GTA 6 Online Coming in 2027, Twitch CEO Says After Rockstar Talks

Grand Theft Auto VI's multiplayer will arrive in 2027, a year after the game itself, according to Twitch CEO Dan Clancy. Speaking in an interview on September 17 during Tokyo Game Show, Clancy said he had spent "a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans" and expects "an even bigger" surge in viewing "next year when they launch multiplayer." Rockstar has confirmed nothing: GTA VI launches November 19 as a single-player game, and the company has never announced a new GTA Online.

What was announced

The quote comes from an interview published September 17, in which Clancy discussed how GTA VI will move Twitch's audience. "We spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans, and also helping them think about how they can engage our creators," he said. "You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer."

That is the first time anyone with direct access to Rockstar has put a year on GTA VI's online mode. It is not an announcement. Clancy runs a streaming platform, not Rockstar, and neither Rockstar nor Take-Two had commented on the remark by the end of September 17. The only official position remains the one on Rockstar's GTA VI page and the store listings since pre-orders opened on June 25: Grand Theft Auto VI is a "single-player experience" at launch.

In the same interview Clancy offered a note of caution to the rest of the industry: avoid the "attention vortex" of GTA VI — the weeks around November 19 in which every other game will struggle to be watched.

What it means for players

For anyone buying the game on November 19, nothing changes: the story mode is what ships, and Rockstar has said nothing about an online component in the box. Take-Two, Rockstar's parent, has separately said the current GTA Online "will stay in market" after GTA VI launches, so the existing game does not shut down.

What Clancy's remark does is narrow the wait. If multiplayer lands in 2027, the gap between the single-player launch and online play is up to a year — far longer than the fifteen days that separated GTA V from GTA Online in 2013, but the first bound of any kind on a mode Rockstar has never named or dated. Whether it comes free with the game, as a separate download or as a separate purchase is still unknown.

What happens next

Rockstar's next scheduled moment is November 19 and the album that launches alongside it. Any multiplayer detail before then would be a surprise; Take-Two's quarterly results calls, the next in November, are where the company has previously discussed GTA Online's future. Until Rockstar itself uses the word, "2027" is a Twitch executive's expectation, not a date.
