About Apple Music

Apple's streaming service offers more than 100 million songs, lossless audio across the catalog with Hi-Res tracks up to 24-bit/192 kHz, Dolby Atmos mixes and the Classical companion app at no extra cost, with no ads on any plan. The Android app now gets lyric translations and Playlist Playground, but not AutoMix or Sing. The catch: there is no free on-demand tier, and since July 2026 Individual costs $11.99 a month.

Apple Music Review: Lossless for $11.99, but Android Gets the Short Straw

No Free Tier: What $11.99, $19.99 and $6.99 a Month Buy

The app costs nothing to install, but on-demand listening needs a paid plan; there is no ad-supported tier. In the US, Individual is $11.99 a month, Family is $19.99 for up to six people with separate libraries and recommendations, and Student is $6.99 for verified college students, with Apple TV included and student pricing for up to four years. Apple One bundles the service with iCloud+, Apple TV and Apple Arcade from $21.95, rising to $39.95 for Premier with 2 TB of storage, Fitness+ and News+. New subscribers get one month free. The three-month offer for buyers of an eligible new audio device has to be redeemed by pairing it with an iPhone or iPad, so an Android-only household gets the single month. Without paying, Apple lists six live radio stations, from Hits to Chill. Prices are US rates and can change.

Lossless Up to 24-bit/192 kHz on Android: The Wired Fine Print

On Android, lossless sits under More, Settings, Audio Quality in the latest app, with separate choices for streaming and downloads. Apple calls files up to 48 kHz Lossless and anything from 48 to 192 kHz Hi-Res Lossless. The catch on a phone: Apple's support page lists only wired headphones, receivers or powered speakers for Android, and warns that sample rates above 48 kHz may need an external USB digital-to-analog converter. Bluetooth connections are not lossless, so most earbuds never hear the difference. Dolby Atmos works only if your handset maker supports the format. Lossless downloads also take far more storage, and songs saved earlier must be deleted and downloaded again to get the lossless version. One September 2026 Play reviewer reports lossless playback buffering even on a 1 Gbps wired connection.

AutoMix, Sing and Playlist Playground: What Android Gets and Misses

A September 2025 update to the Android app, reported by AppleInsider, added lyric translation and pronunciation, pinned songs and monthly Replay stats. Playlist Playground, which builds a playlist from a text prompt, also runs on the latest Android release, though Apple still labels it a beta for US English only. Three headline features stay on Apple hardware. AutoMix, the beat-matched DJ-style transition between songs, needs iOS 26, macOS 26 or CarPlay. Sing, the karaoke mode with adjustable vocals, needs an iPhone 11 or later, an iPad or an Apple TV 4K. Music Haptics is iPhone-only. Android has its own extras in Chromecast and Android Auto support, and the Classical companion app runs on Android 6 or later. Play reviewers also point to missing playlist folders and no Play Last option in the queue.

July 2026 Price Rise, Cancel Rules and a Shaky Android Build

In July 2026 Apple raised US prices for the first time since 2022, citing licensing costs: Individual went from $10.99 to $11.99 and Family from $16.99 to $19.99. That still leaves Individual $1 below Spotify Premium at $12.99, and Family $2 under Spotify's $21.99. Leaving costs more than it looks: when a subscription ends, every song added or downloaded from the catalog disappears from your library, along with playlists built from it; only iTunes purchases stay. On Android, the most-upvoted Play review, with nearly 6,000 helpful votes, says downloaded songs freeze while buffering, and September 2026 reviews describe crashes, sign-in screens that spin without end and Play Next queuing the wrong track. On privacy, Google Play's form lists no data shared with third parties, while purchase history and device IDs feed Apple's own marketing.

Pros

  • No ads on any plan, and Individual costs $1 less than Spotify
  • Lossless across the catalog, with Hi-Res tracks up to 24-bit/192 kHz
  • Family plan covers six people with separate libraries for $19.99
  • Student plan at $6.99 includes Apple TV access at no extra cost
  • Classical companion app included in every plan, running on Android 6 or later
  • Google Play's Data safety form lists no data shared with third parties

Cons

  • No free on-demand tier, and Android-only users get just a one-month trial
  • AutoMix, Sing and Music Haptics are missing from the Android app
  • September 2026 Play reviews report crashes, sign-in loops and Play Next bugs
  • Canceling removes every catalog song and playlist from your library

Verdict

We score it 7.7. Lossless audio across a 100 million-song catalog, no ads, the bundled Classical app and prices $1 to $2 under Spotify earn the points; the missing free tier, a July 2026 price rise and a buggy Android build take them away. Take it if you own Apple devices, listen through wired headphones or a DAC, or want lossless and no ads for less than Spotify charges. Skip it if you listen on Android over Bluetooth, want a free tier, or need a queue that behaves every time.

Core function9.0More than 100 million songs, lossless across the catalog, Dolby Atmos and the Classical app in every plan.
Ease of use7.0Reviewers cite Play Next adding the wrong song, no playlist folders and sign-in screens that hang on Android.
Monetisation7.5No ads, $1 under Spotify; but no free tier, a July 2026 price rise and a three-month offer needing iPhone or iPad.
Performance6.0The top Play review, with nearly 6,000 votes, reports downloads freezing; September 2026 reviews describe crashes on Android.
Privacy & permissions8.0No third-party sharing on Google Play and no tracking on Apple's label; purchase history still feeds Apple's own marketing.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is Apple Music free on Android?

No. The Android app is free to download, but playing songs on demand needs a paid plan, and there is no ad-supported tier. New subscribers get one month free, then Individual costs $11.99 a month in the US. Apple's three-month offer for new audio devices must be redeemed through an iPhone or iPad, so it does not help Android-only users. Prices vary by region.

2

Does Apple Music lossless work on Android?

Yes, with conditions. Turn it on under More, Settings, Audio Quality in the latest app. Apple lists only wired headphones, receivers or powered speakers for Android, because Bluetooth is not lossless, and Hi-Res tracks above 48 kHz may need an external USB DAC. Dolby Atmos plays only if your phone's maker supports the format.

3

How much is Apple Music a month?

In the US, Individual is $11.99, Family is $19.99 for up to six people, and Student is $6.99 with Apple TV access included. Apple One bundles that include the service cost $21.95 for Individual, $27.95 for Family and $39.95 for Premier. These are current US prices; they differ by region and can change.

4

How do I cancel Apple Music on Android?

It depends on who bills you. If the subscription runs through Google Play, cancel it in the Google Play app; if Apple bills you, sign in at account.apple.com and cancel there. Do it at least 24 hours before renewal. Once the plan ends, songs and playlists added from the catalog leave your library, while iTunes purchases stay.

5

Is Apple Music better than Spotify?

On price, yes; on free access, no. Apple's Individual plan is $11.99 against Spotify Premium's $12.99, and Apple Family is $19.99 against $21.99. Spotify keeps a free ad-supported tier and adds 15 hours of audiobooks a month to Premium. Amazon Music Unlimited costs $11.99 for Prime members and $12.99 without Prime.
