About ParentSquare

ParentSquare is the district's official channel: urgent alerts, permission forms with deadlines, event RSVPs, sign-ups, polls, payments and volunteer hours, with every child in a family on one account even when they attend three different schools. Messages translate automatically and can be answered in the reader's own language. Free for families, because the district pays for it.

ParentSquare Review: One Account, Three Schools

Every Child and Every School in One Feed

A parent with three children — third grade at a primary, sixth at a middle school, tenth at a high school — sees all of them under one login, with a rail for students, districts, schools, classes and groups. The notification list filters to a single school or shows all of them together, and each entry is typed rather than generic: an urgent alert about a weather closure at 2:15pm, a permission form marked due today with a Complete Form button, a spring concert with an RSVP and a date. That typing is what stops a school feed collapsing into an undifferentiated wall of posts.

Messages Translate in Both Directions

A teacher's note about a parent-teacher conference arrives in the reader's language, carrying a line stating it was translated automatically and an option to show the original; a reply written in Spanish travels back the same way. Threads accept reactions — one message in the store screens has twelve thumbs-up and five hearts — and a single thread can hold a homeroom plus three other groups at once. In a district where families speak several languages, that removes the step where a parent has to find someone to translate a letter before answering it.

Forms, Payments and the Platform It Absorbed

The More menu is what separates this from a messaging app: directory, links, resource hub, media, groups, sign-ups and RSVPs, forms and permissions, payments, polls and volunteer hours, each carrying a badge with the number outstanding — six forms, five polls, one payment. The company bought Remind in November 2023, a platform then reaching over 80% of US public schools, and folded its two-way texting and group join codes into this app. There is no advertising and nothing to purchase: 1 million installs and 4.3 stars on Play against 4.6 from 76,000 App Store ratings.

Pros

  • All children and all schools under one login
  • Messages translate automatically in both directions
  • Forms, payments and polls show what is outstanding
  • Urgent alerts are typed apart from ordinary posts
  • No advertising and nothing to purchase

Cons

  • Worthless unless your district has bought the platform
  • Voice recordings and emails appear on the data card
  • Notification volume depends on the school's restraint
  • Rated 4.3 on Play, below its own App Store average

Verdict

The most complete school-to-home app in this catalogue, and the only one that treats a family with three children at three schools as one account rather than three installs. Automatic translation in both directions is the feature that matters most to the families who need it. The catch is entirely outside your control: it works if the district bought it, and its usefulness depends on how disciplined that district is about posting.

Core function8.5Alerts, forms, payments, RSVPs and messaging across several schools at once.
Ease of use7.5Five tabs plus a deep More menu; finding a specific form takes a moment.
Monetisation9.0Free for families with no advertising — districts buy the licence.
Performance7.0Feeds and attachments load from the district's setup, so speed varies.
Privacy & permissions7.5Only crash logs and app interactions shared, though emails and audio are collected.

Frequently asked questions

1

Does ParentSquare cost families anything?

No. There is no advertising badge, no in-app purchase badge and no paid tier for parents. The school district buys the platform, and families sign in with an account the school creates from its own records, usually tied to the email address already on file.

2

How does the translation work?

Incoming messages appear in the reader's chosen language with a note saying they were translated automatically and a link to show the original text. Replies are translated the other way, so a parent writing in Spanish reaches a teacher who reads English without either side arranging anything.

3

Who pays for it?

The district or the school. That is also why the feature set varies between schools: payments, volunteer hours or sign-ups appear only where the district has enabled those modules. Families never see a price, an upsell or an advertisement inside the app.

4

Can the notifications be turned down?

The feed can be filtered to one school rather than all of them, and notification preferences sit behind the settings icon at the top of the list. What cannot be filtered is what schools choose to send — a district that posts twelve times a week will fill the list regardless of the settings.

5

What are the alternatives?

Remind, now owned by the same company, still runs classroom messaging for teachers who want only that. ClassDojo covers primary classrooms with tools aimed at teachers rather than administrators. Neither handles forms, payments or district-wide emergency alerts, which is what a district actually buys this for.
