Best AI Transcription Apps, Ranked
Every transcription app advertises free minutes, and almost none of them means the number the way you would. One caps each recording at three minutes,
Rev's phone recorder is free to download and record with, and it shows a live transcript while you talk. The Free plan covers 45 AI transcription minutes a month, English only, and every upgrade is bought on rev.com in a browser, not inside the app. It targets interviews, case notes and field research, and it cannot record phone calls.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-10-06. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
The Free plan gives one user 45 AI transcription and caption minutes a month, English only, plus the mobile app itself. Essentials lifts that to 5,000 minutes per user across three seats and adds Spanish; Pro reaches 10,000 minutes, five seats and 37-plus languages including Spanglish. US list prices are $29.99 a month on Essentials and $59.99 on Pro per seat, or $25.49 and $47.99 a month when billed annually. Upgrades cannot be made in the app: the official FAQ sends you to a browser, then Manage Subscription and Modify Plan. For a pure free quota, Otter lists 300 monthly minutes on its Basic plan and Notta 120, though Notta caps each conversation at three minutes. Prices are regional and can change.
The plus button on the home screen starts Record Audio or Record Video, using the built-in microphone or a connected one, and a live transcript from Rev's Live ASR scrolls while you talk. The bookmark icon marks a moment and takes an optional note, and the store's sample recording labels two speakers with timestamps. Version 7.3.0, from May 2026, made phone calls, Siri and AirPods disconnects pause the recording and resume it automatically. What it will not do is capture the call itself: the App Store listing rules out call recording. Offline use is unconfirmed: the App Store listing makes no offline claim.
A 99%-plus human transcript costs $1.99 per audio minute, delivered in 12 hours or less, and subscribers get 3% to 15% off depending on plan and billing period. The App Store also sells credit packs: 1 credit is $1.99, 10 are $16.99, 30 are $47.99 and 100 are $149.99. Per-minute billing has a catch, since one 2024 App Store reviewer said dead air during a recording was charged too. On data, the App Store label lists email, name, audio data and crash and performance data as linked to you, with no tracking section. Rev states that files use TLS in transit and S3 server-side encryption at rest, that it holds SOC 2 Type II, and that it never trains external LLMs on customer content. HIPAA and CJIS handling sits on the Unlimited plan only.

A 7.3 for a recorder that is free to start, pauses cleanly through calls and ships a live transcript, bookmarks and role-based sharing, but loses points for billing handled outside the app and upload complaints. Take it if you record interviews, witness statements or research sessions and are fine buying a plan on rev.com. Skip it if you want a generous free quota, such as Otter's 300 minutes or Notta's 120, need phone-call recording, or want plain-text downloads straight from the phone.

Rev publishes SOC 2 Type II compliance on every plan, encrypts files with TLS 1.2 and 1.3 in transit and S3 server-side encryption at rest, and says it never trains external AI models on customer content. HIPAA and CJIS handling is reserved for the Unlimited plan. We do not rate safety, so read the terms before recording privileged material. Otter and Notta are the closest alternatives.
