About HERE WeGo Maps & Navigation

HERE WeGo is a navigation app with no price tag: neither Google Play nor the App Store lists ads or in-app purchases, yet it gives voice turn-by-turn guidance plus Android Auto and CarPlay support. Its edge is offline driving, with whole regions, countries or continents stored on the phone. The limits are a car-screen menu that covers much of the map until guidance starts, and voices borrowed from the phone's text-to-speech engine.

HERE WeGo Review: Free Offline Navigation, Rough Edges on the Car Screen

Free, ad-free and offline: what the Use app offline switch covers

There is no premium tier to unlock: lane recommendations, speed limit alerts, safety camera warnings and car-screen support all ship in the free download. Under Your Maps, the Download maps screen groups packages by continent, from a single region up to a whole continent, and Android phones can store them on an SD card. The Use app offline toggle must also be on: HERE's help center says a route started in online mode keeps trying to reconnect when the signal drops and has to be restarted offline. Offline maps are not offered for Japan, Korea or China. Since mid-2024, HERE says, map updates arrive roughly weekly, though reviewers say they must be installed by hand.

Android Auto and CarPlay at no cost, minus a free-drive mode

Car-screen support is where the app differs most from Sygic, whose help center keeps Android Auto and CarPlay behind a Premium+ subscription. In WeGo both are free; recent releases added CarPlay split screen in August 2025, head-unit widgets in November 2025, and road-sign and danger-zone alerts on the car display in February 2026. The weak spot is Android Auto before a route starts: with no free-drive mode, a shortcut menu covers a large part of the map, and in September 2026 the developer told a reviewer that starting guidance is the only way to shrink it. HERE's help page also warns that stops and route preferences are locked on Android Auto once guidance begins.

Transit in 1,900+ cities, voices borrowed from your phone

The route screen puts car, public transport, walking and bike modes side by side, and the store listings claim transit coverage in more than 1,900 cities, though the help center warns that departures are not available in every country. One store screenshot shows a 28-minute Berlin trip with tram M2 and S-Bahn S7 legs, credited to bahn.de. A September 2026 Play review from Edmonton, Canada, reports bus arrivals shown an hour off. The app also ships no voices of its own; it uses the phone's text-to-speech engine, with 42 language options, and after Samsung restricted third-party access to its engine, the developer began telling Galaxy owners to install another.

What HERE Traffic costs: location data instead of money

The seller is HERE Europe B.V., part of the mapping business Nokia sold to Audi, BMW and Daimler in 2015 at a €2.8 billion valuation; HERE's investor page now also shows Intel, Bosch, Mitsubishi, NTT and Pioneer. Its privacy supplement, effective April 2025, spells out the trade. Live traffic can only be enabled if you contribute location, speed, direction and timestamps, optionally while the app is closed, when it tries to detect driving. Offline mode sends HERE no location data. Apple's label lists no tracking and Play's Data safety form reports no third-party sharing, yet the supplement reserves room for location-based ads and sharing the advertising ID with ad networks. Updates keep coming, with 13 iOS releases from February to September 2026.

Pros

  • No ads or in-app purchases listed on Google Play or the App Store
  • Region, country or continent downloads for offline driving, SD card on Android
  • Android Auto and CarPlay work free, while Sygic charges for both
  • Road incident reporting and confirmation arrived with the August 2026 update
  • Offline mode sends no location data to HERE, per its privacy supplement
  • Six route avoidances, including tolls, ferries, tunnels and unpaved roads

Cons

  • No free-drive mode: the Android Auto menu covers much of the map
  • Voices depend on the phone's TTS engine; Samsung's restriction left some Galaxy phones silent
  • Reviewers say offline maps must be updated by hand, and downloads can freeze
  • 56 of the 150 newest English Play reviews gave one or two stars

Verdict

We score it 7.5: offline country and continent maps, transit in more than 1,900 cities and car-screen support cost nothing, with no ads or in-app purchases listed in either store. Take it if you drive abroad without data, want a free Android Auto or CarPlay navigator, or want to leave Google's ecosystem. Skip it if you keep the map open on Android Auto without a route, rely on Samsung's voice engine, or need Google Maps-level business listings.

Core function7.5Country and continent downloads, transit in 1,900+ cities and free car screens; reviewers find offline address search weaker.
Ease of use6.5No free-drive mode on Android Auto, manual map updates and a separate offline toggle add friction.
Monetisation9.5Nothing to buy and no ads flagged in either store; every feature ships in the free download.
Performance6.056 of the 150 newest English Play reviews gave 1–2 stars, citing GPS lag and frozen map downloads.
Privacy & permissions7.5Apple's label lists no tracking, but live traffic requires sharing location, optionally while the app is closed.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is HERE WeGo completely free?

Yes. Neither Google Play nor the App Store lists in-app purchases or ads for it: voice guidance, offline maps, speed limit alerts and Android Auto or CarPlay come in the same free download. HERE's privacy supplement does reserve room for location-based advertising, but neither store flags ads on the date we checked.

2

Does HERE WeGo work offline without internet?

Yes, once maps are downloaded. Pick a region, country or continent under Your Maps, then switch on Use app offline; without it, a route started online keeps trying to reconnect when the signal drops. Offline maps are not offered for Japan, Korea or China, and some 2026 reviewers say address search finds less offline than online.

3

What is the catch if HERE WeGo is free?

The trade is data rather than money. Live traffic works only if you agree to send HERE your location, speed, direction and timestamps, optionally even while the app is closed. HERE says this data is anonymized, and Apple's label lists no tracking. You can switch Traffic off under About, Legal and Notices and still navigate.

4

Can I export my saved places from HERE WeGo or delete my data?

Yes. Each Collections folder can be shared as a file from its three-dot menu, and the import option accepts .geojson files. Search history clears under About, Legal and Notices. To erase account data, HERE points users to the request form at privacy.here.com/dsr, which confirms the request by email.

5

Is HERE WeGo better than Google Maps for offline navigation?

For offline driving abroad it asks less of you. Google's help says its offline areas must be updated before they expire, and that transit, walking and cycling directions are unavailable offline. WeGo downloads maps by country or continent and includes Android Auto and CarPlay at no cost. Many reviewers still find more businesses in Google Maps.
