Claude vs ChatGPT: Which AI Assistant to Use on a Phone

Gemini for an Android phone where Google already holds the calendar and mail, and for anyone who wants an assistant that sells nothing inside the app; ChatGPT for the broadest free tier and the best photo understanding, with the data card read first. Both score 7.7 on our five criteria, and the tie is honest — 9.0 for ChatGPT's core function against Gemini's 8.5, 8.0 for Gemini's monetisation against ChatGPT's 6.5. What separates them on a phone is the commercial layer: ChatGPT's Play listing now says it contains advertising, Gemini's carries no purchases and no ads badge but collects thirteen data categories to run its briefings. Prices as of September 2026.
Both answer questions, generate images, hold a spoken conversation and understand what a camera shows. The free tiers cover all of that with caps that reset. The comparison is decided by what surrounds the answers, because on a phone the surroundings are the product.
Neither free tier blocks a feature. ChatGPT answers, reads photos, generates images and runs voice mode on a free account, with usage caps. Gemini answers, generates images and short video, runs camera questions and schedules tasks on a free account, with caps that most people never reach.
What differs is the ladder above. ChatGPT sells four tiers inside the app — Go at $8 a month, Plus at $19.99, and two Pro tiers at $100 and $200 — plus one-off usage credit packs at $4 for 100, $20 for 500 and $40 for 1,000, for anyone who exceeds a plan without upgrading it. Gemini's listing carries no in-app purchase entry at all: paid limits are bought through Google One, at $4.99 for AI Plus with double the free limits, $19.99 for AI Pro with four times, and $99.99 or $199.99 for AI Ultra, per Google's US plan page. The subscriptions raise limits and unlock better models rather than adding features you can point at.
The middle tiers are almost identical — $19.99 on both sides. The difference is where you pay, and whether the app is trying to sell to you — which is why Gemini's monetisation mark is 8.0 to ChatGPT's 6.5.
Hardware is not a constraint on either side. Both do their work on servers, both install at a moderate size on Android — ChatGPT at 87 MB, Gemini at 5 MB before its components download — and both require a recent iOS release on iPhone, which is the only barrier worth noting. Gemini's Android build is updated roughly monthly; ChatGPT's prices change more often than most subscriptions, so check the listing before assuming a figure from a month ago still holds.
The two apps make opposite trades, and both are written on their store listings.
ChatGPT's Google Play card counts five collected categories with device identifiers shared onward, and the listing now carries a Contains ads badge. Apple's privacy card goes further: collected data — including location, contacts, search history, user content and usage — may be used for third-party advertising as well as for analytics and personalisation. That is a short list of categories put to a broad use.
Gemini's card lists thirteen collected categories, including location and personal information — the longest of any assistant in our catalogue — but declares no third-party sharing at all. The length has a reason: to write a morning briefing it reads calendar entries, reminders and mail. That is a long list of categories kept in one place.
Both score 5.0 for privacy, and the tie is deliberate. One collects less and sends it further; the other collects more and keeps it. Which is worse depends on whether you already trust Google with your calendar.
Photo understanding. Send a picture of a plant, a receipt or a screenshot and it answers about what is in it — the feature that surprises people, and the reason for the 9.0 on core function.
Voice. A spoken conversation with named voices and a picker for language and response speed, good enough to replace typing.
Structure. Longer answers arrive with headings and numbered steps, which is why people use it for training plans and how-to questions rather than short facts.
Reach. A billion Android installs and 4.8 across 55.8 million Play reviews, the higher rating of the two.
Flexibility at the top. Usage credits let a heavy week be paid for without changing plan; Gemini has no equivalent.
Nothing sold in the app. No purchase entry, no advertising badge — the cleanest listing among the big assistants.
The camera, live. Point it at something and ask; the video feed is live rather than a still photo, so the answer is about what is actually in frame now.
Scheduled tasks. A request becomes a standing job — a digest of job listings at nine every morning — described in plain language and shown as an instruction card. ChatGPT answers when asked; Gemini can be asked once.
Integration. On an Android phone it is already where the calendar, reminders and mail are, and the briefing is built from them.
No third-party sharing. Thirteen categories collected, none declared shared onward.
The cost of the integration is the one thing to weigh: the briefing works precisely because it reads your day, and the install is heavier than rivals, with generation tasks that take noticeably longer than text — a 7.5 for performance against ChatGPT's 8.0.
Gemini, on an Android phone, and for anyone who wants an assistant that never tries to sell them anything — it does nearly everything ChatGPT does, adds the live camera and scheduled tasks, and keeps what it collects. ChatGPT, if photo understanding and voice are what you will actually use, or if you want to pay for a heavy week without a subscription. The tie on our scores is real. Pick by the trade you can live with: a short data list used for advertising, or a long one that stays with Google.
They tie at 7.7 on our scores. ChatGPT scores higher on what it does — photo understanding, voice, structured answers. Gemini scores higher on how it is sold — nothing bought in the app, no advertising badge — and adds live camera questions and scheduled tasks.
