About Inkitt Galatea: Audio & eBooks

Galatea is free to install and to start books, but after the opening chapters each unlock costs points or a timed wait, and every audiobook needs the subscription. Inkitt, the Berlin-founded publisher behind it, adapts romance and fantasy serials from its own self-publishing site into short chapters, some with sound effects or narration. The catch is cost: unlocks start at 10 points and climb, while reviewers say check-ins pay one point a day.

Inkitt Galatea Review: Curated Romance Serials, Metered One Chapter at a Time

Free reading runs on a timer and 10-point chapter unlocks

After the opening chapters, each one unlocks with points or after a countdown. The help center says unlocks typically start at 10 points and cost more the further you read, and that the countdown also lengthens with progress. Play and App Store reviewers in 2025 and 2026 most often describe a six-hour wait, with later chapters at 15, 20 or 25 points. Free points are thin: reviewers cite one point for the daily check-in plus one-off tasks such as installing the sister app CandyJar or joining the Facebook group. Some titles have moved to points-only or subscription-only and have no timer at all, and an August 2026 reviewer asked for those books to be marked before you start.

Audiobooks and the Select your narrator screen

Audiobooks have their own tab next to Books and Immersive, and a Select your narrator screen lets you swipe between voices before playback. The help center says all audiobooks are subscription-only, so points and timers do not apply to them. In a February 2024 TechCrunch interview by Ingrid Lunden, Inkitt said its audiobooks used ElevenLabs text-to-speech and that DeepL translated each book into 10 languages. Play reviews fit that picture: users mention two or three voice options and narration whose tone sometimes misses the scene, and an April 2026 reviewer said audio lags behind text when a serial gets new chapters. Immersive stories are the other format; they ask whether to play with sound before the first line.

Galatea Unlimited at $69.99 a year, charged upfront

The US App Store lists Galatea Yearly and Galatea Unlimited at $69.99, with point packs from $3.99 to $24.99. The in-app figure of about $5.83 a month is only the yearly price divided by 12: the help center confirms annual plans are charged in full at the start, and Play reviewers in February and September 2026 said they expected a monthly charge and paid about $75. A Friends & Family plan covers up to five accounts; the help center's upgrade example prices it at $99.99. When a subscription ends, progress resets to where it stood before you subscribed. Deleting the app does not stop billing, and Google's own refund window is 48 hours. Prices vary by region, so check them in the app.

Tracking labels, 16+ and 18+ shelves, and a Teen rating on Play

Apple's privacy label lists purchases, identifiers and usage data as used to track you across other companies' apps; Google Play's form says device IDs, purchase history and app interactions are shared, including for advertising. The privacy policy, updated September 29, 2026, names AdMob, Firebase, Meta, Adjust and Branch, and allows transfers between Inkitt GmbH in Berlin and Inkitt Inc. in the US. On content, the help center splits books into 16+ and 18+, and choosing Under 18 hides the second group; each chapter title also carries a one-to-three chili heat level. The ratings disagree: the App Store rates the app 18+ and the privacy policy says it is meant for adults, yet Google Play shows Teen.

Pros

  • Free chapters unlock on a countdown, so reading without paying is possible
  • The $69.99 yearly plan removes timers and per-chapter costs on Originals
  • Under 18 setting limits the catalog to books rated 16+
  • Narrator picker and sound-enabled Immersive stories go beyond plain text
  • Friends & Family plan shares one subscription across up to five accounts

Cons

  • Unlocks start at 10 points and cost more the further you read
  • In-app plan is billed yearly upfront despite a $5.83 monthly figure
  • All audiobooks and some books cannot be unlocked with points at all
  • Each sign-in method is a separate account; subscriptions do not cross iOS and Android

Verdict

We score Inkitt Galatea 6.2: the curated romance catalog, audiobooks and sound-enabled Immersive stories are solid, but the rising points ladder and yearly upfront billing pull Monetisation down to 4.0. Take it if you follow a few serials slowly on the free timer, or will use the $69.99 year in full. Skip it if you want to finish long books fast without paying, need a monthly plan in the app, or are under 16: the mildest shelf is rated 16+.

Core function7.5Curated Inkitt serials, a Harlequin collection, audiobooks and Immersive stories with sound; reading is scroll-only, with no page mode.
Ease of use6.5Dark mode and font sizes help, but every sign-in method creates a separate account and premium-only books are hard to spot.
Monetisation4.0Unlocks start at 10 points and climb, check-ins pay about one point, and the $69.99 plan bills yearly.
Performance6.525 App Store updates in 2026 so far, yet September reviewers still report freezes, crashes and timers that reset.
Privacy & permissions6.0Apple's label lists tracking via purchases and identifiers; the policy names AdMob, Meta and Adjust; deletion requests are supported.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is the Galatea app free?

Partly. Installing and starting books is free, and many chapters unlock after a countdown, but the help center says unlocks typically cost 10 points and rise as you read further. Reviewers cite about one free point a day from check-ins, all audiobooks require a subscription, and some titles now accept only points or a subscription.

2

How long do you wait for the next chapter on Galatea?

Most reviewers describe six hours, though the help center says the countdown grows as you progress through a book, and some reviewers report 24-hour waits on certain titles. The timer needs an internet connection to sync, and books moved to points-only or subscription-only have no timer at all.

3

How much does a Galatea subscription cost?

On the US App Store, Galatea Yearly and Galatea Unlimited cost $69.99, charged upfront; the $5.83 monthly figure in the app is only a breakdown. Point packs run from $3.99 to $24.99, and the help center prices the five-account Friends & Family plan at $99.99 in an example. Prices vary by region.

4

What happens when my Galatea subscription ends?

Your progress resets to where it was before you subscribed, and chapters opened through the subscription lock again until you renew. Deleting the app does not cancel billing, so cancel in App Store or Google Play settings at least 24 hours before renewal. Apple considers refunds within 60 days, Google within 48 hours, and Galatea itself does not refund points.

5

What are the best alternatives to Galatea?

Wattpad, Dreame and GoodNovel are the closest. On the US App Store, Wattpad Premium is $59.99 a year and Premium+ $9.99 a month, Dreame sells 1,000 coins for $9.99, and the GoodNovel Weekly Membership is $19.99, so four weeks there cost more than a $69.99 year here. These prices can change by region.
