About CNN: Live & Breaking News

CNN's official app combines a Top Stories feed, a vertical Shorts tab, Magic Wall election maps and live audio from four networks. Beyond articles, it bundles live TV, but streaming past a five-minute preview needs a participating pay TV login or the $6.99-a-month All Access plan. The main limitation is the article meter: unlimited reading starts with the $3.99 Basic plan, and both paid tiers still show ads.

CNN App Review: Live TV Behind a Login, Articles Behind a Meter

Five-Minute Preview: What Live CNN Needs From a TV Provider or All Access

Live television runs as a five-minute preview until you sign in. A login from a participating pay TV provider unlocks the CNN, CNN International and HLN streams plus original series at no extra cost. Cord-cutters need All Access instead, which carries a live channel of CNN U.S. programming with select international shows, two FAST channels and CNN International bureau coverage on weekdays from 9am to 5pm ET; CNN's own plan terms warn that this video may vary from CNN TV. Short clips play with no login at all. Reviewers from July to September 2026 described the provider sign-in failing on Android and Fire TV, and streams snapping back to International or Headlines.

Basic at $3.99, All Access at $6.99: Where the Article Paywall Starts

Readers without a plan get a limited number of free articles each month, and stories marked subscriber-only lock on the first tap; a free account adds topic following and select free articles. Basic, launched in October 2024, costs $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year for unlimited articles but includes no streaming. All Access costs $6.99 a month or $69.99 a year and bundles articles with video. Both plans are US-only, prices may change, and a pay TV login does not cover unlimited reading. Of the 150 newest English Google Play reviews, posted June 23 to October 1, 2026, 70 give one or two stars, and more than 30 of those blame subscription prompts.

Magic Wall, Shorts and Live Audio: What Sits Beyond the Headlines

Magic Wall, the interactive map from election-night broadcasts, shows county-by-county results that can be set against past elections; a four-star reviewer in August 2026 found some races missing, such as Alabama primaries and certain runoffs. In November 2025 the home screen gained a Shorts tab, a vertical feed beside Top Stories that, per Nieman Lab, mixes every recent vertical clip with videos made only for the stream. Live audio covers CNN, CNN en Español, CNN International and HLN, and the 1 Thing podcast takes on the week's most-discussed story. A Your CNN page keeps saved stories next to recommendations drawn from viewing history.

Alerts, Ads and Tracking: What the Google Play and Apple Labels Disclose

Custom alerts can follow a developing story, but in July and August 2026 reviewers said taps often landed on a paywall, and one reported 30 seconds of logo screen before an article opened. Ads stay on both paid tiers, since CNN's plan cards promise fewer ads rather than none. Apple's privacy label lists location, browsing history, identifiers and usage data as used to track you across other companies' apps, and Google Play's Data safety section says approximate location, app interactions and device IDs are shared for advertising. The Warner Bros. Discovery privacy policy, updated July 9, 2025, says usage data may include recorded clicks, keystrokes and scrolling, and opting out through Ad Choices leaves ads in place.

Pros

  • Magic Wall maps compare county-by-county results with past elections
  • Live audio streams CNN, CNN en Español, CNN International and HLN
  • Participating pay TV logins unlock live channels at no added cost
  • Shorts tab adds a vertical video feed beside Top Stories
  • 22 iOS releases so far in 2026, roughly one every two weeks

Cons

  • Monthly article limit for free readers; alerts often open onto a paywall
  • Paid subscribers still see ads: both plans promise only fewer ads
  • Live TV beyond five minutes needs a provider login or $6.99 All Access
  • Apple's label lists location, browsing history and identifiers used for cross-app tracking

Verdict

CNN earns 6.1 for putting live audio from four networks, Magic Wall maps and a Shorts feed into one free download, held back by an article meter that limits free reading, live TV that needs a login past five minutes, and ads on both paid tiers. Take it if your pay TV package includes CNN, since that login unlocks live channels at no extra cost, or if you follow elections county by county. Skip it if you want free unlimited reading or an ad-free paid plan.

Core function7.0Headlines, Magic Wall, Shorts and live audio cover breaking news well, but live TV stops after five minutes without a login.
Ease of use6.5The Top Stories and Shorts tabs are clear; reviewers report failed provider sign-ins and streams switching to International.
Monetisation5.0Basic at $3.99 and All Access at $6.99 monthly still carry ads, and pay TV logins exclude unlimited articles.
Performance6.5Updates ship every two weeks, yet 2026 reviews cite freezes, slow launches and alerts stuck on a logo screen.
Privacy & permissions5.0Location, identifiers and browsing history feed third-party advertising, and opting out of targeted ads leaves ads running.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is the CNN app free to read?

Partly. The download, headlines and short video clips cost nothing, but readers without a plan get a limited number of free articles a month, and subscriber-only stories stay locked. A free CNN account adds topic following and select free articles. Unlimited reading starts with Basic at $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year, US prices that may change.

2

Can I watch CNN live in the app with my cable login?

Yes, if your pay TV provider participates: signing in unlocks live streams and original series at no extra cost, though unlimited articles still need Basic. Without a login you get a five-minute preview. Reviewers in July and August 2026 said the provider sign-in did nothing on Android and Fire TV, and the developer answered with a support form.

3

What is the difference between CNN Basic and All Access?

Basic costs $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year for unlimited and subscriber-only articles, with no streaming. All Access costs $6.99 a month or $69.99 a year and adds a 24/7 live channel, FAST channels and an on-demand library of more than 1,000 hours. Both are US-only, list fewer ads rather than none, and prices may change.

4

How do I cancel a CNN subscription on Android?

If you subscribed in the app, cancel in Google Play under Payments & subscriptions at least 24 hours before renewal. Plans bought on cnn.com are cancelled in account Settings, and CNN's web terms call subscription fees non-refundable. To erase account data, file a request through the Warner Bros. Discovery Privacy Center or email wbdprivacy@wbd.com.

5

What are the best alternatives to the CNN app?

AP News, NBC News and Fox News cover the same breaking stories. AP News lists no in-app purchases on Google Play and publishes in English and Spanish. NBC News pairs alerts with 24/7 NBC News NOW streaming and sells its own subscription. Fox News also lists no in-app purchases and plays shows in picture-in-picture. All three carry the Contains ads badge.
