TikTok Accepts a Two-Hour Daily Limit for Teens in a $100M Deal
TikTok has agreed to hard limits on how long teenagers can use it, as part of a settlement with the state of Alabama announced on September 25. The st
TikTok is a vertical video feed that decides what you watch: the For You page learns from watch time rather than from the accounts you follow. The app is also a shop and a live-streaming platform, where Coins bought from $0.29 turn into gifts, and every teen account starts with a 60-minute daily limit. The iPhone build now weighs a full gigabyte.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-09-07. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
Every account registered to someone under 18 starts with a 60-minute daily limit; when it runs out, a passcode prompt makes continuing a deliberate act rather than a swipe. Accounts for 13- to 15-year-olds are private by default, so a stranger cannot see the videos without being accepted. Family Pairing adds the parental layer: a dashboard with time spent, how many times the app was opened and a day-versus-night split, a schedule that mutes notifications, blocked hours for school or bedtime, and a list of who the teen follows, who follows back and who has been blocked.
Spending runs through Coins, bought in the app from $0.29 for 20 up to $19.99 for 1,321, and turned into gifts for live streamers. Earning runs the other way and the bar is public: the Creator Rewards Program takes creators aged 18 and over with at least 10,000 followers and 100,000 video views in the previous 30 days, and it pays only on original videos longer than one minute that clear 1,000 views on the For You feed. Duets, stitches and sponsored posts are excluded. Those are US listings; prices differ by region and change without notice.
The US privacy policy names TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC as the operator. Google Play lists eleven categories of collected data, and the App Store label declares tracking across other companies' apps and websites. The controls live under Settings and privacy, on the Ads page: activity that advertising partners share about you off the app can be cleared once every 24 hours, ad topics can be adjusted under How your ads are personalized, and a single advertiser can be muted for 28 days. A full personalized-ads switch is offered only in the EEA and Switzerland; elsewhere, ads based on what you do inside the app stay on. On an iPhone running iOS 14.5 or later, the system privacy setting can still stop cross-app tracking.

Install it for the feed — nothing else fills a spare ten minutes as efficiently, and the editing tools cost nothing. Think twice if the data trail matters: Google Play lists eleven collected categories, the App Store label admits tracking across other apps, and only off-app ad data can be cleared, not in-app targeting. Parents get real controls here, but they are worth setting up on day one rather than later.

Watching and posting cost nothing, and there is no subscription to unlock the feed. The Google Play listing carries a Contains ads badge, so advertising sits between videos, and the only money the app asks for is Coins, which are optional and used for gifts to live streamers.
It is the default tab, and it is built from behaviour rather than subscriptions: how long you watch, what you rewatch, what you skip. A Following tab beside it shows only accounts you chose, and a LIVE tab collects streams. Because the feed is behavioural, a few deliberate skips change what arrives next.
The in-app ladder starts at $0.29 for 20 Coins and runs through $0.99 for 65, $4.99 for 330 and $9.99 for 660, up to $19.99 for 1,321. Coins buy gifts during live streams, not features: nothing in the feed is locked behind them. Prices are US listings and vary by country.
The option sits in Settings under Account, as Deactivate or delete account. Deactivation is the reversible half: the profile disappears from view and comes back when you log in again. Deletion is the permanent one and follows the company's privacy policy for how the data behind it is handled.
Instagram Reels is the closest match on the same phone and shares the vertical format, while YouTube Shorts sits inside a library you may already use for longer video. Neither has the same recommendation depth, and both belong to companies whose data practices are worth the same scrutiny.
