About Microsoft Word

Word on a phone is a real editor rather than a viewer: full formatting, tables with style galleries, spell-checking as you type, Read Aloud, and documents that open exactly as they were saved on a desktop. Creating and editing is free. What a Microsoft 365 subscription adds is Copilot, which drafts and rewrites text, starting at $9.99 a month.

Microsoft Word Review: Free to Edit, $9.99 for Copilot

Copilot Drafts, and It Needs Microsoft 365

The AI panel takes an instruction — outline a blog post about a subject — and returns a structured draft with headings and bullet points inside the document, ready to edit rather than pasted from elsewhere. It also rewrites and summarises existing text. That layer is the paid one: Microsoft 365 Personal costs $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, Family $12.99 or $129.99 for up to six people, and a Premium tier runs $19.99 monthly. Everything below Copilot — typing, formatting, tables, comments and co-authoring — works without paying. Prices are US listings.

Tables, Styles and Read Aloud on a Phone

The mobile editor is more complete than its rivals. Table styles come from a gallery of plain and grid designs rather than manual borders, the font panel exposes the same controls as the desktop version, and Read Aloud plays a document back — useful for proofreading a long text on a train. Spelling and grammar corrections appear inline as suggestions above the word. Headings navigation jumps through a long document by structure, which is the difference between editing on a phone and merely reading on one.

A Billion Installs, and a Heavy One

Google Play records more than a billion installs and a 4.8 average across 17.2 million reviews, which is as close to universal as this catalogue gets. The costs are practical: this is one of the larger installs here, and the iPhone build now requires a recent iOS release, so older hardware is stranded. The data card lists nine collected categories with location and device identifiers shared with third parties, and there is no advertising badge — the subscription, not advertising, is what pays for it. Google Play last recorded an update in August 2026, so the mobile version tracks the desktop release rather than lagging a year behind it.

Pros

  • Creating and editing documents costs nothing
  • Table style galleries and full formatting on a phone
  • Read Aloud plays a document back for proofreading
  • Documents open unchanged from the desktop version
  • Rated 4.8 across 17.2 million Google Play reviews

Cons

  • Copilot requires a subscription from $9.99 a month
  • One of the heavier installs for a text editor
  • The iPhone build requires a recent iOS release
  • Nine data categories collected, two shared onward

Verdict

The best word processor on a phone, and the free tier is more generous than its reputation suggests — full editing, formatting, tables and co-authoring without paying anything. Subscribe only if Copilot's drafting is worth $9.99 a month to you; nothing else meaningful is behind the paywall. The real costs are storage and a recent iOS requirement, both of which matter more on an older phone.

Core function9.0A genuine editor: formatting, tables, comments and co-authoring all work on a phone screen.
Ease of use8.0Desktop-grade menus compressed into panels; powerful, occasionally cramped on a small display.
Monetisation7.0Editing is free, Copilot is $9.99 a month, and nothing is advertising-supported.
Performance6.5A heavy install and a recent-iOS requirement, though long documents scroll smoothly.
Privacy & permissions6.5Nine collected categories, with location and device identifiers shared with third parties.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is Microsoft Word free on a phone?

Yes for the parts most people need: creating documents, editing, formatting, templates, comments and real-time co-authoring all work without paying, and there is no advertising. The paid line is Copilot and the wider Microsoft 365 features, which start at $9.99 a month.

2

What can Copilot do in Word?

Draft from an instruction — an outline for a blog post, a letter, a summary — directly into the document, then rewrite or shorten passages you select. It works on the text in front of it rather than in a separate chat window, which is the practical difference from pasting from another AI app.

3

How much is Microsoft 365?

Personal costs $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year; Family is $12.99 monthly or $129.99 annually and covers up to six people; a Premium tier is $19.99 a month. Older Office 365 plans still appear in the store listing at $6.99 and $9.99 monthly for existing subscribers.

4

Can you edit documents without a Microsoft account?

Signing in is expected — the app ties documents to OneDrive and to the licence — though files stored on the device can be opened and read. In practice, treat an account as required, and note that it is the same account whether you use the free tier or a subscription.

5

What are the alternatives?

Google Docs is free, lighter and better at collaboration in a browser, but weaker on complex formatting. Apple's Pages handles layout well and costs nothing on Apple hardware. For documents that must survive a round trip to a desktop with formatting intact, this is still the safe choice.
