About Microsoft Teams

Teams runs meetings, chat and shared channels in one app, and since the free tier gained Communities it also organises a soccer club or a school PTA. Free group calls stop at 60 minutes and 100 participants, with 5 GB of cloud storage per user. The data card is long for a chat client: precise location, contacts and in-app messages all appear on it.

Microsoft Teams Review: 60 Free Minutes, 100 People

Free Meetings End at 60 Minutes

The free plan covers group calls and meetings of up to 60 minutes with as many as 100 participants, plus 5 GB of cloud storage per person. Lifting either ceiling means a paid business plan; a consumer Microsoft 365 subscription at $9.99 a month buys 1 TB of storage and the desktop apps, not longer calls. In a meeting the grid holds eight video tiles with a filmstrip of everyone else beneath, and camera, microphone, speaker, overflow and hang-up controls along the bottom. Joining from a link works without an account, which is what makes it usable for a club rather than only an employer.

Communities Turned It Into a School PTA App

The Home tab lists communities the way a messaging app lists chats — Project leads, Soccer league, Scouts, House remodel, School PTA — each with an unread count. Inside a 32-member community sit tabs for Events, Photos and Links, and posts that behave like a forum: an image, a call for volunteers, six reaction types and a thread running to 34 replies. Work structure stays on its own tab, where pinned channels sit above team channels — Marketing Design splitting into General, Design Systems, Icon Requests, Crits, Framework and Research, each carrying its own badge.

A Long Data Card for a Chat App

Google Play records name as shared with third parties and, as collected: files and docs, photos and videos, voice and audio recordings, contacts, SMS and in-app messages, approximate and precise location, plus app performance data. Precise location is the item worth questioning in a chat client. The listing shows in-app purchases and no advertising badge, against 500 million installs and 4.6 stars from 8.75 million reviews. Apple's side reads better: 4.8 from 3.4 million ratings, a gap that usually says something about how the two versions handle notifications.

Pros

  • Free meetings hold up to 100 participants
  • Communities organise clubs with events, photos and links
  • Pinned channels keep live work threads at the top
  • No advertising badge on the Play listing
  • Rated 4.8 on the App Store across 3.4 million ratings

Cons

  • Free group meetings cut off after 60 minutes
  • Precise location is collected by a chat app
  • Messages and contacts both appear on the data card
  • Free storage stops at 5 GB per user

Verdict

Two products in one install: a competent work client and, since Communities arrived, a genuinely usable club organiser with events, photos and threaded posts. The 60-minute ceiling on free meetings is the pressure point, and the data card is the reason for the low privacy score — precise location and message collection are a lot to accept from a chat app. Worth it if your workplace or your club already lives here.

Core function8.5Meetings, chat, channels and communities all work from one account on a phone.
Ease of use7.5Four navigation layers — chat, teams, channels, communities — take learning.
Monetisation7.5No advertising, though the free tier's 60-minute ceiling is a firm sales pitch.
Performance7.0A heavy client whose video grid and notifications drain a phone during long calls.
Privacy & permissions5.5Precise location, contacts, messages and audio all listed as collected data.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is Microsoft Teams free?

Yes, for personal use. The free plan covers meetings of up to 60 minutes with up to 100 participants, unlimited chat, communities and 5 GB of cloud storage per user. The Play listing shows in-app purchases but no advertising badge, and nothing inside the app is gated behind an advert.

2

What are Communities?

Group spaces built for clubs and families rather than employers: an events tab, a photo tab, a links tab and a feed where posts collect reactions and replies. The example community in the store screens has 32 members and a post carrying 34 replies, which is closer to a forum than a group chat.

3

What removes the 60-minute limit?

A paid Teams plan sold to businesses, not a consumer subscription. Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year adds 1 TB of storage and the desktop apps, and Family at $12.99 covers six people, but neither extends the free meeting length. Prices are US figures.

4

Can people join without an account?

Yes — a meeting link opens in the app or a browser and lets a guest enter with a name only, which is what makes it practical for a school group where not everyone has an account. Guests cannot see the channels or files behind the meeting.

5

What are the alternatives?

Zoom cuts free group meetings at 40 minutes with the same 100-participant ceiling, and Google Meet allows 60. For club-style communities rather than meetings, Discord organises the same thing around channels and voice rooms, with no time limit and a very different tone.
