About PENUP – Drawing-sharing SNS

PENUP is Samsung's free drawing app and art feed, and it installs on non-Samsung Android phones too. Without an S Pen you still get coloring pages, Live Drawing video lessons, monthly challenges and the community, but pressure sensitivity adjustment and Auto fix lines and shapes need the stylus. There are no ads or in-app purchases. The catch: sign-up runs through a Samsung account, and posting grants Samsung a license that survives deletion.

PENUP Review: Free and Ad-Free, but Built for the S Pen and Samsung Accounts

Without an S Pen or a Galaxy phone: what still works

The Google Play listing installs on non-Samsung Android phones, and an October 2023 update opened Samsung account sign-up on them; its replies to September 2026 reviews still steer every new user to that account. Other replies say pressure sensitivity adjustment and Auto fix lines and shapes require an S Pen device, and the Quick tools menu added in November 2025 opens only from the S Pen button. Off Samsung hardware, results vary: an August 2026 review describes lag on Blackview and Doogee phones, and a September one a launch crash on a Huawei Y6II. The Windows build in the Microsoft Store carries Samsung's own warning that it is optimized for Galaxy Book laptops.

Live Drawing, 15 layers and the August 2026 Selection mode change

Live Drawing plays another artist's recorded strokes as a video so you can trace over them; members can't publish their own. A canvas holds up to 15 layers and goes as large as 4096 px on devices that can handle it. Brushes arrive as free downloads: 53 in May 2026 and 12 more in September, plus Dual brush, which merges two tips into one stroke. Drawing guides add a 2D grid, perspective with up to three vanishing points, and symmetry. The August 2026 update moved Transform out of Selection mode and gave layers Curves, Hue/saturation and Halftone; English, Spanish and Korean reviews from August and September call the new lasso routine slower.

What posting gives Samsung: a license that outlives deletion

The U.S. edition of the PENUP terms says a post on the default public setting lets everyone access, use, download and make derivative works of it. You also grant Samsung a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, transferable and sub-licensable license to anything you post, and the terms state it does not end when you delete the artwork or your account; removed files may persist in backups. Titles and hashtags can show up in web search. The Remix button appears only on works whose owner left Allow remixes on. For reposted work, the terms give an email route, penup.voc@samsung.com, and a removal target of 72 hours. The Play safety form lists optional approximate location, email and user IDs, and states that data isn't transferred over a secure connection.

Reports, blocks and Kid's Mode: how moderation works

Samsung's U.S. help page lists what gets removed: nudity, images of injured people or animals, intellectual property violations, impersonation, and promotion of drugs, weapons, alcohol or smoking. Reporting runs through the three-dot menu on an artwork or comment, after which the PENUP team decides on removal. Blocking a user hides all of their artwork and comments. The same page sets the minimum age at 13, and children on a child Samsung account get Kid's Mode, which keeps drawing and coloring but strips out the social features. Reviews from September 2026 describe repeated harassment reports going unanswered and AI images and art theft left up. Samsung's replies ask users to retry the next day if a report wasn't processed.

Pros

  • No ads and no in-app purchases; every brush download is free
  • Live Drawing lets you trace another artist's recorded strokes step by step
  • Two themed 15-day challenges a month, plus a monthly Hall of Fame
  • Export drafts saves .penup files that keep layers for a new device
  • Drawing guides cover a 2D grid, three-point perspective and symmetry
  • Allow remixes toggle decides whether others can build on your post

Cons

  • Pressure sensitivity and Auto fix lines and shapes require an S Pen device
  • Posting grants Samsung a sub-licensable license that survives deleting your account
  • September 2026 reviews say harassment and art-theft reports go unanswered
  • Sign-up runs through a Samsung account, and the layer stack stops at 15

Verdict

We scored it 7.6 for a free, ad-free mix of coloring, Live Drawing lessons and challenges, held back by stylus-only tools, uneven moderation and a license that outlives deletion. Take it if you own a Galaxy device with an S Pen and want guided practice with an audience. Look elsewhere if you draw on a non-Samsung phone, need more than 15 layers, or would rather not license your posts to Samsung.

Core function8.0Live Drawing, coloring, challenges, 4096 px canvases and 53 new brushes in May 2026 alone, but only 15 layers per drawing.
Ease of use7.0Clear tabs and guides, yet the August 2026 Selection mode change drew complaints and drafts stay on one device unless exported.
Monetisation9.5No ads, no in-app purchases and free brush downloads; the terms still reserve the right to add both later.
Performance6.5Built around the S Pen on Galaxy devices; reviews report lag on Blackview and Doogee phones and a crash on a Huawei.
Privacy & permissions6.0Only two optional permissions, but Play's form says data travels unencrypted and the post license outlives deletion.

Frequently asked questions

1

Does PENUP work on non-Samsung phones?

Yes. It installs from Google Play on other Android phones running Android 9 or later, and a Samsung account can be created on them. It stays free and ad-free, but without an S Pen you lose pressure sensitivity adjustment, Auto fix lines and shapes and the Quick tools menu, and 2026 reviews report lag or crashes on some non-Samsung models.

2

How does Live Drawing in PENUP work?

Live Drawing plays a recorded drawing as a video, and you trace each stroke over it. Members can't publish Live Drawings, but Samsung's help page says you can record a timelapse of your own artwork to the Gallery. Unfinished Live Drawing work exports with your other drafts as a .penup file.

3

Does PENUP have ads or in-app purchases?

No. Google Play shows neither the Contains ads nor the In-app purchases badge, and Samsung's replies to reviews describe it as a free app with no ads. Brushes download at no cost. The terms do reserve Samsung's right to add paid features or advertising later.

4

What happens to my PENUP drafts if I change phones?

Drafts live only on the device until you post them, so they don't sync through your account. Since May 2026, Export drafts saves them as .penup files that keep layers, and Import drafts restores them on the new phone. Settings also offers a personal data download that includes your uploaded artwork.

5

Is PENUP better than ibis Paint X or Sketchbook?

For lessons and a community, yes; for tools, no. ibis Paint X carries the Contains ads badge on Google Play and lists 27 layer blending modes, while Sketchbook shows no ads badge and its Play safety form reports no data collected. Samsung's app adds Live Drawing and challenges instead. It isn't on iPhone, where Procreate Pocket is a one-time purchase.
