (September 25 to October 1, 2026), 84 gave one or two stars, roughly a third of them citing fares or charges.

Background checks every 12 months, Smart Trip Check-In and ADT

Drivers are screened before their first trip with a Social Security number trace, nationwide, county and federal criminal searches and the Justice Department's 50-state sex offender registry, then again at least every 12 months. Since 2019 active drivers have also been monitored continuously for new convictions and, through SambaSafety, for driving violations. Smart Trip Check-In contacts you if a ride shows long stops or a mid-ride cancellation, and US riders can reach ADT agents from the app. Audio recording runs on every ride, only from 9 PM to 6 AM, or on demand; files stay encrypted on your phone unless attached to a safety report. Women+ Connect prefers women and nonbinary drivers but may still match a man, and rating a driver three stars or fewer for safety blocks future pairings with that driver.

Lyft Pink at $9.99 a month, plus Price Lock at $2.99

Pink costs $9.99 a month or $99 a year, charged to your account's default payment method rather than through Google Play or the App Store; digital wallets and prepaid cards are refused. Members get free Priority Pickup upgrades when available, 5% off Standard, Extra Comfort and XL (not Wait & Save), waived $20 lost-item fees and 12 free bike or scooter unlocks a year. The cancellation perk returns a fee as a $5 ride credit up to three times a month if you rebook within 15 minutes. All Access, $199 a year, adds 10% off Black and unlimited 45-minute classic rides on Citi Bike, Divvy, BIKETOWN and Lyft Bike. Uber One also costs $9.99 a month but returns 5% on rides as credits. Price Lock, a separate $2.99 monthly pass, holds one commute's fare until savings reach $50. Prices are regional and may change.

Background location, ad sharing and sponsored map ads

The privacy policy dated July 1, 2026 says the rider app collects precise location while open and in the background from request until the ride ends. A Privacy setting narrows that to request-to-pickup or foreground only, though trip location still comes from the driver's phone; scooters and e-bikes are tracked at all times. The policy rules out selling data for money but allows sharing it for personalized ads on and off the platform, which some state laws may treat as a sale. Google Play's Data safety form lists approximate location, name, email and phone number as shared for advertising or marketing; Apple's label names location and identifiers as data used to track you. Both stores flag ads, which the in-house ad unit sells as visual ads, sponsored map ads and sponsored rides. Ride and payment records are kept at least seven years.

Pros

  • Receipts itemize base rate, service fee, tolls and airport charges
  • Scheduled airport-bound rides earn $15–$50 credits when pickup runs late
  • Audio recordings stay encrypted on your phone unless you file a report
  • Drivers are rescreened at least yearly and monitored continuously for convictions
  • Ride types span Wait & Save, Green, XL, Black SUV and wheelchair Access
  • Unlocks Citi Bike, Divvy, BIKETOWN and Capital Bikeshare bikes from one app

Cons

  • A cancellation fee can apply 30 seconds after a driver accepts
  • Approximate location, name, email and phone are shared for advertising or marketing
  • Recent Play reviews report long waits, driver reassignments and fares above the quote
  • Damage or abuse fees reach $250; charges are non-refundable unless law requires

Verdict

We score Lyft 6.8 for a wide ride-type ladder, automatic credits when scheduled rides to the airport start late, and safety tools that pair yearly driver rescreening with continuous monitoring and ADT help. It loses points on a cancellation fee that starts 30 seconds after a driver accepts, ads and data shared with marketers, and recent reviews about waits. Take it to compare fares against Uber or to ride Citi Bike or Divvy. Skip it if plans often change after booking, or if a Curb taxi covers your trips.

Ease of use7.0Itemized receipts, but the price can change after a 10-second delay and cancellation fees start at 30 seconds.

Performance6.0Rated 4.9 on the App Store, yet 84 of the 150 newest English Play reviews gave one or two stars.
Privacy & permissions5.5Location, name, email and phone shared for marketing, tracking listed on Apple's label, and ride records kept at least seven years.

Frequently asked questions

1

How much is the Lyft cancellation fee, and when is it charged?

No single amount is published; the help center says the fee goes to the driver and varies with demand. It applies from 30 seconds after a driver accepts, 30 seconds after booking Wait & Save, once the driver arrives, or after three cancellations in 15 minutes. Pending holds from cancelled requests clear in 5 to 7 business days.

2

What is the difference between Lyft Wait & Save and Priority Pickup?

Wait & Save locks a lower price in exchange for a longer wait while a driver suited to your route is found; Priority Pickup costs slightly more for a faster pickup. Both appear only in some regions, depending on nearby drivers. Pink's 5% member discount does not apply to Wait & Save.

3

Is Lyft Pink worth it?

Only for frequent riders. At $9.99 a month or $99 a year, Pink adds 5% off Standard, Extra Comfort and XL, free Priority Pickup upgrades when available, waived $20 lost-item fees and 12 bike or scooter unlocks a year. The discount alone covers the fee at about $200 of eligible rides a month. Prices are regional and may change.

4

How do I cancel or pause Lyft Pink?

In the main menu, open the Pink membership and tap Manage Plan. A pause lasts up to 28 days, once per billing cycle on monthly plans and twice a year on annual ones. Cancellation takes effect at the next billing cycle, with a refund only if no benefits were used that cycle.

5

Does Lyft track your location when you are not using the app?

No, says the help center: location is accessed only while the app runs. Background sharing, switchable under Settings and Privacy, lasts from request to drop-off or only until pickup, and the driver's phone still logs the trip. Google Play's Data safety form lists approximate location as shared for advertising or marketing.
