About Learna: Speak & Learn English

Learna turns English practice into a video call with an animated AI tutor: you answer out loud, and it hands your sentence back corrected. Codeway lists it among its brands, and both stores sell it under Deep Flow Software Services, a Dubai Digital Park company. Spanish, French and German sit beside English. The catch behind every "is it free" search: speaking practice stops after about five minutes, then a card-backed 7-day trial turns into weekly billing.

Learna Review: Talk-First English Practice, Lenient Scoring, Weekly Billing

Five minutes free, then a 7-day trial that needs a card

Play reviews from July 2026 describe a countdown timer that ends speaking practice after about five minutes, and a guest session limited to a short lesson plus two practice sentences. An August App Store review says Free Talk, the open conversation mode, appears to be time-limited each day without a subscription. Going further requires a 7-day trial tied to a payment method, and one July reviewer said the trial screen gave the charge date but not how often it repeats. Advertising sets the expectations: of the 150 most relevant English reviews on Google Play we read on 2 October 2026, 54 say an ad promised a free app, and 101 give one or two stars.

Video calls and Free Talk: helpful rewrites, uneven scoring

Lessons run as a call with an AI tutor, complete with camera, mute and hang-up buttons; a February 2026 ElevenLabs case study says Codeway moved the tutor voices to ElevenLabs text-to-speech. You pick a topic such as jobs, small talk, daily routine or family, and errors come back as a full corrected sentence rather than a red mark. Scoring errs both ways: an April 2026 Play reviewer mispronounced words on purpose and heard "Excellent", while a June reviewer said correct answers were marked wrong. A November 2025 review with 199 helpful votes missed any way to replay your own recording. The only outcome figures published are commercial: ElevenLabs reports 9% more trial conversions and 11% higher lifetime value, not learning gains.

$14.99 a week, Paddle billing and charges after cancelling

The US App Store lists ten Learna Pro purchases from $7.39 to $19.99. App Store reviews from September 2026 quote $14.99 a week after the trial, while Play reviewers earlier in the year cited $9.99 to $12; prices vary by region and change. Kept for a year, $14.99 a week comes to about $780. A yearly plan exists, since one reviewer was renewed at $33, yet an April Play reviewer was offered only the weekly option. On the US App Store, Speak's Annual Premium is $83.99 and ELSA Speak's yearly Premium is $99.99. Web purchases at ailearna.com go through Paddle, which handles refunds, and September reviews describe charges after cancelling, including one where paddle.net could not find the buyer's email.

Voice recordings go to OpenAI, Google, ElevenLabs and Soniox

The privacy policy, updated on 24 February 2026, names four AI providers that receive typed messages and recorded voice along with your name, level and native language: OpenAI, Google, ElevenLabs and Soniox. Recordings are stored by consent, and models train on your content only after an opt-in to model improvement, withdrawable in settings. The Play data safety form lists voice recordings as optional and claims no sharing with third parties, since Google's form does not count service providers as sharing; Apple's label says usage data may be used to track you. The policy and the web terms bar anyone under 16, although the stores rate the app 4+ and Everyone. Deletion requests go to learna@codeway.co and are answered within 30 days.

Pros

  • Spoken practice runs as a video call with an AI tutor
  • Mistakes return as a full corrected sentence, not just a red mark
  • Topic cards range from jobs and small talk to travel and sports
  • Model training on your recordings needs a separate opt-in you can withdraw
  • Web version at ailearna.com lists IELTS, TOEFL, Business and Travel English tracks

Cons

  • Speaking practice stops after about five minutes unless you start a trial
  • Weekly billing, quoted at $14.99 in September 2026 App Store reviews
  • Reviewers say deliberate mispronunciations can still be marked correct
  • Privacy policy bars under-16s, although the stores rate it 4+ and Everyone

Verdict

We score Learna 6.1. The video-call format makes speaking practice easy to start, and full-sentence corrections are useful, but scoring is uneven, the free tier lasts minutes, and billing defaults to weekly. Take it if you want daily English conversation reps and will pick the yearly plan deliberately. Skip it if you need a free course, where Duolingo fits better, detailed pronunciation feedback, where ELSA Speak is the specialist, or Japanese, Korean or Italian, which Speak teaches.

Core function7.0Video-call tutor with topic cards and full-sentence rewrites, but reviewers report scoring that misjudges both errors and correct answers.
Ease of use7.0Topic tiles and 10-minute lessons start fast, but onboarding leads straight to a trial screen asking for a card.
Monetisation4.0About five free minutes, a card-backed 7-day trial, weekly billing up to $14.99 and charge-after-cancel complaints.
Performance6.5At least 25 iOS releases since March 2026, yet reviewers report missed soft speech; the App Store lists it for iPhone only.
Privacy & permissions5.5Voice goes to four named AI providers; training is opt-in, but Apple's label lists usage data for tracking.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is Learna really free?

No. The download is free, but reviewers describe speaking practice stopping after about five minutes, and continuing requires a 7-day trial tied to a payment method. Unless you cancel before it ends, the subscription renews automatically, weekly in most September 2026 reports. Ads calling the app free are the most common complaint in its Google Play reviews.

2

Does Learna correct pronunciation accurately?

Not reliably. The tutor rewrites grammar mistakes into full sentences, but 2026 Play reviewers report deliberate mispronunciations marked as correct and correct answers marked wrong, and an earlier review missed any way to replay your own recording. For detailed pronunciation feedback, ELSA Speak is built around its Speech Analyzer and exam practice.

3

How much does Learna cost per week?

September 2026 App Store reviews cite $14.99 a week after the free trial, and the US App Store lists Learna Pro purchases from $7.39 to $19.99. A yearly plan exists but is not always shown on the paywall. Prices vary by region and can change, so check the amount before the trial starts.

4

How do I cancel Learna?

Cancel where you paid. On Android, open Google Play, then Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions; on iPhone, go to Settings, your name, Subscriptions. Web purchases from ailearna.com are billed by Paddle, so cancel through paddle.net. Deleting the app does not stop billing, so cancel before the 7-day trial ends.

5

Is Learna safe for kids?

Its privacy policy does not allow users under 16 and requires parental permission under 18, even though the App Store rates it 4+ and Google Play rates it Everyone. Typed messages and voice recordings go to OpenAI, Google, ElevenLabs and Soniox for processing. Duolingo, also rated 4+, keeps a free tier for younger learners.
