Grammarly vs QuillBot: Which AI Writing App to Use on a Phone
QuillBot for most people: more free tools, a keyboard on both iPhone and Android, and a Premium plan that costs $19.99 a month against Grammarly's $29
QuillBot is a paraphrasing and grammar app that runs as a standalone editor, as a keyboard on iPhone and Android, and on Android also as a floating assistant over other apps. The free tier gives two rewrite modes, a grammar check, a translator and an AI Detector. Eight more modes sit behind Premium, listed at $19.99 a month or $99.99 a year in the App Store.

The Paraphraser is the core of the app. Free accounts get Standard and Fluency. Premium adds Humanize, Formal, Academic, Simple, Creative, Expand, Shorten and a Custom mode that rewrites to your own instruction, according to the developer's Android and iOS help pages. The keyboard screenshots show the same list as a row of chips above selected text, so changing tone is one tap. The free side has other ceilings: Generative AI outputs, Humanize included, stop at 10 a day and need a login. The developer's web plan limits free paraphrasing to 125 words, and its iOS help lists unlimited words as a Premium perk without giving a free figure for the phone. The Translator and AI Detector are free in the app.
On Android the standout is the Floating AI Writing Assistant, a bubble over the app you are typing in. Developer help says it fixes grammar, paraphrases, detects AI text, translates and suggests ideas while you keep your own keyboard; the QuillBot Keyboard is optional and must be enabled in Android settings. The Play listing says the Accessibility permission is what lets it process text typed in other apps, which is a broad grant. The iOS help pages describe only the keyboard route: enable keyboard permissions in iOS settings, then switch to it from the globe key. Version 2.20.3 added swipe typing and AI-content detection from that keyboard. The bubble draws complaints: a 4-star Play review with 9 helpful votes says it covers submit and menu buttons, and a 1-star reviewer on version 4.12.0 uninstalled over it.
The App Store lists Premium at $19.99 monthly, $79.99 semi-annual and $99.99 annual, and Google Play lists in-app items from $19.95 to $99.95. The $8.33 a month on QuillBot's Premium page matches the yearly Play price divided by twelve and is billed as one payment, and several 2025-2026 App Store reviews say the yearly charge was unexpected. Store purchases follow store rules: the developer's help says Apple or Google handles refunds, cancelling is done in device settings, and store subscriptions cannot be paused, a 30, 60 or 90 day option offered only for web purchases. One account covers every platform, since a Premium bought in the app also works on the website and browser extensions after login. Prices are regional and can change.

The 7.1 rests on a wide toolkit that works where you type: eight extra paraphrase modes, a translator, an AI Detector and, on Android, a floating assistant. Take it if you rewrite short emails and messages and are happy with two free modes. Skip it if you need long free rewrites, mind a broad Accessibility permission on Android, or want a store subscription you can pause. The paywall and mixed accuracy reviews hold the score down.

Yes, with limits. The free tier includes the Standard and Fluency paraphrase modes, a basic grammar check, the Translator, the AI Detector and the keyboard. Generative AI, Humanize included, is capped at 10 outputs a day and needs a login. Premium adds eight or more modes and unlimited paraphrasing. The Play page shows an in-app purchases badge and no ads badge.
On iPhone, install the app, log in, enable keyboard permissions in iOS settings, then pick QuillBot from the globe key menu, which the store screenshots show. On Android, enable the QuillBot Keyboard in Android settings, or skip it and use the floating assistant, which works with the keyboard you already have.
In the US App Store it is $19.99 monthly, $79.99 semi-annual or $99.99 annual, and Google Play lists $19.95 to $99.95. The Premium page advertises $8.33 a month on the annual plan, billed as one yearly payment. Prices are regional, so check the amount shown at checkout before confirming.
For a store subscription, cancel in device settings: Settings, your name, Subscriptions, QuillBot on iPhone, or Play Store, Menu, Subscriptions on Android. Refunds go through Apple or Google. The developer says account deletion is a request through its webform, not a button on the website, and Google Play lets you ask for your data to be deleted.
Grammarly's iOS listing names voice dictation with automatic cleanup and suggestions in 20+ languages, so it leans toward grammar and tone. Wordtune's listing centers on Rewrite with tone and length controls. ChatGPT covers open-ended drafting in a chat window. QuillBot's edge is the paraphrase-mode list, from Standard to Custom.
