Best AI Search Apps on Mobile, Ranked

Add ScoredApps as a preferred source on GooglePerplexity on top of a winners' podium, Brave second, DuckDuckGo third, Copilot and You.com in front — Best AI Search Apps on Mobile, Ranked

An AI search app should do one thing a chatbot does not: show where the answer came from. Of the five we rank, only one is built around that from the first screen, and it wins. The other four are good at different things — free and private, free with no account, or several models under one bill — and one of them stopped letting free users chat at all this August. Prices and limits below are as of October 2026, from each app's own pages.

How we picked

Five apps in our catalogue answer questions with AI rather than with a list of links: Perplexity, Brave, DuckDuckGo, Microsoft Copilot and You.com. We ranked them on what a search app has to get right — whether you can check the answer, what the free tier actually allows, and what happens to the question once you type it.

Our scores weigh price, limits, privacy and reliability, but the order below puts the job first. A browser with a capable assistant inside it is not the same product as an answer engine, and the ranking says which is which.

1. Perplexity — the answer engine, with the sources numbered

Perplexity is the only app here built as search first and chat second. Every reply arrives with numbered sources you can open, and its Pro Search mode asks a clarifying question before it goes looking, which is what a good researcher does and a chatbot rarely bothers with.

The free plan allows three Pro Searches a day; ordinary searches are not counted against that. Pro is $20 a month and adds a choice of eight models. The part to understand before paying is the Computer agent, which runs on separate credits that Pro does not renew monthly — the subscription and the agent are two different meters.

Our score is 7.5. It wins because the sources are not an option you switch on; they are the answer.

2. Brave — free AI search with nothing to sign up for

Brave is a browser that blocks ads and trackers by default and ships its own search engine, and Leo, its assistant, works with no account at all. That combination — private search plus an assistant you do not have to log in to — is why Brave carries the highest score in this list, 8.0.

The free tier has a usage cap that Brave describes only as depending on traffic, so you will not know where the wall is until you hit it. Leo Premium costs $14.99 a month. Brave also shows its own opt-out ads, and the mobile builds run no browser extensions.

3. DuckDuckGo — six models, and your IP address stays behind

Duck.ai sits inside the DuckDuckGo browser app: no account, six models including Claude, GPT and Mistral, and a daily cap with no published number. Its privacy design is the most concrete of the five — your IP address is removed before a prompt reaches the model company, and chats are saved only on your device by default.

The catch is that the stronger models sit behind a subscription that also bundles a VPN, and the chat arrives inside a full browser rather than a dedicated search app. Our score: 7.6.

4. Microsoft Copilot — free, capable, and capacity-dependent

Microsoft Copilot is free to install and chat with, with voice, file uploads, and camera questions for subscribers. Cowork, an agent that drafts email and builds Office files, is still in preview for personal accounts.

Two limits matter for search. Free use runs on available capacity, so busy hours can slow or cap you, and accounts without a Microsoft 365 subscription may see ads. Editing Word, Excel and PowerPoint files has moved to Microsoft's separate Office apps. Our score: 7.2.

5. You.com — no free chat since August 4

You.com changed the deal this summer: since August 4, 2026, only paid plans can chat. YouPro costs $19.99 a month in the App Store and gets you a multi-model assistant, a deep-research agent called ARI, an Auto mode that picks the tool for each question, and custom agents.

That is a reasonable package for someone who wants several AI providers under one bill. For anyone looking for free AI search, it is now the wrong app. Our score: 7.1, held up by the paid features rather than by access.

What the free tiers actually allow

The free tiers look alike in the store and differ a great deal in use. Perplexity is the only one that publishes a number: three Pro Searches a day, with ordinary searches outside that count. Brave and DuckDuckGo both cap free use without saying where — Brave ties it to traffic, DuckDuckGo to a daily limit it does not publish — so heavy users find the line by hitting it. Copilot's free tier depends on capacity, which in practice means it slows at busy hours rather than stopping. You.com has no free chat left.

That matters more than the model names. A search app is something you open twenty times a day for small questions, and an unpublished cap is fine for that. It is the occasional long research session that runs into the wall, and that is the case Perplexity's three deep searches are designed around.

The other difference is what an answer costs you in data. Perplexity and Copilot tie questions to an account; Brave and DuckDuckGo let you ask without one, and DuckDuckGo goes furthest by stripping your IP address before the question leaves for the model. If what you search for is nobody's business, that is the deciding line, not the score.

What we left out and why

ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude all search the web now, but they are chat assistants first, and our AI chat ranking covers them. Google's own search app is a search engine with AI summaries layered on top rather than an AI answer engine, and it sits in a different comparison.

How to choose between them

If you want to check every claim, take Perplexity. If you want AI search without an account or tracking, take Brave or DuckDuckGo — Brave for its own search index, DuckDuckGo for the IP stripping and model choice. If you live in Microsoft's apps already, Copilot is free and close at hand. Pay for You.com only if one bill for many models is the point — You.com's ARI research agent is the one feature here none of the others matches.

Bottom line

Perplexity is the best AI search app on a phone because the sources come with every answer, and three Pro Searches a day are enough for most people's hard questions. Brave and DuckDuckGo are the free, private alternatives, and both are better choices than paying for You.com, which no longer lets free users chat at all.

Frequently asked questions

1

What is the best free AI search app?

Perplexity, for the sources. Its free plan includes three Pro Searches a day, and every answer comes with numbered links you can open. If you would rather not make an account at all, Brave's Leo and DuckDuckGo's Duck.ai both work without one.

2

Is Perplexity better than ChatGPT for search?

For checking facts, yes. Perplexity is built as an answer engine and puts numbered sources on every reply, while ChatGPT is a chat assistant that can search when asked. For writing, brainstorming or long conversations, ChatGPT is the stronger app.

3

Which AI search app is the most private?

DuckDuckGo. Duck.ai removes your IP address before a prompt reaches the model company and keeps chats on your device by default, and it needs no account. Brave is the next closest: no account, with ads and trackers blocked.

4

Is You.com still free?

The app is free to download, but since August 4, 2026 chat is limited to paid plans. YouPro costs $19.99 a month in the App Store as of October 2026.
