About BandLab – Music Maker & Beats

BandLab is a cloud-based mobile studio that records up to 16 audio and MIDI tracks per project, then adds a sampler, vocal tuning, stem splitting and mastering on top. The core app is free, but it shows ads, caps projects at 16 tracks and 15 minutes, and keeps AI tools, extra effects and music distribution behind a Membership that starts at $14.99 a month in the US. Everything saves online, so it needs a connection.

BandLab Review: Free to Record, Paid to Polish and Release

The free Studio: 16 tracks, 15 minutes and the ads that pay for it

A free account opens the full Studio, with up to 16 audio and MIDI tracks in a project that can run 15 minutes. Membership doubles the track count to 32 but leaves the 15-minute ceiling alone, so a longer piece has to be split across projects. The free toolbox is wider than the cap suggests: Drum Machine, Looper, Sampler, AutoPitch with 6 effects, a Splitter, and mastering with 4 presets called Universal, Fire, Clarity and Tape. Ads are the price. Google Play flags them, the App Store lists Advertising among the contents, and the Membership FAQ names an ad-free experience as a perk. For comparison, GarageBand on iPhone is free and allows up to 32 tracks.

Splitter: 4 free stems, up to 7 with Membership

Splitter takes a finished song and separates it into stems. The free version returns vocals, drums, bass and an others track, enough for a karaoke backing or a drumless practice loop. Membership adds lead and backing vocals as separate stems, individual drum stems, and guitar, piano and strings, for up to 7 stems in total, plus MIDI conversion and faster processing. The help center warns that quality depends on the source file, so a clean, high-quality upload gives the best split. Stems can be soloed, muted, looped and downloaded on the Splitter page, or opened in the Studio. On mobile it sits under the Create button; inside a project you reach it from a region.

$14.99 a month, 100 claims a week and what ends with the plan

Membership costs $14.99 a month with a 3-day trial, or $99 for the first year and $149 a year after that. These are US prices; check the current price in the app, since it varies by region. Pro adds 100 Sounds claims and 10 Beats claims a week, 8 mastering presets, 24 AutoPitch effects, Voice Cleaner and AutoMix. The part a store page skips is the exit. Distribution to more than 20 streaming services needs an active plan, releases are eventually pulled if it lapses, and the 100% royalty share falls to 80%. Refunds cover only duplicated or mistaken charges, and deleting the account does not cancel the plan. On Android, AI video runs on separate Tokens: 15 free each month, against 320 for one 16-second clip.

Pros

  • Free tier allows 16 audio and MIDI tracks, with Drum Machine, Looper and Sampler
  • Splitter gives 4 free stems; members get up to 7, including guitar and piano
  • Mastering offers 4 free presets: Universal, Fire, Clarity and Tape
  • Mobile projects reopen on the web version, and web projects open on mobile
  • The web Studio exports stems as WAV or M4A, ready for another DAW
  • Distribution reaches more than 20 services while Membership keeps 100% of earnings

Cons

  • Free version shows ads, and an ad-free experience is a Membership perk
  • Cloud-only: new projects open offline, but saving and publishing need internet
  • Projects stop at 16 tracks and 15 minutes; Membership lifts only the track count
  • Distributed releases are eventually pulled if Membership lapses, and the royalty share falls to 80%

Verdict

The score rewards a capable free studio and docks it for ads, a 16-track cap and a monthly plan that gates the best tools. Take it if you record vocals or build beats on Android or across phone and browser, or want a low-cost route to streaming release. Skip it if you dislike ads, work offline for long stretches, or prefer a one-time purchase, where FL Studio Mobile at $14.99 fits better.

Core function8.5Recording, Splitter, AutoPitch and mastering cover a full path to release, though 16 tracks is half of GarageBand's limit.
Ease of use8.0Studio, Splitter and SongStarter sit under one Create tab and projects reopen on the web; input-device choice exists only on iOS.
Monetisation6.0Ads, a 16-track cap and a $14.99 monthly plan, while one 16-second AI video costs 320 Tokens against 15 free monthly.
Performance6.5Saving needs internet, Android offers Audio Safe Mode for driver conflicts, and some Infinix, Itel and Tecno phones may fail to install.
Privacy & permissions6.0The App Store label lists identifiers used for tracking, and contacts, photos or videos and audio data linked to your identity.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is BandLab really free?

Yes for the core Studio, with limits. A free account records up to 16 audio and MIDI tracks per project of up to 15 minutes, and includes Drum Machine, Sampler, Looper, 6 AutoPitch effects, 4 mastering presets and Splitter. It also shows ads. Membership removes the ads, raises the cap to 32 tracks and unlocks distribution and the AI tools.

2

Can BandLab remove vocals from a song?

Yes. Splitter separates a song into vocals, drums, bass and others for free, so you can mute the vocal for a karaoke version. Members get up to 7 stems, with lead and backing vocals apart. Results depend on the source file, so upload a clean, high-quality track. Stems can be looped, downloaded or sent to the Studio.

3

How much does BandLab Membership cost, and is it worth it?

Pro is $14.99 a month with a 3-day trial, or $99 for the first year and $149 after. Max is $199, then $299 a year, and adds Mastering EQ, Reference Mastering and unlimited Beats claims. Prices are US and vary by region. It pays off mainly if you want distribution, since a release needs an active plan to stay live.

4

Does BandLab work offline?

Only partly. You can start a new project without a connection, but saving, publishing and downloading instruments and sounds need internet, because projects live in the cloud. Finished work downloads as a mixdown, and the web Studio exports tracks as WAV or M4A stems. After cancelling, Membership perks last until the billing period ends.

5

Is BandLab better than GarageBand or FL Studio Mobile?

BandLab is better for Android, phone-to-browser work and releasing music, but not for a one-time price. GarageBand is Apple-only and allows up to 32 tracks on iPhone. FL Studio Mobile costs $14.99 once with no subscription, which suits anyone put off by ads and monthly fees.
