Best Free Utility Apps on Mobile, Ranked
Google Translate is the best free utility app: it translates text, speech and camera images, works offline once you download a language, and has no ad
Google Classroom is where a teacher posts work, collects it and grades it against a points total, while students turn in files and see what is missing. Schools on Workspace for Education Fundamentals pay nothing and see no ads; a personal Gmail account works too, capped at 250 class members and without guardian summaries. The main limitation is the phone app itself: 2.8 stars on Google Play across 2.09 million reviews.

A school account from an institution on Workspace for Education Fundamentals, free for qualifying schools, allows 1,000 members and 50 teachers per class, 500 invitations a day per teacher and up to 20 guardians per student. A personal Gmail account suits homeschooling or tutoring, but Google caps each class at 250 members, limits you to creating 30 classes a day and joining 100 in total, and removes three things: emailing classmates, guardian summaries, and Gemini Notebook or Gems assigned through a class. Google also says children aged 13 and under should only use a school or nonprofit account.
Parents never sign in to a student's classes; Google cites privacy laws and offers email instead. A teacher or administrator sends the invitation, which expires after 120 days, and the student must use a school account. Daily (weekday) or weekly summaries list work not turned in, work due soon and recent teacher posts. Grades are left out, and summaries start switched off for each class until a teacher turns them on. Classes on Education Plus add a link to the student's Classwork page showing titles, attachments and due dates. Canvas Parent, by contrast, shows assignment and course grades and sends grade alerts wherever a school has enabled it.
Since June 30, 2025, teachers on every Workspace for Education edition have had more than 30 Gemini tools, from lesson plans to rubrics, at no extra charge. At launch they were English-only and limited to users 18 and older. From August 10, 2026 on the web and August 17 on mobile, students of any age whose school has switched on Gemini or Gemini Notebook get a Gemini tab for flashcards, practice quizzes and study guides built from their own assignments. The Classroom-side Gemini setting is on by default, so a district that wants under-18s excluded must place them in a group with it turned off. Google says student chats are not reviewed by humans or used to train models. The phone app gives teachers only five Gemini tools, and AI feedback drafts on written work need a paid tier.
On Android and iOS, the stream and assignment list stay readable without a signal. Turn on Available offline for a single attachment, or tap Save all files offline inside an assignment, then edit those copies from the Offline files menu; while connected, the app refreshes them in the background every 24 hours. Of the 150 newest English reviews on Google Play, posted September 14 to October 1, 2026, 66 gave one or two stars; the specific complaints include turn-ins that end in an error, uploads that fail and an app that will not open. Microsoft Teams for Education runs the same assign, turn-in and Grades loop on iOS and Android.

The 7.8 rewards an ad-free assignment workflow that qualifying schools get free, with Gemini tools for teachers and offline files on both phone platforms. It loses points to the phone app's reliability, rated 2.8 on Google Play and 2.1 on the App Store, and to guardian summaries that leave out grades. Install it when your school or tutor runs classes here. Parents who want grades on a phone fare better at schools using Canvas, whose Canvas Parent app shows them; Microsoft Teams offers a comparable Grades tab.

Yes. The app costs nothing on Google Play and the App Store, shows no ads and sells nothing inside. A personal Gmail account can teach or join classes, but each class tops out at 250 members, and guardian summaries, classmate email and Gems or Gemini Notebook assigned through a class are unavailable.
No. Guardians cannot sign in to a student's classes; they receive email summaries instead, daily on weekdays or weekly, covering missing work, upcoming work and teacher posts, but never grades. A teacher or administrator must invite them, and the student needs a school account. For grades, Google tells guardians to ask the student or teacher.
Education Fundamentals, which includes the app, costs nothing for qualifying institutions. Education Plus lists at $6 per user per year in the US and the Teaching and Learning add-on at $60 per user per year; prices are regional and can change. Either one lifts originality reports from five per class to unlimited and unlocks Gemini feedback drafts.
Partly. On Android and iOS you can read announcements and assignments offline and edit attachments downloaded beforehand, singly with Available offline or all at once with Save all files offline. Downloading needs a connection and free storage, and while online the app refreshes downloads in the background every 24 hours.
No ads appear in Classroom or other Workspace for Education core services, and Google says student information there is never sold, used for ad profiles or used to train its AI models. For K-12 users, Google also keeps personal information out of ad targeting in its other services. The Play data card still lists approximate location and contacts as collected.
