Best Free Social Apps for Adults, Ranked
Adults use social apps for different things than teenagers do: running a club, finding people who share an interest, selling a sofa, keeping up with f
Threads is Meta's text-first social app, built on Instagram accounts and aimed at the audience that left X. Posts are short, replies stack into conversations, and polls, communities and direct messages have been added since launch. Google Play records more than 500 million installs. The thing that changed most recently is commercial: advertising completed its global rollout in January 2026.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-09-07. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
The app launched without advertising and spent a year testing it. Meta began a pilot in the United States and Japan in January 2025, extended it to more than thirty countries that April, and on 21 January 2026 opened the placement to advertisers worldwide, adding carousel and catalogue formats alongside image and video. Ads are delivered through the same targeting system that runs Facebook and Instagram campaigns. Worth noting for anyone reading store listings: the Google Play page still carries no Contains ads badge, so the listing is behind what the app now shows.
Three features separate it from a plain timeline. Communities gather posts around a subject with a member count and an online count — Book Threads shows 266,000 members in the store screenshots — and joining one filters the feed. Polls run inside a post with a visible countdown and vote tally. Search opens on a Trending now panel where each topic is summarised by AI rather than shown as a raw list of posts. Direct messages arrived later and now sit alongside the feed, so a conversation can move private without leaving the app.
An account here is an Instagram account: the profile is created from that login, and the two sit in the same Accounts Center, where separate help pages now cover deactivating or deleting a Threads profile without touching Instagram. The data footprint matches the family: Google Play lists 14 collected categories, with personal information and device identifiers shared with third parties. The rating gap is the other thing to weigh — 4.6 on the App Store against 4.0 from 2.6 million Google Play reviews, drawn from an install base that has passed 500 million on Android alone. That is a large, recent audience judging the same app very differently on each platform.

If you already have an Instagram account, this is the least effortful way back into a text feed, and communities and polls have made it more than a mirror of X. Judge it on what changed in 2026: advertising is now everywhere in it, and the data collection is Meta's standard fourteen categories. Anyone who left X specifically to escape an ad-funded timeline should know this one now has one.

Yes. Posting, replying, communities and messages cost nothing, and no subscription unlocks features. Advertising pays for it: after a year of testing, Meta completed the global rollout of Threads ads on 21 January 2026, so sponsored posts now appear in feeds everywhere.
Subject-based groups you join from inside the app, each showing a member count and how many people are currently online. Posts made in a community appear to its members and shape what your main feed recommends. They are the closest thing here to the hashtag columns people used on older text platforms.
Nothing required. The app is free, and the store listing shows in-app purchases only because it shares the Instagram framework, where Meta Verified is sold as a badge and support subscription. Ordinary use — posting, following, messaging, polls — involves no payment at all.
Yes. Meta's help centre now carries separate pages for deactivating and for deleting a Threads profile, and both are handled in the Accounts Center. Deactivating hides your posts until you return; deleting removes the Threads profile while the Instagram account it was built from stays intact.
X remains the incumbent for live commentary and has the deeper archive of accounts. Bluesky covers the same text-post format with a smaller audience and different moderation. The practical difference here is the audience: this one inherits Instagram's, which is why it filled up so quickly.
