About Goodreads: Book Tracker & More

Goodreads is Amazon's free reading log and review network. You shelve books as Want to Read, Currently Reading, Read or, since March 2026, Did Not Finish, and chase a yearly Reading Challenge goal. Its edge is scale: members added 26 million reviews and 300 million ratings in the year to October 2023. The catch is ads you cannot pay to remove, whole-star ratings only, and an Android app that trails the website.

Goodreads Review: The Biggest Book Community, With Ads You Can't Pay Off

What $0 buys: every feature, plus ads with no paid exit

Nothing in the app costs money: neither Google Play nor the App Store lists an in-app purchase, so there is no premium tier and no locked shelf or stat. Advertising pays instead: Play shows a Contains ads badge, Apple's age rating lists Advertising, and the privacy notice says personal information is used for interest-based ads. Play reviews from May to September 2026 describe the load growing: video ads for non-book products, a banner on the My Books page that loads late and pushes the shelves down, and promotional push notifications dressed up as book alerts. The most-upvoted 2026 review, with 132 helpful votes, complains that no option exists to pay the ads away. Giveaways, the main free extra, let members enter draws for print and Kindle copies sponsored by authors and publishers, and many print draws accept US entrants only.

Reading Challenge and the Did Not Finish shelf, still in whole stars

The Reading Challenge starts with a yearly book count, and since mid-2025 rotating limited-time achievements, such as a Summer Challenge, run alongside it. Friends' progress, dropped in early 2025 to loud complaints, is back on the challenge home in both apps and on the web. The Did Not Finish shelf arrived in March 2026: an abandoned book with a read date counts toward your goal, and exclusive custom shelves already named dnf or abandoned were converted automatically. Link an Amazon account and the Kindle app marks books Currently Reading and Read on its own. Ratings, though, are whole stars only, and a help article updated in September 2026 says there are no plans for half stars. Play reviews from 2024 through September 2026 also report yearly totals that miss books and read dates that change by themselves.

Amazon ownership, ad identifiers and a CSV export that stays on desktop

The company behind the app, Goodreads LLC, is an Amazon subsidiary, and its privacy notice says data may be correlated with your Amazon.com account if you have one. Play's Data safety form lists device IDs shared for advertising, approximate location collected for analytics, and optional data types that include contacts and sexual orientation. Apple's label files name, email, user ID and device ID under the developer's own advertising or marketing. Leaving is possible but split across devices. The full data request sits in the app's privacy settings and arrives as a zip of JSON files behind a link that lasts 90 days, while the CSV export of your shelves works only on the desktop site. Facebook sign-in ended in November 2023, and as recently as April 2026 a Play reviewer described being locked out of an account opened that way.

Pros

  • Members posted 26 million reviews in the 12 months to October 2023
  • Every feature is free, with no in-app purchases on either store
  • Did Not Finish shelf counts abandoned books that carry a read date
  • Linked Kindle app shelves books as Currently Reading and Read automatically
  • Camera scanner reads covers or barcodes, and iOS can bulk-scan a stack
  • Full data download and account deletion both work inside the app

Cons

  • Ads keep spreading in 2026, and no paid plan removes them
  • Whole-star ratings only, and the help center rules out half stars
  • Audible edition tracking and US buy-or-borrow links launched on iOS, not Android
  • CSV library export and shelf exclusivity settings work only on desktop

Verdict

We score it 6.8. The points come from a community that added 26 million reviews in a year, a Reading Challenge that now handles abandoned books, and Kindle auto-shelving. They go on ads that cannot be paid away, whole-star ratings, an Android app that trails iOS and the website, and data tied to Amazon. Take it if your friends already log books there or you read on Kindle. Skip it if you want ad-free tracking or finer ratings, where StoryGraph does more for free.

Core function8.5Largest reader community, Reading Challenge, Did Not Finish shelf, scanner and Kindle auto-shelving; ratings stay whole-star.
Ease of use6.0Review sorting, CSV export and shelf exclusivity are desktop-only; Audible edition tracking launched without Android.
Monetisation6.5Nothing is paywalled, but ads now reach My Books and push alerts, with no paid way out.
Performance6.0September 2026 Play reviews report slow loading, sign-in loops and Reading Challenge totals that miss books.
Privacy & permissions5.5Device IDs shared for advertising, data correlated with Amazon accounts, and an optional sexual orientation field.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is Goodreads completely free?

Yes. Every feature is free, and neither Google Play nor the App Store lists an in-app purchase. The trade-off is advertising: Play marks the app Contains ads, and there is no paid tier that removes them. In 2026, Play reviewers report more video ads, a banner on the My Books page and promotional push notifications.

2

Can you give half stars on Goodreads?

No. Ratings are whole stars from one to five, and a help article updated in September 2026 says there are no plans to add half stars because of the complexity they would bring. If finer ratings matter to you, StoryGraph rates in half and quarter stars, and Fable supports half stars.

3

Does Goodreads have a premium subscription?

No. Neither app store lists a paid plan, so no feature sits behind a subscription and no purchase turns ads off. Money comes from advertising and from authors and publishers, who pay for Giveaways, while the Author Program itself is free. Rival trackers sell extras instead: StoryGraph Plus is $4.99 a month and Fable Plus $5.99, US prices that can change.

4

How do I export my Goodreads library?

On the desktop site, open My Books, choose Import and export, then Export Library to get a CSV file; the apps cannot do this. For all your data, use the request in the app's privacy settings: you get a zip of JSON files, and the download link stays valid for 90 days. Deleting the account removes shelves and friends permanently.

5

What is a good alternative to Goodreads?

StoryGraph is the closest swap: it is free, rates in quarter stars and imports your Goodreads shelves, including Did Not Finish, with an optional Plus plan at $4.99 a month. Fable suits book clubs, with chapter-by-chapter discussion rooms and Plus at $5.99. If you read mostly on Kindle, staying makes sense, because the Kindle app shelves books into Goodreads automatically.
