Why Facebook Suggests the Friends It Does
Facebook suggests the friends it does because People You May Know is built from five documented signals, not from reading your mind: friends in common
Facebook on a phone is four products sharing a navigation bar: a feed, Reels, Groups and Marketplace, with Stories and profiles around them. For most people now the useful half is the bottom two — a local classifieds board and interest groups with thousands of members. Google Play records more than ten billion installs. The app is free, carries advertising, and takes a cut only when you ship a Marketplace sale.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-09-07. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
Selling locally and handing over the item in person costs nothing. The fee appears when you ship: Meta takes 5% per shipment, or a flat $0.40 on any shipment of $8 or less, deducted before the payout reaches you. On a $10 shipment that is $0.50; on a $6 one, $0.40. That is materially cheaper than the general marketplaces, which is why Marketplace has become the reason many people keep the app installed at all. Listings are filtered by distance — the default view shows picks within a set radius of your town.
A group page here looks nothing like the feed: a member count, a join state, and tabs for chats, reels, photos and featured posts, moderated by whoever runs it. Public groups run to thousands of members around narrow subjects, and they have absorbed most of the discussion traffic that used to sit on the timeline. Two practical notes: groups are searchable from inside the app, and joining one changes what the main feed shows you, since group activity feeds the same recommendation system as everything else.
The cost is paid in data. Google Play lists 14 collected categories, with personal information and device identifiers shared with third parties, and the listing carries a Contains ads badge; advertising appears in the feed, between Reels and inside Stories. Privacy Checkup walks through who sees your phone number, birthday and past posts, and which outside apps still log in with the account. Two-factor sign-in accepts a hardware security key, an authenticator app or a 6-digit SMS code, and a passkey can replace the password. The app is also among the heaviest on the phone; Meta's separate Facebook Lite build, past a billion Play installs, keeps Marketplace and runs on 2G. The two stores broadly agree on quality, at 4.6 from 186 million Play reviews and 4.5 from 28 million on Apple's side.

Install it for Marketplace and Groups rather than for the feed: a local classifieds board with no fee on in-person sales, and communities that still hold real conversation. Understand what pays for that — fourteen data categories collected and advertising on every surface — and run Privacy Checkup once after installing. Skip the full app if storage is tight: Facebook Lite keeps Marketplace in a far smaller build.

Yes. Posting, Groups, Stories, Reels and browsing Marketplace all cost nothing, and advertising pays for it — the Play listing carries a Contains ads badge. Two things involve money: a 5% fee on shipped Marketplace sales, and Meta Verified, an optional subscription for a badge and account support.
A classifieds board inside the app, sorted by distance from where you are, where people list secondhand furniture, plants, tools and electronics. Local pickup deals are arranged in messages and cost nothing. Shipping turns it into a transaction Meta processes, which is where its fee applies.
Nothing for a local sale handed over in person. For a shipped sale, Meta deducts 5% per shipment, with a flat $0.40 on shipments of $8 or less — so $0.50 on a $10 shipment and $0.40 on a $6 one. The deduction happens before the payout arrives.
Both options live in Meta's Accounts Center: deactivation hides the profile, photos and posts until you log back in, and permanent deletion removes them for good. Deactivation keeps Messenger usable, which is the usual reason people choose it over deletion.
For classifieds, Craigslist and eBay cover the same ground with different fees and no social layer. For the feed, Instagram from the same company handles photos and Reels with a younger audience. Nothing else combines local selling, interest groups and a feed in one free app, which is why it persists.
