About The Weather Network

The Weather Network is a Canadian weather app from Pelmorex Corp. of Oakville, Ontario, and it does work for US locations: Fahrenheit units, current-location forecasts resolved to about 0.6 miles, and National Weather Service alerts. Its standout is a Precipitation Page that charts rain in 10-minute steps. The catch for Americans: road maps, color-coded warnings and much of the news are built for Canada, and the free version leans hard on ads.

The Weather Network Review: Usable in the US, Built for Canada First

What US users get: °F, NWS alerts and Canada-only extras

Every forecast tool is free: hourly, 7-day and 14-day outlooks, radar and severe weather alerts. For US use, switch to Fahrenheit under Settings. With current location on, forecasts are calculated for your coordinates down to about 1 km (0.6 miles), and the App Store screenshots show a National Weather Service Winter Weather Advisory for Milwaukee County. The Canadian wiring shows elsewhere. The red, orange and yellow alert colors apply only to Environment and Climate Change Canada warnings, and the highway conditions map covers Canada only. When we opened the website's New York forecast page on October 1, 2026, its news strip led with Canadian stories.

Precipitation Page: 10-minute rain bars for the next 3 hours

The Precipitation Page opens when rain or snow is close and splits into a Next 3 hours tab and a Next 24 hours tab. The 3-hour view stacks bars in 10-minute steps, green for rain, blue for snow and pink for ice, and prints a plain line such as "Rain stops at 2:40PM" above the graph. The full map opens on radar whenever precipitation is due within 3 hours, and its Precipitation layer runs up to 5 days ahead. Two newer tools earn their space: a Fire & Smoke layer that tracks wildfire smoke drift and a Monthly Calendar comparing each day with historical averages. AccuWeather's MinuteCast, by its App Store listing, looks four hours ahead; the 10-minute graph here stops at three.

Ad Free at $6.99 a year: cheaper than rivals, with caveats

In the US App Store, the Ad Free Subscription costs $1.99 a month or $6.99 a year; check the current price in the app, as it varies by region. Pelmorex reset its plans in November 2025, adding a 7-day free trial for new yearly subscribers and keeping old prices only until each subscription ran out. One App Store reviewer reported a June 2026 renewal notice raising the yearly plan from $2.99 to $6.99. Even so, the yearly plan undercuts The Weather Channel's Ad Free at $9.99, WeatherBug's at $10.99 and AccuWeather Premium+ at $29.99. The limits: it covers only the app on the store account that bought it, never the website, and Play reviewers from May to August 2026 describe repeatedly tapping Restore Purchases to hide ads again.

Privacy label vs. policy: location, ad networks and Canadian servers

Apple's privacy label says location, identifiers and usage data may be used to track you across other companies' apps. Google Play's Data safety form says nothing is shared with third parties, yet the privacy policy, last reviewed April 14, 2025, names Google Ad Manager, Google DV 360 and The Trade Desk among networks that receive information to serve ads. The same policy says Pelmorex sells aggregated insights, buys precise location data from outside suppliers, captures app sessions with Microsoft Clarity and stores user data in cloud servers within Canada. It has no section on US state privacy rights, and the terms of use put disputes under Ontario law. CBC News reported in 2017 that Pelmorex bought the mobile ad firm Addictive Mobility.

Pros

  • Ad Free costs $6.99 a year, below The Weather Channel's $9.99
  • Precipitation Page charts rain, snow and ice in 10-minute steps
  • Shows National Weather Service alerts for US locations
  • Current-location forecasts are calculated down to about 0.6 miles
  • Fire & Smoke map layer shows where wildfire smoke is drifting
  • Monthly Calendar compares each day with its historical averages

Cons

  • Free-tier ads can open Amazon when a scroll starts on them
  • The September 2026 Android 8.0 update broke widgets and the status-bar temperature
  • Alert colors and the highway conditions map cover Canada only
  • Policy allows selling aggregated insights and has no US state privacy section

Verdict

We scored it 6.3. The 10-minute Precipitation Page, free 14-day forecasts, NWS alerts and the cheapest yearly ad-free plan among its rivals earn the score; aggressive free-tier ads, a rough Android 8.0 rollout in September 2026 and an ad-driven privacy policy pull it down. Take it if you split time between the US and Canada or want ad-free weather for $6.99 a year. Skip it if you want US road maps and US-focused news, where The Weather Channel or AccuWeather fit better.

Core function7.510-minute precipitation bars, 14-day outlooks and NWS alerts work in the US; road maps and alert colors don't.
Ease of use6.0Fahrenheit is one setting away, but free-tier ads can hijack a scroll and open Amazon.
Monetisation6.5$6.99 a year undercuts rivals, but some renewals more than doubled and paying users report ads returning.
Performance5.5The September 2026 Android 8.0 rollout broke widgets and status-bar temperatures; Pelmorex says fixes followed.
Privacy & permissions4.5Apple's label lists tracking; the policy sells aggregated insights, buys location data and keeps data in Canada.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is The Weather Network app free to use in the US?

Yes. Forecasts, radar, the Precipitation Page and severe weather alerts, including National Weather Service warnings, are free with ads, and Fahrenheit is a setting. What Americans miss is the Canadian layer: color-coded alerts follow Environment and Climate Change Canada, and the highway conditions map stops at the border.

2

How far ahead does The Weather Network show when rain will stop?

About three hours. The Precipitation Page's Next 3 hours tab draws rain, snow and ice in 10-minute bars and states when precipitation should start or stop, while a Next 24 hours tab gives the longer view. The page appears when precipitation is expected soon, and the map's Precipitation layer extends up to 5 days.

3

How much is The Weather Network ad-free subscription?

$1.99 a month or $6.99 a year in the US App Store, with a 7-day free trial on the yearly plan for new subscribers. It removes ads in the app only; the website keeps them, and an iPhone purchase does not carry over to Android. Check the current price in the app; it varies by region.

4

How do I delete my Weather Network account?

On the website: log in, click the profile icon and choose Delete Account. Under the privacy policy, photos you uploaded are deleted with the account. An Ad Free plan is billed separately, so cancel it in App Store or Google Play subscriptions; refunds go through Apple or Google, not Pelmorex.

5

Is The Weather Network the same as The Weather Channel?

No. The Weather Network belongs to Pelmorex Corp. of Oakville, Ontario, which also runs MétéoMédia and the system behind Canada's Alert Ready emergency alerts. The Weather Channel app comes from a separate company, The Weather Company, LLC. For US-first coverage, The Weather Channel or AccuWeather fit better; Pelmorex wins on ad-free price.
