Best Free Social Apps for Adults, Ranked

Add ScoredApps as a preferred source on GoogleA fridge door where BAND, Reddit, Facebook, Threads and Instagram magnets hold a picnic invite — Best Free Social Apps for Adults, Ranked

Adults use social apps for different things than teenagers do: running a club, finding people who share an interest, selling a sofa, keeping up with friends without an algorithm deciding what they see. BAND wins for that grown-up job — private groups with a shared calendar, no public posts and no algorithmic feed, free with ads. Below it, Reddit for interests, Facebook for local groups and Marketplace, and the feed apps ranked by how much control you keep. All eight are free; costs and limits are as of October 2026.

How we picked

We ranked the eight social apps in our catalogue (Facebook Lite sits under Facebook, since it is the same account) that adults use to connect rather than only to message — BAND, Reddit, Facebook, Facebook Lite, Threads, Instagram, TikTok and Clapper. Our scores weigh what the app does well, what it costs, how much it collects, and how reliably it runs, and we read each through one question: what does a grown-up actually use this for?

Messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram are covered in our messaging ranking, so they are not repeated here.

1. BAND — the app for the groups you actually belong to

BAND, from NAVER, is built for organisations rather than friendships: a sports team, a church, a dance troupe or a booster club each gets a board, a shared calendar with sign-ups, photo albums and a chat. Nothing is public, and there is no algorithmic feed — you see what your group posted, in order.

It is free with advertising, and removing ads costs $1.99 for 30 days. Our score: 7.6. It wins because it solves the adult social problem most other apps ignore: organising real people around real events without turning them into an audience.

2. Reddit — communities by interest, ranked by votes

Reddit is a network of communities rather than a feed of people: subreddits for cat photos, makeup, cosplay or a specific city, each with its own moderators and rules, and comments ranked by votes rather than by recency. That structure is why searching a question plus the word reddit has become a habit.

For adults with a hobby, a niche job or a new city, it is the fastest way to find people who know the subject. It is free with advertising; Premium costs $6.99 a month. Our score: 7.2.

3. Facebook — Groups and Marketplace are the useful half

Facebook is four products sharing a navigation bar: a feed, Reels, Groups and Marketplace. For most adults now the useful half is the bottom two — a local classifieds board and interest groups with thousands of members, from parenting to vintage cars.

It is free and carries advertising, and Meta takes a cut only when you ship a Marketplace sale. Google Play records more than ten billion installs. Our score: 7.0.

Facebook Lite — the same account on a small phone

Facebook Lite is Meta's separate Android client for the same account, built for slow networks and low-memory phones. Its download is under 4 MB against more than 80 MB for the full app, because Meta's servers assemble each screen and send it compressed; feed, Reels, Marketplace and messages all fit inside.

What does not shrink is data collection — Google Play lists the same 14 categories as the full app. Our score: 6.9. For an older phone or a tight data plan, it is the better way to use Facebook.

4. Threads — text conversation, now with ads

Threads is Meta's text-first app built on Instagram accounts and aimed at people who left X. Posts are short, replies stack into conversations, and polls, communities and direct messages have been added since launch. Google Play records more than 500 million installs, and advertising completed its global rollout in January 2026. Our score: 7.4.

5. Instagram — three apps in one, and the heaviest download

Instagram runs a photo feed, a Reels tab that behaves like a rival video service, and direct messages that carry much of the traffic. On iPhone the download has grown to 607 MB, heavier than any other social app most people carry. Teen accounts are private and filtered by default, which matters if your household shares it. Our score: 7.2.

6. TikTok — the feed decides

TikTok is a vertical video feed where the For You page learns from watch time rather than from the accounts you follow. It is also a shop and a live-streaming platform where Coins bought from $0.29 turn into gifts. The iPhone build now weighs a full gigabyte. Our score: 7.6 — high for what it does, ranked low here because it is the app where an adult has the least say over what appears.

7. Clapper — an over-18 video network in transition

Clapper is a short-video and livestream network whose terms require users to be 18, with posts up to about ten minutes and no ads in the feed. Creators earn from coin-bought gifts, a profile Shop and paid Group Chats, withdrawing once $100 builds up. The catch is churn: Clubs, Fam Tiers and Radio are being shut down in late October 2026. Our score: 6.5.

Cost and control

What these apps cost you, without a price

All eight are free to use, and all but Clapper show advertising in the feed. The real cost is elsewhere. Three of these apps are heavy: Instagram's iPhone download is 607 MB, TikTok's a full gigabyte, against under 4 MB for Facebook Lite. And the Meta apps collect broadly — Google Play lists 14 data categories for Facebook Lite, the same as for the full Facebook app, which is the useful reminder that a lighter app is not a more private one.

The only paid options here are small and optional: $1.99 for 30 days without ads on BAND, $6.99 a month for Reddit Premium, and Coins on TikTok from $0.29 if you want to tip a creator. None of them is needed to use the app properly.

Control over what you see

The deciding difference between these apps is who chooses your feed. BAND shows your group's posts in order. Reddit shows what you subscribed to, sorted by votes. Facebook Groups and Marketplace are searched rather than served. Threads, Instagram and TikTok increasingly fill the screen with recommended posts from accounts you never chose. If an app is meant to keep you in touch rather than keep you scrolling, pick from the top half of this list.

Bottom line

BAND is the best free social app for adults: private groups, a shared calendar, no public posts and no algorithm, for the teams, clubs and congregations people actually run. Use Reddit to find people who share an interest, Facebook for local groups and Marketplace, and Facebook Lite if your phone is small or your data is tight.
