FL Studio Mobile Review: $14.99 and It Exports .flp

Sequencer, Piano Roll and Mixer on One Screen

The step sequencer holds kicks, snares, hi-hats and percussion as rows with per-channel level and pan sliders and a swing control above them. The piano roll draws notes against a vertical keyboard with a scale selector along the bottom, so a chord progression can be locked to a key rather than guessed at. Automation is drawn as points on a curve, audio recordings appear as editable waveforms with volume, pan and speed lanes, and the transport keeps tempo, CPU and memory readouts visible while a track plays. It is a desktop layout, shrunk rather than simplified.

It Speaks to the Desktop Version

Projects save as .flp files that open in the desktop application through its free plugin version — the single strongest reason to choose this over any other mobile studio if the rest of your work already happens in FL Studio. Exports cover WAV, MP3, AAC, FLAC and MIDI, so a phone sketch can leave as a stem set rather than as a bounced mix. The instrument list runs to a groove machine synth, a bass synth, a mini synth, a supersaw, a sample player and a SoundFont player, with reverb, distortion, compression, limiting, flanger, chorus, EQ and auto-pitch as effects.

$14.99, With Packs From $0.99

The app is a single $14.99 purchase with no subscription; additional sound packs — tuned 808 bass, acoustic guitars, synth leads, an orchestral collection — cost $0.99 to $3.99 each and are optional. The install is 426.8 MB, the age rating 4+, and it is sold separately on Android as its own paid app. The App Store average is 3.8 from 595 ratings, the smallest sample in this catalogue, which says as much about how few people attempt a full studio on a phone as it does about the software.

Verdict

A serious mobile studio rather than a toy: sequencing, piano roll, automation, audio recording and export formats a professional would expect, bought once for $14.99. The .flp path to the desktop version is the reason to pick it over anything else. The screen is the limitation — this is where ideas get captured and sketched, not where a mix gets finished.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is there a free version?

No. The app is a $14.99 purchase with no free tier or trial on the App Store. There is no subscription afterwards, and the only further spending is on optional sound packs priced between $0.99 and $3.99.

2

Can projects move to a computer?

Yes. Projects save as .flp files that open in the desktop version through its free plugin, and audio can be exported as WAV, MP3, AAC, FLAC or MIDI. That two-way path is the main argument for this app over its mobile competitors.

3

What do the sound packs cost?

Between $0.99 and $3.99 each, covering things like tuned 808 bass, acoustic guitars, synth leads and an orchestral collection. None are required — the included synthesisers, drum kits and sample player cover a full track without any additional purchase.

4

Is a phone screen big enough for this?

Barely, and that is the honest answer. The piano roll and mixer work, but the controls are small and precise editing is slow compared with a tablet or a computer. It suits capturing ideas and building sketches more than finishing a mix.

5

What are the alternatives?

GarageBand is free on iPhone and far friendlier, with a smaller ceiling. Koala Sampler costs less and does sampling brilliantly and nothing else. This one is the choice specifically for people whose desktop projects live in FL Studio and need to travel.
