About Microsoft SwiftKey AI Keyboard

Microsoft's SwiftKey keeps the model that learns your typing on the phone unless you switch on OneDrive backup, yet it is not silent: a 2022 Trinity College Dublin test caught usage telemetry, tagged with the Google advertising ID, leaving after consent was declined. In return you get a free keyboard covering 700-plus languages, five active at once on Android. Its weak spot this autumn is stability, with freeze reports after September updates.

SwiftKey Review: Predictions Stay on the Phone, Usage Data Does Not

No Paid Tier Since 2016: Five Languages on Android, Two on iPhone

The last premium themes went free in December 2016, months after Microsoft bought SwiftKey for a reported $250 million, and the App Store still lists themes as in-app purchases priced at $0.00. The real split is between platforms. Android covers more than 700 languages with up to five active at once, detected as you type; the iPhone version caps you at two. Incognito mode, which stops learning and turns the keys black, exists only on Android, and Microsoft's own voice typing recognises English only. Unpinned clipboard clips vanish after an hour, and iOS keeps at most 30 of them at 1,000 characters each. Google Play still labels the listing Contains ads.

What Leaves the Phone: Snippets, Telemetry and the Advertising ID

By default the language model lives on the device, and Microsoft says it learns nothing from password fields or long numbers such as card numbers. Sharing typing snippets, short phrases with keypress and correction data, is a separate opt-in under Privacy > Help Microsoft improve. The quieter stream is telemetry. When Trinity College Dublin researchers decrypted traffic from version 7.8.3.5 on a Pixel 2 in April 2022, each typing session was logged with the app name, duration and counts of predicted versus typed words, alongside the Google advertising ID, even after setup consent was refused. No typed text appeared. In the same tests Gboard offered an opt-out and the open-source AnySoftKeyboard sent nothing. Microsoft's September 2026 privacy statement calls device and usage collection opt-in; we have not re-tested the current build.

OneDrive Replaced SwiftKey Accounts on May 31, 2026

Backup now runs only through a Microsoft account: standalone SwiftKey accounts, including Google and Apple sign-ins, were retired on May 31, 2026, and data left in them was set for deletion. What syncs is a readable list of learned words plus the typing model, kept in OneDrive's Apps > SwiftKey folder, where you can delete it. Voice typing sends audio to Microsoft's speech service, and the Bing search button passes queries, IP address and location to Bing. Sync has misfired publicly before: in July 2016 strangers' email addresses and phone numbers surfaced as predictions, and cloud sync was switched off. Play's Data safety card declares no third-party sharing but lists location and search history among data used for advertising.

Copilot Left in 2025; September 2026 Updates Brought Freeze Reports

A Microsoft support FAQ dated February 2025 says the Copilot chat and Compose integrations were removed, leaving Editor, which proofreads grammar and punctuation once you have typed three words. The Play description still advertises both. Reliability is the bigger worry: late-September 2026 reviews in English, Spanish and Portuguese describe the keyboard failing to appear or freezing after the mid-month updates, and Microsoft's replies prescribe clearing the cache. Of the 150 English reviews Google ranks most relevant, written between September 2024 and September 2026, 70 give one or two stars, most often over predictions and autocorrect. Microsoft has also told reviewers that the prediction bar cannot be hidden and that copies preinstalled by phone makers cannot be fully uninstalled.

Pros

  • More than 700 languages, with five active at once on Android
  • No paid tier: every premium theme has been free since December 2016
  • Prediction model stays on the phone unless OneDrive backup is on
  • Incognito mode switches on by itself in private browser tabs
  • Password fields and long card-style numbers are excluded from learning

Cons

  • 2022 study caught advertising-ID telemetry sent after consent was declined
  • Late-September 2026 reviews report freezes and a keyboard that fails to appear
  • iPhone version allows two languages and has no Incognito mode
  • Backup now requires a Microsoft account; Google and Apple sign-ins are gone

Verdict

We score it 7.4: five simultaneous languages from a pool of 700-plus, automatic Incognito and no paid tier hold it up, while telemetry found in 2022 and September 2026 freeze reports pull it down. Take it if you type in several languages on Android every day. Skip it if you want a keyboard that sends nothing home; in the 2022 tests only AnySoftKeyboard managed that. On iPhone, with two languages and no Incognito, Apple's keyboard costs you little.

Core function8.0700-plus languages and five at once on Android, but 2026 reviews fault autocorrect for replacing correct words.
Ease of use7.5Themes, toolbar and number row adjust freely, yet Microsoft confirms the prediction bar cannot be hidden.
Monetisation8.5No subscription or paid themes since 2016, though Google Play labels the listing Contains ads.
Performance6.0Reviews in three languages report freezes and a missing keyboard after the mid-September 2026 updates.
Privacy & permissions6.0Local model and password exclusion, offset by advertising-ID telemetry found in 2022 and a 2016 sync leak.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is SwiftKey free, or does Microsoft collect what you type?

It is free, and Microsoft says your typing is learned on the phone unless you turn on OneDrive backup or opt in to sharing snippets. Usage data is different: a 2022 Trinity College Dublin test found session statistics tagged with the advertising ID leaving the phone after consent was declined, though no typed text.

2

How many languages can SwiftKey use at once?

Five on Android and two on iPhone. Android supports more than 700 languages in total, and when two active languages share a layout the keyboard detects which one you are typing and adjusts predictions. Languages with different alphabets switch with a slide along the spacebar. Microsoft's own voice typing recognises English only.

3

Does SwiftKey have ads or in-app purchases?

There is nothing to pay for: premium themes went free in December 2016, and the App Store's in-app purchase list shows themes at $0.00. Google Play does mark the app Contains ads, and its Data safety card lists search history and location among data used for advertising. Microsoft's support pages do not say where ads appear.

4

What happened to SwiftKey accounts in 2026?

They were retired on May 31, 2026. Backup and sync now need a Microsoft account and store a readable word list plus the typing model in OneDrive's Apps > SwiftKey folder, where you can view, export or delete them. Data left in old SwiftKey accounts was set for deletion, while typing works without signing in.

5

Is SwiftKey more private than Gboard or the iPhone keyboard?

On Android the evidence says no: in a 2022 Trinity College Dublin study, Gboard let users switch telemetry off, and the open-source AnySoftKeyboard sent none. On iPhone the gap narrows, because Apple swaps in its own keyboard for password and phone-number fields, and Microsoft says the iOS extension does not transmit what you type.
