Best Free Utility Apps on Mobile, Ranked
Google Translate is the best free utility app: it translates text, speech and camera images, works offline once you download a language, and has no ad
Google Lens searches with your camera or a saved image: it translates signs in over 100 languages, copies text, identifies plants and products, scans QR codes and explains homework problems step by step. The standalone Android app is a lightweight entry point, while Google's own Lens page sends downloads to the Google app, where voice and video questions are documented. Searches need a connection, and Shopping ads sit beside visual matches.

Google's Android help names Google Photos, Google Assistant and the Google app as places to open Lens, and the download buttons on lens.google lead to the Google app, not to this listing. The standalone app's own icon opens straight into the Lens camera view. It has not been updated on Google Play since August 5, 2025, while Google documents abilities such as voice and video questions, asked by holding the shutter button, for Lens in the Google app. September 2026 Play reviews report it will not open without the Google app. Select Android phones also put Lens in the Camera app, and on iPhone there is no separate version: Lens sits inside the Google app and Google Photos.
Point the camera at a sign or menu and Lens lays the translation over the original text; coverage spans more than 100 languages, matching Google Translate. Text can be copied, a concert date turned into a calendar event and a QR code opened as a link. Since October 2023, a photographed trigonometry or calculus problem returns a step-by-step explanation, and Lens can read certain geometry triangle diagrams together with their labels. Multisearch, added in 2022, lets you type words onto a photo search, such as a colour or "coffee table". For products, Lens drew on a Shopping Graph of more than 45 billion products in October 2024, and shopping results are offered in 35 countries.
Touch and hold the home button or navigation handle, and Circle to Search lets you circle, highlight, scribble on or tap anything on screen without switching apps. Google lists it as a separate way to search from Lens, though both accept multisearch: circle a jacket, then type a colour. It launched on January 31, 2024, on the Pixel 8 and Galaxy S24, and by July 2026 Google counted more than 580 million Android devices. Google's requirements are a supported phone, such as a Pixel 6 or later, Google as the default digital assistant and an updated Google app; the Lens app is not among them. A Translate button converts the whole screen, though the gesture may not work in banking or medical apps.
The Play Data safety form lists five data types: photos, precise location, device IDs, crash and diagnostic logs, and app activity including search history. Location, device IDs and search history are marked partly for advertising or marketing, with no third-party sharing declared. Lens searches appear on a Lens page in My Activity under Web & App Activity; keeping the images needs a separate box, Include Visual Search History, which Google's help says is off by default. Google is also rolling out Search Services History, whose Save Media setting stores Lens images and may use them to train AI models, keeping training copies detached from your account for up to four years. Since late 2024, Shopping ads appear above and alongside visual matches.

We score Google Lens 7.5 for the visual search behind it: translation in more than 100 languages, step-by-step homework help, multisearch and product matching. Points come off because the standalone app has not been updated since August 2025, reviews say it needs the Google app anyway, and its data form lists location and device IDs used partly for advertising. Take it for a one-tap camera icon. Skip it if the Google app is already installed, or if you would rather not send photos to Google.

Yes, it is free: the Play listing shows no in-app purchases and no ads badge. Google's own Lens page, though, sends Android and iPhone users to the Google app instead, and September 2026 Play reviews say the standalone app will not open without the Google app installed.
Yes, for many problems. Since October 2023, a trigonometry or calculus problem photographed with Lens returns a step-by-step explanation, and certain geometry triangle diagrams are read together with their text. Google also lists history, chemistry, biology and physics, where Lens returns explainers, videos and web results rather than a single answer.
Yes, inside the results. Google announced in October 2024 that Shopping ads would appear above and alongside Lens visual search results, noting that 20 percent of Lens searches were shopping-related. The app itself has no purchases, no subscription and no Contains ads badge on Google Play.
Open the Lens page in My Activity to review and delete searches saved under Web & App Activity. Saving the images is separate: Include Visual Search History, which Google says is off by default, or the newer Save Media setting in Search Services History. Switching Save Media off keeps media already saved until you delete it, and Google Takeout can download it.
Google Translate is the pick for travel: once language packs are downloaded, its camera translation keeps working in flight mode. ChatGPT reads photos and answers questions about them on its free tier, within usage caps. The Google app runs the same Lens plus voice and video questions, so it can replace the standalone app.
