About Amazon Prime Video

Prime Video comes with an Amazon Prime membership rather than being sold on its own, which is why it sits on so many phones. It carries Amazon's originals, films to rent or buy, live sport and downloads that work offline. What changed in 2026 is the ad-free option: it became Prime Video Ultra at $4.99 a month, and 4K streaming moved behind it.

Prime Video Review: 4K Now Costs $4.99 Extra

Ultra Replaced the Ad-Free Add-On in April 2026

Watching without advertising used to cost $2.99 a month on top of Prime. On 10 April 2026 that upgrade became Prime Video Ultra at $4.99 monthly or $45.99 a year, and it now also gates 4K streaming, five simultaneous streams and up to 100 downloads, against 25 before. Prime itself remains $14.99 a month or $139 a year, and a standalone Prime Video subscription is $8.99. Ad-free 4K on a Prime membership therefore costs $19.98 a month in total. Anyone who subscribed before April 2026 was moved onto the new pricing rather than keeping the old rate.

Downloads Show Their Size Before You Store Them

The downloads tab is the most practical part of the app: each stored episode lists its size — 266 MB for one, 264 MB for another — with a running total for the phone, in the store example five videos taking 1.2 GB. Auto Downloads keeps the next episodes of a followed series ready without asking. For anyone managing a phone that is always full, seeing megabytes per episode before committing is more useful than it sounds, and rivals mostly hide it. Downloads also expire on a schedule set per title, so a series stored for a long trip may need refreshing before departure.

Rentals, Channels and Seven Data Categories

Beyond the included catalogue, the app sells films to rent or buy and subscriptions to third-party channels, all billed through Amazon — which is why the Play listing shows in-app purchases alongside a Contains ads badge. Google Play records seven collected categories with location, personal information and four others shared with third parties. Store ratings are strong on both platforms: 4.8 on the App Store from 3 million ratings and 4.7 across 5.61 million Play reviews. For an app tied to a shopping account, that sharing list is the part worth reading before adding a payment method.

Pros

  • Included with an Amazon Prime membership at no extra cost
  • Downloads list their size per episode before storing
  • Auto Downloads keeps the next episodes ready offline
  • Rentals and channel subscriptions billed through one account
  • Rated 4.8 on the App Store across 3 million ratings

Cons

  • Ad-free viewing rose to $4.99 a month in April 2026
  • 4K streaming now requires the Ultra upgrade
  • Seven data categories, six shared with third parties
  • Rented films sit alongside included ones in search results

Verdict

Good value while you are paying for Prime anyway, and the download handling — sizes shown per episode, automatic queuing of the next ones — is the best in this category. The 2026 change is what to weigh: removing advertising now costs $4.99 rather than $2.99, and 4K went with it, so watching in the quality you had last year is more expensive this year.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is Prime Video free?

Not on its own. It is included with an Amazon Prime membership at $14.99 a month or $139 a year, or sold separately at $8.99 a month. Both carry advertising unless you add Prime Video Ultra, which costs a further $4.99 monthly.

2

What is Prime Video Ultra?

The renamed ad-free tier, introduced on 10 April 2026 at $4.99 a month or $45.99 a year. It removes advertising and adds 4K streaming, five simultaneous streams and up to 100 downloads. Before the change, ad-free cost $2.99 and 4K was included in the base tier.

3

What does it cost to watch in 4K without ads?

On a Prime membership, $19.98 a month in total: $14.99 for Prime plus $4.99 for Ultra. On a standalone Prime Video subscription it is $13.98. Annual billing lowers both, with Ultra at $45.99 a year and Prime at $139.

4

How do downloads work?

Each title downloads with its size shown per episode, and the downloads tab keeps a running total of storage used. Auto Downloads fetches the next episodes of a series you are watching. The base tier allows 25 downloads; Ultra raises that to 100.

5

What are the alternatives?

Netflix has the deeper original catalogue and includes games. HBO Max carries stronger drama for a similar price. This one makes sense mainly if you already pay for Prime delivery, in which case the video is effectively a bonus rather than a purchase.
