Best AI Search Apps on Mobile, Ranked
An AI search app should do one thing a chatbot does not: show where the answer came from. Of the five we rank, only one is built around that from the
Duck.ai is free inside the DuckDuckGo browser app: no account, six models that include Claude, GPT and Mistral, and a daily cap with no published number. Your IP address is removed before a prompt reaches the model company, and chats are saved only on your device by default. The catch is that the stronger models sit behind a subscription that also bundles a VPN, and the chat arrives inside a full browser.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-10-06. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
Chat, voice chat and image generation all work without an account, inside a daily limit. The free list has six models: Claude 4.5 Haiku, Mistral Small 4, GPT-5.4 nano, GPT-5.4 mini, gpt-oss-120b and Gemma 4 31B. The developer will not say how many prompts that buys, because each model draws on the limit at a different rate: Mistral Small 4, GPT-5.4 nano, gpt-oss-120b and Gemma 4 31B carry an extra-low limit cost, GPT-5.4 mini a low one and Claude 4.5 Haiku a medium one. A long chat on the Claude model therefore drains the allowance fastest. PDF uploads stop at 15 pages on the free plan, image uploads only work on some models, and spreadsheets are not supported.
The service removes your IP address before a prompt reaches OpenAI, Anthropic or Mistral, so every request looks like it came from one company rather than from you, and each provider agrees to delete prompts right after replying and never to train on them. Two models go further: gpt-oss-120b and Gemma 4 31B run inside a Trusted Execution Environment at Tinfoil, and the interface labels them "zero provider visibility". OpenAI and Anthropic may hold a chat in memory for up to an hour to speed up replies, never on disk. Besides your prompt, providers receive only the date, your timezone and a unit system guessed from region; the "Use Approximate Location" setting that adds a city is off by default.
The paid plans are a privacy bundle with AI inside. Plus costs $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year and adds GPT-5.6 Terra, Claude Sonnet 4.6, PDF uploads up to 35 pages and a weekly limit that extends a session once the daily one runs out, alongside a VPN, Personal Information Removal (US only) and Identity Theft Restoration. Pro costs $19.99 or $199.99 and adds Claude Opus 4.8, GPT-5.6 Sol, higher reasoning effort and double the Plus limits. The chat cannot be bought alone, and a plan covers one person. Pro's $19.99 matches ChatGPT Plus and Google AI Pro in US listings. Prices are regional and change.
The app you install is a full browser, not a chat app: at our October check, about 83 MB on Android 9 or later and 253 MB on iOS 15 or later. The chat also works in any browser at duck.ai. The start page in the store screenshots carries a Search and Duck.ai toggle, and Search Assist, an optional AI answer, can appear above ordinary results. The chat switches off under Settings > AI Features; Search Assist has its own Never option in search settings. The App Store privacy label lists contact info, usage data and diagnostics, none linked to you. The weak spot is recent Play reviews: several describe slow launches and a long wait for the keyboard, others object to startup prompts promoting the AI chat.

The score rewards the privacy engineering and a free tier that works without an account, and it docks the unpublished cap, a paid plan that is really a VPN bundle, and recent complaints about launch speed. Take it if you want a chat assistant that keeps your IP address away from OpenAI and Anthropic, or if you already use the DuckDuckGo browser. Skip it if you need a stated usage allowance, or file creation and connectors, which Claude offers.

Yes. The chat costs nothing and needs no account, whether you open it in the browser app or at duck.ai. The free plan covers six models, voice chat, image generation and PDF uploads of up to 15 pages, all inside a daily limit. The developer does not publish how many prompts that is, because each model uses up the limit at a different rate.
Six are free: Claude 4.5 Haiku, Mistral Small 4, GPT-5.4 nano, GPT-5.4 mini, gpt-oss-120b and Gemma 4 31B. Plus adds GPT-5.6 Terra and Claude Sonnet 4.6, and Pro adds Claude Opus 4.8 and GPT-5.6 Sol. You switch by tapping the model name in the chat bar. The lineup changes often, so check the picker in the app.
You do not need it for basic chat. In US listings Plus is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, and Pro is $19.99 or $199.99. Both bundle a VPN, and the chat cannot be bought alone. Plus adds stronger models and a weekly limit; Pro doubles the Plus limits and adds higher reasoning effort. It only makes sense if you also want the VPN.
Yes to both. In the browser app, open Settings > AI Features and switch Duck.ai off. Chat history lives on your device and can be disabled in the chat's own settings or wiped with the Fire Button inside it, though up to five pinned chats survive until you unpin them. For search with no AI at all, noai.duckduckgo.com turns Search Assist and the chat off.
Yes on one point: the model company never sees your IP address, only an anonymised request from DuckDuckGo, while with ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini you talk to the vendor directly. Chat history stays on your device, but voice chat still streams microphone audio to OpenAI while it runs. You give up vendor extras such as Claude's file creation and Gemini's scheduled tasks.
