About Sygic GPS Navigation & Maps

Sygic GPS Navigation & Maps is free to download, but the free tier only searches, plans and draws routes on offline maps; voice guidance, turn-by-turn directions, live traffic and Android Auto or CarPlay all need a Premium+ subscription. What sets it apart is storage: whole countries or regions built from TomTom or OpenStreetMap data stay on the phone and work without signal. The catch is frequent upgrade prompts, which paying users report too.

Sygic GPS Navigation Review: Offline Maps Done Right, Guidance Sold Separately

Free Basic version: route planning yes, voice guidance no

Since July 2026, new installs open straight into the free Basic state; the automatic seven-day trial that used to come first is gone. Basic keeps offline maps, address and place search, route planning and the route line. It does not speak, gives no turn-by-turn instructions, and shows no speed limits, lane arrows or live traffic. The help center also confirms that Android Auto and CarPlay stay locked in the unpaid version. In practice the free app is a trip planner and an offline atlas rather than a navigator, which is why several September 2026 Play reviews complain about driving through city traffic with no voice. The only way to try guidance before paying is the annual Premium+ plan with a three-day trial, offered inside the app but not on the company's web store.

Offline maps from TomTom and OSM: 3 free updates a year, or 12

Maps download per country, and the largest ones, the US included, split into regions, so a driver can keep one state instead of a continent. The catalog covers more than 200 countries, and the help center warns that maps take anywhere from hundreds of megabytes to several gigabytes; on Android they can sit on an SD card. The data comes from TomTom or OpenStreetMap depending on the map, which creates one quirk: a route crossing several maps calculates only if all of them come from the same provider. Free users get three map updates a year, in January, May and September, while Premium+ makes them monthly. Update every map together, because a partial update can delete the others. Google Maps works differently: its saved offline areas expire unless refreshed and give no walking or transit directions offline.

Premium+ at $19.99 a year, and what it still leaves out

Premium+ is sold for three months or a year only; there is no monthly plan. On October 2, 2026 the company's web store listed $19.99 a year and $11.99 for three months, while the US App Store shows annual tiers from $14.49 to $26.99 and a $12.49 three-month tier, and the trial version renews at the full annual price. Check the current price in the app; it varies by region and promotion. The money buys TomTom Traffic refreshed every two minutes, lane guidance, the Head-up Display, Dashcam, Live Route Alternatives and car-screen support. Lifetime Premium licenses stopped selling in 2021; old ones still work but miss newer Premium+ features and cannot move between Android and iOS, while Premium+ can. Motorbike Mode costs $49.99 more as a one-time add-on, and cancelling stops renewal without a refund.

Speed cameras, SmartCam and the location data behind them

The feature glossary describes alerts for more than 60,000 fixed speed cameras as free and offline, while mobile and average-speed cameras need Premium+, and mobile ones a live connection. The company itself says camera content is not legal in Switzerland, Liechtenstein or Turkey, and France gets generic danger zones instead, so check local rules. SmartCam bundles Dashcam, sign recognition and Real View, but sign recognition does not work in the US, Canada or Puerto Rico, and camera features can heat up older phones. On privacy, Apple's label says location, contact info, identifiers and usage data may be used to track you across other companies' apps, with precise location linked to third-party advertising. The developer, Sygic a. s. of Bratislava, is part of the Eurowag Group and accepts data deletion requests.

Pros

  • Offline maps for more than 200 countries, split into regions to save space
  • TomTom Traffic on Premium+ refreshes every two minutes and suggests faster routes
  • Premium+ moves between Android and iOS; old lifetime licenses never could
  • Head-up Display, Dashcam and lane guidance come in the same subscription
  • Monthly map updates on Premium+, three a year for free users

Cons

  • Free version has no voice guidance, turn-by-turn directions or speed limits
  • Android Auto and CarPlay work only with a paid Premium+ subscription
  • Paying users report full-screen promos for Motorbike and Camper add-ons at launch
  • 52 of the 150 newest English Play reviews gave 1–2 stars, citing routing and crashes

Verdict

We score it 6.2: the offline maps, two-minute TomTom traffic and extras such as the Head-up Display are strong, but the free version cannot guide you, and upgrade prompts reach paying users too. Take it if you drive abroad or outside reliable coverage and will pay about $20 a year on the web store for voice guidance and car-screen support. Skip it if you want free turn-by-turn directions, which Google Maps and Waze provide, or if you object to location data feeding advertising.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is Sygic GPS Navigation free to use?

Only partly. The free Basic version downloads offline maps, searches addresses and plans routes, but it gives no voice guidance, turn-by-turn directions, speed limits, lane assistant or live traffic, and Android Auto and CarPlay are locked. Since July 2026 new users no longer get an automatic seven-day trial; the annual Premium+ plan bought in the app includes a three-day free trial instead.

2

Where do Sygic maps come from and how often are they updated?

Sygic's offline maps are built from TomTom or OpenStreetMap data, depending on the map. Free users get three updates a year, in January, May and September, while Premium+ adds monthly updates, usually in the second week. A route that crosses several maps calculates only when all of them come from the same provider, and the company recommends updating every downloaded map at once.

3

How much does Sygic Premium+ cost?

On October 2, 2026 Sygic's web store charged $19.99 a year or $11.99 for three months; there is no monthly plan. The US App Store lists annual tiers from $14.49 to $26.99 and a $12.49 three-month tier. Lifetime licenses are no longer sold, and Motorbike Mode is a separate $49.99 one-time purchase. Prices vary by region and promotion.

4

Does Sygic work offline, and what happens if I cancel Premium+?

Yes, once maps are downloaded, search, route planning and navigation run without a connection; traffic, fuel prices, route sharing, mobile speed cameras and parking info need internet. A cancelled Premium+ stays active until the paid period ends, with no refund. After that only the free Basic features remain: offline maps and route planning, but no voice guidance.

5

Are Sygic speed camera alerts legal?

Sygic says its speed camera content is not legal in Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Turkey, and in France it shows danger zones instead of camera points. Elsewhere the company asks drivers to check local rules themselves. Fixed cameras come from a database of more than 60,000 locations, while mobile camera alerts need Premium+ and a connection.
