About Netflix

Netflix on a phone is no longer only television: alongside the films and series sit mobile games included with the subscription — Red Dead Redemption and Bloons TD 6 among them — plus video podcasts and a clips feed. Downloads work for offline viewing. Nothing is bought inside the app, because subscriptions are sold on Netflix's own site, where US prices now start at $8.99 with advertising.

Netflix Review: Games and Podcasts Come With It

The Subscription Includes Games and Podcasts

The home screen carries filter chips for Shows, Movies, Podcasts and New & Hot, and a Mobile Games row that installs full titles at no extra cost — the store screenshots list Red Dead Redemption, Football Manager 26 Mobile, Netflix Puzzled and Bloons TD 6, a game that costs money on its own elsewhere. Video podcasts sit in the same app. None of it is upsold: everything visible is part of whatever plan you already pay for, which is unusual in a category built on add-ons. Everything installs from inside the app rather than sending you to a store page, so a game is playable a minute after seeing it.

US Prices Rose Again in March 2026

The app itself sells nothing — the Play listing shows no in-app purchases at all, because Netflix stopped billing through app stores years ago. Subscriptions are bought on its website, and after the March 2026 increase the US tiers are reported at $8.99 a month for Standard with ads, $19.99 for Standard and $26.99 for Premium with 4K and four streams. That is the second rise in under two years. Prices vary by country, and the ad-supported tier is the only one under ten dollars. Because billing happens on the website, cancelling also happens there, which catches out people expecting an in-app switch.

Downloads, Ratings and a 4.2 Android Score

Practical details matter more here than features. Episodes download for offline viewing from the title page, a thumbs system — not for me, I like this, love this — feeds the recommendations, and My Netflix collects saved moments and a watchlist in one tab. Google Play lists five collected categories with no third-party sharing declared and no advertising badge. The ratings diverge: 4.7 on the App Store against 4.2 from 15.8 million Play reviews, where complaints centre on price rises rather than the app. Google Play counts more than a billion installs, so the low Android score reflects a very large and very vocal sample.

Pros

  • Mobile games are included with the subscription
  • Video podcasts sit in the same app as the shows
  • Episodes download to the phone for offline viewing
  • No in-app purchases or upsells inside the app
  • Five collected data categories, none shared onward

Cons

  • US prices rose again in March 2026
  • The cheapest tier carries advertising throughout
  • Subscriptions must be bought on the website
  • Android rating of 4.2 across 15.8 million reviews

Verdict

Still the most complete streaming app, and the games and podcasts are genuine extras rather than a marketing line — a subscription now covers things other services charge for separately. The problem is the direction of the price: after March 2026, watching without advertising costs $19.99 a month in the US. If the ad tier is acceptable, this remains good value; if not, the maths has changed.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is there a free version of Netflix?

No. The app downloads free and shows a sign-in screen; watching requires a subscription bought on Netflix's website. The cheapest US tier is Standard with ads at a reported $8.99 a month, and the app itself has no in-app purchases at all.

2

Are the mobile games really included?

Yes. The Mobile Games row installs full titles at no extra charge for subscribers, including Red Dead Redemption, Football Manager 26 Mobile and Bloons TD 6 — the last of which is a paid game when bought separately. They install as normal apps and require the Netflix login.

3

How much does Netflix cost per month?

After the March 2026 US increase, reported prices are $8.99 for Standard with ads, $19.99 for Standard and $26.99 for Premium with 4K and four simultaneous streams. Prices differ by country and are set on Netflix's site rather than in the app.

4

Can you watch without a connection?

Yes — most titles carry a download button on their detail page, and downloads play with the phone offline. Availability varies by title because it depends on the licence, and downloads expire after a period set per title, so a flight is fine but a month-long trip is not.

5

What are the alternatives?

HBO Max has the stronger prestige catalogue and a cheaper ad tier. Disney+ suits households with children. Prime Video comes bundled with a Prime membership. None of them include mobile games, which is the one thing this subscription adds that the others do not.
