About Text Me - Phone Call + Texting

Text Me gives you a US or Canadian phone number that texts and calls over Wi-Fi or mobile data, with no SIM card or carrier plan behind it. Texting most US and Canadian numbers is free; calling ordinary US and Canadian numbers costs credits unless you pay for Premium. The catch is the number itself: a free line must place an outbound call or text every 15 days, and once reassigned it cannot be recovered.

Text Me Review: A Real Second Number, Rented on a 15-Day Clock

The Free Number and the 15-Day Use-It-or-Lose-It Rule

The help center says sign-ups from the US, Canada or the UK are assigned a free number. Keeping it takes an outbound call or SMS within the first 7 days, then at least once every 15 days; a warning arrives first, but a reassigned number cannot be restored, and the terms let the company reclaim any assigned number at any time. Google Voice, by comparison, may reclaim a number only after 3 months without calls or texts. A Premium subscription or a paid number plan stops the clock. Recent Google Play reviews add that the picker sometimes offered only trials or paid plans.

Credits, the $7.99 Premium Tier and 31-Day Number Plans

Calls between TextMe users and all incoming calls are free; calling regular phone numbers draws on credits, as on textPlus, and the Rate Finder under the Me tab shows the cost before you dial. Free credits expire 180 days after they are granted, while purchased credits last until the account is closed or suspended. The US App Store lists Premium Features at $7.99, a number purchase at $4.99 or $5.99, and 100 TextMe Credits at $1.99; check the current price in the app, as it varies by region. Premium renews weekly or monthly, removes ads and keeps your number without regular use, but includes no credits. A one-time Phone Number plan runs 31 days or a year instead.

Verification Codes and the 24-Hour Secure Your Number Window

Receiving sign-in codes from other services is restricted. The help center says verification texts are supported only from a limited set of companies, and it keeps no list of them. On a free number, a supported code arrives behind a Secure your number prompt, and the number must be purchased within 24 hours or the message expires. Some numbers also require ID verification: a photo of the account holder holding an ID document and a handwritten note with the word TextMe, the date and the number's last four digits. TextNow is similar, supporting most codes only with its own SIM or the paid Lock In Number or Ad-Free+ subscriptions.

911 Routing and What the Privacy Labels Disclose

In the US, dialing 911 in the app opens the phone's native dialer and calls over the SIM card, even without a carrier plan. On a device with no SIM, turning the Native Dialer setting off routes 911 through the app, and users are asked to save an emergency address first, since dispatchers otherwise get no location. The terms call the service no substitute for a regular phone line. The App Store privacy label lists purchases, identifiers and usage data as used to track you across other companies' apps, and the Google Play Data safety form says device IDs are shared for advertising. Data is encrypted in transit, and Delete my data in the Privacy Center must be requested before the account is canceled.

Pros

  • Free numbers for US, Canadian and UK sign-ups, per the help center
  • Several numbers on one account, including UK, French and Australian lines
  • Rate Finder shows the credit cost of a call before you dial
  • Purchased credits never expire unless the account is closed or suspended
  • US 911 calls go through the SIM by default, even without a plan

Cons

  • Free numbers can be reclaimed after 15 days without an outbound call or text
  • Verification codes on a free number require buying the number within 24 hours
  • Full-screen video ads between conversations are a leading complaint on Google Play
  • Calls to regular US numbers cost credits unless you pay for Premium

Verdict

The 5.9 reflects a working number and international lines few rivals offer, offset by ads, credit charges and paywalled verification codes. Take it for a disposable US or Canadian line for classified listings, or a UK or French number for travel, if you will text from it every two weeks. Skip it if the number will anchor bank or social logins, or if you rely on inbound calls: reviews keep reporting logouts and missed calls.

Core function7.0A working US, Canadian or UK number with free US texting, but outbound calls need credits or Premium.
Ease of use6.5Five clear tabs and a Rate Finder, undercut by plan-versus-subscription confusion and ads crowding the inbox.
Monetisation4.5Full-screen ads, a $7.99 Premium tier, and verification codes held until the number is bought within 24 hours.
Performance5.5Recurring Google Play reviews report forced logouts, missed incoming calls and texts marked sent that never arrive.
Privacy & permissions5.0Purchases, identifiers and usage data tracked across apps; device IDs shared for advertising; deletion request available.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is Text Me really free?

Partly. Texting most US and Canadian numbers and calling other TextMe users is free, and the help center says US, Canadian and UK sign-ups get a free number. Calling ordinary numbers uses credits, the number needs an outbound call or text every 15 days, and recent Google Play reviews say the picker often showed only trials or paid plans.

2

Can I have more than one number on Text Me?

Yes. One account can hold several numbers, with numbers offered in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, France, Poland and other countries; the app's screenshots show a Get a 5th phone number button. Extra numbers are sold by subscription, and deleting a number is permanent and wipes any purchases made on it.

3

How much does Text Me Premium cost?

The US App Store lists Premium Features at $7.99, with weekly and monthly auto-renewing plans; check the current price in the app, as it varies by region. Premium removes ads, keeps your number without regular use, and adds unlimited US and Canada calls and texts to most numbers, call forwarding and conversation export. International-call credits are not included.

4

What happens to my Text Me number if I cancel Premium?

It can expire. The help center says a number on a plan or subscription only expires once the plan lapses or the subscription is cancelled, and a reassigned number cannot be recovered. Deleting your account does not stop an auto-renewing subscription; cancel it in Google Play or the App Store, which also handle refund requests.

5

Is Text Me better than Google Voice or TextNow?

For a number you rarely use, Google Voice is easier to keep: it reclaims numbers after 3 months of inactivity versus 15 days here, though new users must pass government ID verification. TextNow expires an unused new number within 24 hours, and textPlus runs a similar ads-and-credits model. Text Me's edge is numbers in more than a dozen countries.
