Bloons TD 6 Review: $6.99, No Adverts, 4.9 on Apple

Paid Once, and It Shows Everywhere

$6.99 on both stores, no advertising badge, no life counter and no timer between attempts. That single decision changes how the whole game feels: a lost run costs time rather than a resource, so a hard map is a puzzle to be re-attempted instead of a wall to be paid through. The purchases that do exist — monkey money at $1.99, knowledge points at $0.99, a tower unlock at $4.99 — buy progression that ordinary play delivers on its own. Nothing in the game withholds content until a wallet appears, which in this catalogue makes it the exception.

Three Upgrade Paths, and You Cannot Have All Three

Every monkey has three upgrade branches and can only develop two of them meaningfully, so each tower is a trade-off rather than a straight line to a maximum. Heroes level automatically as a round progresses and change how a map is played from the first wave. Around that sit boss events against specific inflated targets, adventures that group maps into islands with their own rules, and difficulty tiers stacked on top of each map. The result is a tower defence with real decisions in it: which paths, in which order, against which rounds.

Four-Player Co-op and Player-Made Content

Four players can defend the same map at once, each holding a section, which almost nothing else on a phone offers. Apple rates the game 9+ and lists user-generated content among the contents — custom challenges built and shared by other players, which is where the game goes after the official maps run out. The install is 248.5 MB, the most recent update landed on 20 August 2026, and the ratings are the best in this catalogue: 4.9 stars from 346,000 App Store ratings and 4.8 from 401,000 Google Play reviews.

Pros

  • No advertising, no lives and no energy timers
  • Three upgrade paths per monkey force real trade-offs
  • Four players can defend one map together
  • Custom challenges built and shared by players
  • Rated 4.9 on the App Store across 346,000 ratings

Cons

  • Costs $6.99 before you can play at all
  • Purchases still exist on top of the price
  • Dense towers and menus crowd a phone screen
  • Later difficulties assume considerable prior knowledge

Verdict

The best value in this catalogue: $6.99 once, then a deep tower defence with no adverts, no energy and no content behind a paywall. Three upgrade paths per monkey give it more strategic weight than most paid games on any platform, and four-player co-op is genuinely rare here. The compromises are a crowded phone screen and a difficulty curve that expects you to learn it.

Gameplay9.0Genuine strategic depth: path choices, heroes and rounds that punish sloppy builds.
Controls7.0Precise tower placement on a small screen is the one real compromise.
Replay value9.0Dozens of maps, difficulty tiers, boss events and player-made challenges.
Graphics & sound8.0Bright and chaotic, and still readable when the screen is full of projectiles.
Monetisation8.5Paid once with no adverts; the purchases only shorten earnable progress.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can it be played offline?

Yes. Single-player maps, difficulties and progression all work without a connection, which is unusual for a modern mobile game. Co-op, boss events and shared challenges need the internet, and progress syncs to the account when it returns.

2

What is sold on top of the $6.99?

Monkey money at $1.99, knowledge points at $0.99 and $7.99, a full tower unlock at $4.99 and insta-monkey packs from $3.99. All of it accelerates things the game gives out for playing, so none of it is needed and none of it unlocks maps or modes.

3

What does it need to run?

248.5 MB and iOS 15 or later. Late rounds put dozens of towers and hundreds of projectiles on screen at once, which is where an older phone starts to slow down — the demand is on the processor rather than on storage.

4

How does co-op work?

Up to four players share one map, each responsible for part of the track, with a shared cash pool and separate towers. It is the strongest social feature of any game in this catalogue, and it works with strangers as well as with a private lobby.

5

How long is a game?

A standard map runs a substantial stretch of rounds, and harder modes run considerably longer — this is not a game for a two-minute gap. Runs can be paused and resumed, and single-player progress is saved locally, which makes long sessions practical on a phone.
