Best Drawing and Design Apps on Mobile, Ranked
Sketchbook is the best drawing app on a phone: its brushes, perspective guides and symmetry are free, it shows no ads, and the only upgrade is a $2.99
Canva is a template-first design editor for social posts, short video, slides and emails, and it is free to use: 1.6 million templates, 4.7 million stock assets and 5 GB of storage cost nothing, with no ads. The catch sits inside the library — premium elements carry a criss-cross watermark until bought or unlocked by Pro. The free AI allowance is 20 uses a month, and offline editing works on Android but not iPhone.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-10-01. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
The Free plan is wide rather than shallow: 1.6 million templates across more than 1,000 design types, 4.7 million photos, videos, graphics and audio files, 5 GB of cloud storage and one Brand Kit limited to three colors. The line is drawn element by element: anything marked premium sits on the canvas under a criss-cross watermark until you pay for it or upgrade, and a single purchase licenses that element for one design only — reuse it elsewhere and you pay again. Pro opens 3.6 million templates and 141 million premium assets with 100 GB of storage, for one person per account. By count, the free stock library is roughly 3% of what Pro unlocks, which is why a critical Google Play review saying most of the app sits behind the paywall has more than 2,000 helpful votes.
Magic Layers is the tool that best shows where the app is heading. It takes a flat image, including one generated inside the app, and separates people, objects and background into movable layers while turning baked-in lettering back into editable text. It entered public beta on March 11, 2026, in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, and accepts single-page PNG or JPG files. Every run draws from a pooled monthly AI allowance: up to 20 uses on Free, up to 200 Premium uses on Pro, and Ultra tools such as video-clip generation capped at 20 a month on Pro and absent from Free. A Pro trial runs on the Free allowance, not the paid one. A recurring complaint in recent Google Play reviews is the meter itself: usage appears as a percentage, and failed generations still consume it.
Offline editing works in the Android app and in desktop and mobile browsers, but not in the iPhone or iPad apps. Even on Android it is narrow: designs must be marked for offline use while connected, edits hold for up to 14 days, image uploads must stay under 50 MB, and exporting, templates, AI tools and video editing all wait for a connection. Google Play's data safety section declares no sharing with third parties, while Apple's privacy label lists identifiers that may be used to track you across other companies' apps and websites. Free and Pro accounts get a Privacy controls toggle deciding whether uploaded content can improve the AI features; Business and Enterprise content is excluded and cannot be opted in. Account data is stored in the United States.

The 7.6 rests on a free tier that is genuinely usable — 1.6 million templates, no ads, 5 GB of storage — weighed against metering that tightens the moment you reach for premium elements or AI. Take it for social posts, slides and emails built from templates, where the free library and the Android offline mode cover most needs. Skip it if you draw from scratch, where Procreate Pocket's one-time $5.99 fits better; if you need to work offline on an iPhone; or if you edit long videos that must export reliably.

Yes. The Free plan costs $0 and shows no ads, and it includes 1.6 million templates, 4.7 million stock assets, 5 GB of storage and up to 20 AI uses a month. What it leaves out is premium content: those elements stay watermarked until you buy a single-design license for each one or move to Pro.
Yes, with Magic Layers, a Premium AI tool in public beta since March 2026 in the US, UK, Canada and Australia. It separates people, objects and backgrounds and turns lettering baked into the picture back into editable text. It accepts single-page PNG or JPG files, and each run draws from your monthly AI allowance — up to 20 uses on Free.
On the web in the US, Pro is listed at $144 a year for one person, and App Store monthly Pro tiers run from $14.99 to $18; prices vary by region, so check the current price in the app. It pays off if you keep hitting watermarked elements or the 20-use AI cap: Pro opens 3.6 million templates, 100 GB of storage and up to 200 Premium AI uses a month.
Partly, and only in the Android app and in browsers — the iPhone and iPad apps have no offline mode. Existing designs must be marked for offline use while you are connected; after that you can edit text, layouts and images under 50 MB for up to 14 days. New designs, exports, templates, AI tools and video editing all need a connection.
For drawing from scratch, Procreate Pocket costs $5.99 once on iPhone, with no subscription and no generative AI. Adobe Express is the closest template-based rival at $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year on the App Store. Picsart is the photo-editing option, but its Android app shows ads and its iOS app sells a $5.99 Ad Remover. Prices are US and vary by region.
