Best AI Transcription Apps, Ranked
Every transcription app advertises free minutes, and almost none of them means the number the way you would. One caps each recording at three minutes,
Otter turns a phone into a live transcriber: tap record, watch words appear as people speak, then get a summary, action items and an outline. It also sends a bot called Notetaker into Zoom, Google Meet and Teams calls from a synced calendar. The free Basic plan gives 300 minutes a month, but only the first 30 minutes of any one conversation stay readable until you pay.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-10-06. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
Basic costs nothing, and its limits are published in Otter's help center. You get 300 transcription minutes a month, three audio or video imports in total (per account, not per month) and a history that shows the 25 most recent conversations; older ones are archived, not deleted. The sharper limit is length. A recording that runs past 30 minutes keeps going, but only the first half hour of the transcript can be read until a paid plan opens the rest with an Unlock full transcript button. Deleted conversations still count against the 300 minutes. Pro raises the caps to 1,200 minutes and 90 minutes per conversation, and Business allows four hours. Basic playback stays at 1x, and exports are limited to mp3 and txt.
Notetaker works from a Google or Microsoft calendar you connect. Any event holding a Zoom, Google Meet or Teams link can be joined automatically, and the bot enters the call as a participant named in the form [Name]'s Notetaker (Otter.ai). A setting called Meetings I manually select stops auto-join, so only events you toggle on get the bot. Each conversation ends with a summary, action items and an outline, and Automated Slide Capture saves slides shown in virtual meetings. Speaker labels are added after a recording stops: new voices appear as Speaker 1 and Speaker 2 until you tag names. Fillers such as um and uh are dropped from the text. Otter's accuracy FAQ says results are best with Notetaker, which records a meeting's internal audio instead of relying on a device microphone.
The pricing page lists Pro at $16.99 a month, or $8.33 a month on an annual plan; Business is $19.99 a month annually. Students and teachers with a .edu address get 20 percent off Pro, which brings the annual price to $79.99. These are USD web prices and may differ in the app stores. Cancelling keeps paid features until the period ends, then the workspace drops to Basic. Subscriptions are non-refundable under Otter's terms, and uninstalling the app cancels nothing. The privacy policy, effective June 16, 2026, says Otter trains its own AI on de-identified audio and transcripts. Google Play's data safety section lists voice recordings, contacts, calendar events and photos as optional data, with deletion on request.

Otter earns its score for live transcription, automatic summaries and a Notetaker that joins calendar meetings, held back by a Basic plan that hides everything past 30 minutes. Take it for lectures, interviews and meetings in English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese or Chinese, and test it on short recordings first. Skip it if you need recordings over half an hour for free, phone calls captured inside the app, or audio that must never feed AI training.

Yes, the Basic plan is free with 300 transcription minutes a month. Each conversation is capped at 30 readable minutes, only three audio or video files can be imported in total, and the history shows the 25 most recent conversations. Paid plans raise or lift those limits. Published limits can change.
Not directly. Apple and Google restrict third-party apps from recording calls, so the call must be recorded with the phone's built-in feature and then shared into Otter as a file. A live Otter recording pauses while a call is in progress. Imported files can be up to 5 GB, and they receive a summary and speaker tags.
The pricing page lists Pro at $16.99 a month, or $8.33 a month on an annual plan. It raises the cap to 1,200 minutes and 90 minutes per conversation, allows 10 imports a month and adds playback up to 3x. Worth it if you routinely record past 30 minutes. Prices are USD web listings and can change.
It records offline but cannot transcribe offline. Live text pauses and resumes once the connection returns, and a recording stopped offline uploads later. Keep the app open until that upload finishes, because closing it first may lose the audio. If you cancel Pro, the workspace drops to Basic and its limits apply again.
Notta's free plan allows 120 minutes a month and 3 minutes per conversation, against Otter's 300 and 30. Rev's free plan offers 45 AI minutes a month, and its human-verified transcripts cost $1.99 a minute. Check each company's pricing page, because these limits change.

Most people need fewer AI apps than the stores suggest: one assistant, one tool for answers you can check, and then only the apps that do a job nothin
Google Translate is the best free utility app: it translates text, speech and camera images, works offline once you download a language, and has no ad
