Claude vs ChatGPT: Which AI Assistant to Use on a Phone

Claude is Anthropic's assistant app. Beyond answering questions it produces files you can download — a presentation, a document, a spreadsheet — connects to work tools such as Slack, Notion and Google Drive, and keeps longer jobs running in the background with a notification when they finish. It is the smallest of the major assistant apps and the only one Apple rates 18+.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-09-07. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
Ask for a deck introducing your dog to a new sitter, attach a document and a PDF, and the reply is a PowerPoint file with named slides rather than a wall of text to copy out. The same applies to documents and spreadsheets, and follow-up requests edit the file in place. A second mode builds small interactive things — the store screenshots show a flashcard set generated from a request to help someone revise for a psychology exam — which sits between an answer and an app.
Connectors link the assistant to accounts you already use: Slack, Asana, HubSpot, Google Drive, Figma, Google Calendar, Notion and Gmail appear in the store listing. Once connected, a question can be answered from your own documents rather than from the public web. Longer jobs run in the background and push a notification when they are done, so the phone can be locked while a task completes. That combination is aimed at work rather than at casual questions, which is the clearest difference from its rivals.
Claude Pro costs $20 monthly or $214.99 for a year. Above it, Max tiers run $124.99 and $249.99 a month for five and twenty times the usage, and one-off credit packs are sold at $28, $63 and $279. There is no advertising anywhere in the app. Apple rates it 18+, citing mature themes, medical and substance references and infrequent sexual content — the strictest rating of any assistant here. Google Play lists seven collected categories with four shared with third parties. Prices are US listings. Google Play records 50 million installs, an order of magnitude below its two largest rivals, so the community answers to common problems are thinner.

The assistant to pick when the output needs to be a file or the answer has to come from your own documents — connectors and generated presentations are what set it apart, and background tasks make longer work practical on a phone. Weigh the price ladder before subscribing: $20 is ordinary, $249.99 is not. And note the 18+ rating if the phone belongs to a teenager.

One rating per visitor, no sign-up. The average updates once a day. Store ratings are shown separately and are not mixed in.
There is a free tier with usage caps that reset, covering ordinary questions and some file work. Paying lifts the caps: $20 a month for Pro, or $124.99 and $249.99 for the two Max tiers. No advertising appears at any tier, and the Play listing carries no ads badge.
Presentations, documents and spreadsheets, delivered as downloadable files rather than text to copy. Attachments can be used as source material — a document and a PDF turned into a slide deck, for example — and follow-up requests edit the same file rather than starting over.
Pro is $20 a month or $214.99 a year. Max costs $124.99 monthly for five times the usage and $249.99 for twenty times. Extra usage credits are sold separately at $28, $63 and $279. Those are US in-app prices; buying on the web can differ.
Apple's listing cites infrequent profanity, mature themes, medical information, substance references and sexual content — the usual outcome for an assistant that will discuss adult subjects rather than refuse them. Practically it means the app is blocked by default under Screen Time restrictions set for a child's phone.
