Best Android Customisation Apps, Ranked by Our Scores
Two apps tie at the top of this list at 7.4, and they do opposite things: SwiftKey replaces the keyboard you type on all day, KWGT lets you build home
KWGT is free for building your own Android home screen widgets from scratch; the one-time $6.99 Pro unlock is needed to import presets made by others, remove ads or move saved widgets to a new phone. Kustom Industries of Milan gives it formulas, global variables and Flows automations instead of fixed templates. The cost is time: the editor takes real learning, and widgets freeze when battery optimization stops its background service.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-10-01. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
Kustom's help pages state that building a preset from scratch is free and will stay that way, so the whole editor is open without paying. The paywall sits on imports. Opening a .kwgt file a friend sent, applying most skin packs sold on Google Play or restoring a backup from storage all need Pro. In an August 2026 reply on Google Play, the developer added that exported presets reload only on the same device, and only if the app was never reinstalled, so a new phone in practice means buying Pro. The free version also shows AdMob ads. Pro is a one-time $6.99 license in the U.S., with no subscription; prices vary by region and may change.
Almost any property in the editor can become a formula: $li(lat)$ returns your latitude, and $si(swidth)$ reads the screen width. Global variables let one color or font drive an entire design, and Komponents package a clock or weather block as a reusable module with its own options. Each layer also has a Flows tab, where a touch, a cron-style schedule or a formula result starts a chain of actions, such as fetching JSON from a website and parsing it. The July 2026 update added gh() for reading a global's history and a broadcast that tells Tasker when a preset loads. None of this costs extra, but it reads more like programming than design.
Pro is sold twice on Google Play: as a $6.99 purchase inside the app and as the separate KWGT Pro Key, which has no interface and only unlocks the main app. You need one, not both, yet recent reviews show buyers unsure which one they own. Skin packs from other designers are priced by their authors and not covered by Pro. Google Play Pass subscribers get the app without ads or in-app purchases. The bigger hidden cost is background running: apps built for Android 8 and later are battery-optimized by default, so the Kustom service shows a permanent notification unless you exclude it. The help pages name Samsung's Smart Manager, Xiaomi's battery settings and Greenify as common reasons a clock stops updating.
KLWP, from the same developer, draws a live wallpaper instead of widgets, so it can animate and update faster, but it takes over your wallpaper and has its own $6.99 Pro Key. UCCW by VasuDev, the older widget maker with 5M+ installs, says on its Play listing that it is no longer maintained; its last update shipped in November 2022. Widgify offers ready-made themes applied in a tap, with in-app purchases listed from $2.99 to $19.99. Of KWGT's 150 newest English Play reviews, from late June to late September 2026, 45 give one or two stars: 14 concern paying for Pro, 10 describe widgets that freeze, break or vanish, and 8 call the editor hard to learn.

We scored KWGT 7.4 because its free editor offers formulas, global variables and Flows rather than templates, and Pro costs a one-time $6.99, not a subscription. Take it if you will learn a scripting-style editor, or want designers' skin packs and will pay once to import them. Skip it if you want widgets that apply in a tap, as Widgify offers, or if your phone's battery manager kills background apps and you cannot exclude this one.

Yes, for widgets you build yourself. The free version shows ads but does not limit presets you create. Pro is needed to import presets made by others, load backups from storage, recover presets and remove ads, and most skin packs on Google Play require it; a few featured packs are marked free.
Yes, but not by default. Widgets refresh once a minute while the screen is on; setting Update mode to Fast in the app's Advanced options allows per-second updates. Android widgets keep rendering even when another app covers them, so fast updates on complex presets cost battery.
It is if you want other designers' presets or need to keep your widgets when changing phones. The $6.99 U.S. price is a one-time license, bought either in the app or as the separate KWGT Pro Key app, and you need only one. Skin packs are sold separately. Prices vary by region and may change.
Only with Pro. The free version can export a preset, but the developer says exported files reload only on the same device and only if the app has not been reinstalled. Loading them on a new phone counts as an external import, which is one of the features Pro unlocks.
Use KLWP to theme the whole home screen: as a live wallpaper it can animate, react to scrolling and update faster on any launcher. Use KWGT for individual widgets, next to another live wallpaper, or on launchers and lock screen apps without live wallpaper support. Each has its own $6.99 Pro unlock from Kustom Industries.
