About Reddit

Reddit is a network of communities rather than a feed of people: subreddits for cat photos, makeup, cosplay or a specific city, each with its own moderators and rules, and comments ranked by votes rather than by recency. That structure is why searching a question plus the word reddit has become a habit. The app is free with advertising, and Premium costs $6.99 a month.

Reddit Review: Communities First, Feed Second

Votes Decide What You Read

Every post and comment carries an up and down arrow, and the tally reorders the page rather than decorating it — a post at 69,000 upvotes sits above one at 327, and a useful reply climbs over an early one. That is the mechanism people are actually using when they add the word reddit to a Google search: it surfaces the answer other readers found correct, in a thread where someone has usually argued the opposite underneath. Comments nest, so a disagreement is readable as a branch rather than a stream.

Communities With Their Own Rules

A subreddit is a small forum with a name, moderators and a posted set of rules, from r/CatLoaf to a city's own page. Joining changes the home feed, and the Communities tab collects the ones you follow. The app adds a chat tab, an inbox for replies and an avatar builder with outfits and animal styles. What it does not do is show you strangers' profiles the way a social network does — identity here is a username, and most people keep it separate from their real name.

Premium at $6.99, and Eight Shared Data Types

Advertising pays for the free version: the Play listing carries a Contains ads badge, and sponsored posts sit inside the feed. Premium removes them at $6.99 a month or $59.99 a year, and Reddit Gold is sold in $1.99 to $5.99 packs for rewarding posts, with collectible avatars at $4.99 and $9.99. The data card is the concerning part — Google Play lists eleven collected categories and eight shared with third parties, including financial information, and Apple notes cross-app tracking. That combination — advertising, a subscription to remove it, and data sold onward — is now standard for social apps, but the shared-category count here is at the high end.

Pros

  • Voting surfaces the answer readers found most useful
  • Communities have their own moderators and rules
  • Nested comments keep long disagreements readable in order
  • Usernames keep identity separate from real life
  • Rated 4.8 on the App Store across 3.5 million ratings

Cons

  • Eight data categories shared with third parties
  • Sponsored posts appear inside the feed
  • Premium costs $6.99 a month to remove advertising
  • Mature content across many communities by default

Verdict

The most useful social app for finding out what people actually think about something — voting and nested comments do work that a chronological feed cannot, and communities keep subjects apart. Two things to weigh: the data card lists eight categories shared with third parties, which is high even for a free app, and much of the content is adult by default. Reading without an account is a reasonable middle position.

Core function8.5Voting, nesting and community structure deliver answers other social apps cannot.
Ease of use7.5Simple to read, harder to navigate: rules, flairs and moderation vary by community.
Monetisation7.0Free with ads, $6.99 to remove them, plus Gold packs and collectible avatars.
Performance7.0A heavy install, and image-dense feeds load slowly on a weak connection.
Privacy & permissions4.5Eleven categories collected, eight shared onward including financial information.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is Reddit free?

Yes, funded by advertising — the Play listing carries a Contains ads badge and sponsored posts appear between ordinary ones. Premium at $6.99 a month or $59.99 a year removes them. Reddit Gold packs, from $1.99 to $5.99, exist for rewarding other people's posts rather than unlocking features.

2

What is a subreddit?

A community with its own name, moderators and rules — r/Cosplay, r/CatLoaf, a city, a game, a profession. Joining one changes what your home feed shows. Each has its own posting conventions, and reading the sidebar rules before posting saves most new users an argument.

3

What does Reddit Premium include?

An ad-free feed, at $6.99 a month or $59.99 a year, plus a monthly allowance of Gold to award other people's posts. It changes nothing about what you can read or post, which makes it a donation with advertising removal attached rather than a feature tier.

4

Do you need an account to read?

No — most of the site can be read without signing in, and search works from a browser. An account is needed to vote, comment, post and join communities, and it is what shapes the home feed. Usernames are not tied to a real name, which is the norm here rather than an exception.

5

What are the alternatives?

Discord covers community conversation in real time rather than in threads. X carries faster commentary with far less structure. For a searchable archive of people answering each other's questions, this remains the only real option at this scale.
