About Microsoft Excel

Excel edits real spreadsheets on a phone at no cost — the subscription only becomes compulsory above a 10.1-inch screen. Charts, sorting, filtering, ink annotation and threaded comments are all present, in a layout that keeps the ribbon hidden until the formula bar calls it up. What no design fixes is the screen: twenty visible rows make complicated work slower than a laptop.

Microsoft Excel Review: Free Below 10.1 Inches

Free Editing Stops at a 10.1-Inch Screen

The rule is about the device rather than the file. Core editing — open, create, change, save — is free on Android and iOS devices measuring 10.1 inches or less, which covers every phone and the smaller tablets. Above that size, editing requires a Microsoft 365 subscription: Personal at $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year with 1 TB of storage, or Family at $12.99 and $129.99 shared between six people. The same subscription unlocks the advanced features on small screens too, so a large tablet pays for what a phone already has. Prices are US figures and change by region.

Sheet View, Sort and Filter, and Aptos at 12 Points

The ribbon lives in a panel that slides up from the formula bar. Home opens on the Aptos typeface at 12 points with bold, italic, underline and strikethrough, then borders, fill colour and font colour. Sort and Filter offers smallest to largest, largest to smallest, filter items, number filters — and Sheet View, which sorts or filters a shared file for you alone without disturbing what anyone else sees on screen. Charts open a type picker that previews pie, doughnut and three-dimensional variants against the actual data before the chart is committed to the sheet.

Comments, Ink and a Data Card With Location on It

Threaded comments carry @mentions, names and timestamps, so an argument about text size is settled in the cell rather than over email. An ink layer draws across the grid with a choice of pens — the store screens show handwritten notes over a colour-coded project planner, which is a fair use for a phone. Google Play's card is the surprise: approximate location and device IDs shared with third parties, and purchase history, installed apps, in-app search history and photos among the collected categories. A billion installs, 4.8 stars from 9.55 million reviews.

Pros

  • Free editing on any device up to 10.1 inches
  • Sheet View filters a shared file without disturbing others
  • Comments carry @mentions, names and timestamps
  • Chart picker previews pie, doughnut and 3-D types
  • Rated 4.8 on Google Play across 9.55 million reviews

Cons

  • Editing on larger tablets needs a paid subscription
  • Approximate location and device IDs are shared onward
  • Installed apps and search history sit on the data card
  • Formula-heavy work stays slower than on a laptop

Verdict

The rare Microsoft app that is honestly free where it matters: full editing on a phone, no advertising, no crippled formulas. Sheet View and threaded comments make a shared workbook survive several people at once, and files stay editable offline. Buy the subscription for a large tablet or for the desktop apps, not for the phone. The data card, with location and installed apps on it, is the one blemish.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is Excel free on a phone?

Yes. Viewing, creating and editing spreadsheets is free on any Android or iOS device with a screen of 10.1 inches or less, which includes every phone. A Microsoft 365 subscription is required to edit on anything larger, and to reach the advanced features on smaller devices.

2

What is Sheet View?

A private filter and sort over a shared workbook. You can reorder rows or hide values to find something without changing the view of anyone else working in the same file at the same time — the feature that makes a shared budget usable by more than one person at once.

3

What does the subscription cost?

Microsoft 365 Personal is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year with 1 TB of cloud storage; Family costs $12.99 or $129.99 and covers six people, each with their own terabyte. Both include the desktop applications, which is usually the real reason to buy rather than mobile editing.

4

Does it work without a connection?

Files already downloaded to the device open and edit offline, with changes syncing when the connection returns. Anything stored only in OneDrive or SharePoint needs to be opened once while online first, so a file you plan to work on during a flight has to be prepared before takeoff.

5

What are the alternatives?

Google Sheets edits free at any screen size and collaborates more smoothly, at the cost of breaking complex formulas and formatting on import. Apple Numbers is free on iPhone and pleasant for simple sheets. For a file that must stay identical to its desktop version, this one is the safe choice.
