Canvas is the phone client for the learning platform a large share of American colleges and schools run on: course cards, deadlines grouped by date, grades to two decimal places, and an inbox that reaches instructors. It works only if your institution uses the platform, and only as far as your institution switches things on. No advertising, no purchases, nothing to buy inside it.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-09-07. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
Course cards fill the opening screen — Biology 101, American Literature 401, Psychology 302, Music Theory 337 — each with its own colour and course code, and study groups listed beneath them. Opening a course gives Home with recent activity, then Announcements, Assignments, Discussions and People. What actually appears there is decided by teaching staff, so two modules in the same term behave differently: one publishes every rubric and reading, the next publishes a title and nothing else. This is a client for a system administered by someone else, which is the first thing to understand before blaming the app.
A widget lists courses with their current percentages — 89.52% in introductory calculus, 83.20% in a psychology module, 96.25% in corporate strategy, and No Grade where nothing has been marked yet — readable without opening anything. Assignment Details then shows the points available, a Graded badge, the deadline down to the minute, the accepted submission types (file upload, text entry or a website URL) and a dial with the result: 89 points, 89% out of 100. The To Do list separates work due tomorrow from work with no date at all, which is the distinction that actually governs a week.
The inbox spans every course at once with Unread, Starred, Sent and Archived tabs and a filter for a single module. Threads carry the group rather than one person, so a question aimed at an instructor reaches the assistants who usually answer faster. Google Play lists device IDs, approximate location, crash logs and app interactions as shared with third parties, and in-app messages, photos, personal information and approximate location as collected. There is no advertising badge and no in-app purchase badge: 10 million installs, 4.5 stars from 224,000 Play reviews, 4.7 from 2.77 million on the App Store.

A dependable client for something you did not choose: deadlines, grades and submissions in a form a phone can handle, with a widget that answers the only question most students open it for. Its limits are structural — the institution decides what appears, and the app cannot show what was never published. Nothing to pay, nothing to unlock, and no reason to install it unless your school runs the platform.

No. It is free, carries no advertising badge and offers no in-app purchases. The licence is bought by the college, university or school district, so students and parents install the app and sign in with credentials the institution issues, at no personal cost.
Each enrolled course with its current percentage, straight on the home screen — for example 89.52% in one module and No Grade in another where nothing has been marked. It updates as new marks are posted, so a result appears without opening the app or the course.
Not for students. What varies is not price but configuration: features such as discussions, rubrics or new quiz types are switched on by the institution. If something is missing, the answer usually lies with the administrators rather than with an upgrade.
No. Signing in requires an institution that runs the platform and issues you credentials; there is no personal account tier. If your school uses a different system — Blackboard, Moodle, Google Classroom — this app has nothing to show you at all.
The choice belongs to the institution, not the student. Blackboard and Moodle occupy the same role in universities that did not choose this platform, and Google Classroom covers much of it in schools. Where a course lives here, the mobile web version is the only other route in.

TikTok if the feed is the point; Instagram if the people are. On our scores it is 7.5 to 7.1, and the gap is weight and messaging: Instagram's iPhone
TikTok if what you want is a feed that fills ten minutes without asking you anything; YouTube if you also want the long video, the music and the live
